1. Specific lipoproteins binding alpha-tocopherol but not its known metabolites have been isolated and identified from cytosol of rat intestinal mucosa and from serum. 2. A timestudy of the appearance of the orally administered alpha-[(3)H]tocopherol with these lipoproteins indicates that very-low-density lipoprotein of serum acts as a carrier of the vitamin. 3. The involvement of the mucosal lipoprotein in the absorption of the vitamin from the intestine has been inferred from observations on the amounts of alpha-tocopherol in serum of orotic acid-fed rats where release of lipoproteins from the liver to serum is completely inhibited. A considerable decrease in the association of alpha-tocopherol with serum very-low-density lipoprotein under this condition is interpreted to mean that serum lipoproteins are limiting factors for the transport of the vitamin across the intestine and that this is possibly effected by exchange of alpha-tocopherol between serum very-low-density lipoprotein and mucosal lipoprotein.

The formation and the properties of luminescent complexes of europium and terbium with a variety of organic ligands have been investigated in aqueous solutions. The ligands used include model compounds such as thenoyltrifluoroacetone and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and organic analytes of biological or pharmaceutical interest. It is shown that the formation and the luminescent properties of these complexes depend at first on several parameters including the pH and the buffer, the synergic agent and the surfactant. In neutral solutions, trioctylphosphine oxide in the presence of Triton X-100 may act as a co-ligand to promote complex formation and protect the complex from radiationless deactivation processes. Working in slightly alkaline solutions in the presence of EDTA and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride may induce the deprotonation of a second coordinating group and favour the formation of a new complex with stronger luminescent properties. In both cases, the luminescence lifetimes are then ultimately related to the energy gap between the ligand triplet and the resonance level of the ion and to the number of water molecules coordinated to the lanthanide ion.

DNA preparations obtained from several tissues of Rhynchosciara americana and two related species, R. milleri and R. papaveroi, were hybridized to R. americana rRNA. The percentage of hybridization was found to be higher in tissues with low polyteny than in tissues with high polyteny, suggesting a relationship between the amount of rDNA and the tissue polyteny. This could be explained by under-replication of ribosomal cistrons in polytene cells, such as those from the salivary gland. Only slight tissue-dependent changes in the percentages of hybridization can be observed in heterologous hybridization using Xenopus laevis rRNA. The possibility that these experiments could not detect differences in the amount of ribosomal cistrons among tissues is discussed. The female:male ratio for the percentages of hybridization in the salivary gland of R. americana agrees with the results obtained by in situ hybridization experiments (16, 17) which have shown that the rRNA cistrons are distributed among chromosomes other than chromosome X.
Ornithine and citrulline have different arginine-sparing capabilities when provided in an arginine-deficient diet. Rats were fed arginine-deficient diets containing ornithine or citrulline to see the effect on net fluxes of free arginine, ornithine and citrulline across the portal-drained viscera (PDV) and liver. The diets contained either 10 g arginine/kg diet (+Arg) or no arginine: the -Arg/+Ala diet contained additional alanine and the -Arg/+Orn and -Arg/+Cit diets contained ornithine and citrulline, respectively, in amounts isomolar to the amount of arginine in the control (+Arg) diet. Blood arginine concentrations were 50% lower than control values (P < 0.001) in rats fed the -Arg/+Ala or the -Arg/+Orn diet. However, addition of citrulline to the arginine-deficient diet restored blood arginine concentrations. The source of the circulating arginine in the rats fed the -Arg/+Cit diet was neither the PDV nor the liver; net splanchnic uptake of arginine was 0.3 mumol/min. Net citrulline release was substantial from the PDV (0.65 mumol/min) as well as from the splanchnic bed (0.67 mumol/min) of rats fed the -Arg/+Cit diet, such that blood citrulline concentrations were more than double (P < 0.001) those in rats fed the +Arg or -Arg/+Orn diet. Splanchnic release of citrulline in rats fed the -Arg/+Cit diet but not in rats fed the -Arg/+Orn diet supported the production of arginine in non-splanchnic organs such as, presumably, the kidney.
