Spontaneous oscillations of dressed neurons: a new mechanism for epilepsy?

Most modeling studies of neurons and neuronal networks are based on the assumption that the neurons are isolated from their normal environment. Based on recent experimental data we put forward a model for neurons that incorporates the influence of the surrounding glia (dressed neurons). We predict seizurelike spontaneous oscillations in the absence of stimuli for strong coupling between neurons and astrocytes. Consistent with our predictions, a signature of this enhanced crosstalk, over expression of glutamate receptors in astrocytes, has been observed specifically in epileptic tissue.

Dressed Feshbach molecules in the BEC-BCS crossover.

We present the random phase approximation (RPA) theory of the Bose-Einstein-condensation-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer crossover in an atomic Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance that includes the relevant two-body atomic physics exactly. This allows us to determine the probability for the dressed molecules in the Bose-Einstein condensate to be in the closed channel of the Feshbach resonance and to compare with the recent experiments of Partridge et al. [95, 020404 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevLett.95.020404] with , who have measured the same quantity.

Green's function of a dressed particle.

We present a new, highly efficient yet accurate approximation for the Green's functions of dressed particles, using the Holstein polaron as an example. Instead of summing a subclass of self-energy diagrams (e.g., the noncrossed ones, in the self-consistent Born approximation), we sum all the diagrams, but with each diagram averaged over its free propagators' momenta. The resulting Green's function satisfies exactly the first six spectral weight sum rules. All higher sum rules are satisfied with great accuracy, becoming asymptotically exact for coupling both much larger and much smaller than the free particle bandwidth. Possible generalizations to other models are also discussed.

Transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap wound-healing complications in breast reconstruction: assisted closure using foam suction dressing.

Transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap necrosis is a difficult reconstructive problem which historically has entailed protracted management with poor aesthetic outcome. The use of a foam suction dressing achieves effective delayed primary closure of the flap wound with an acceptable aesthetic result. The results of using a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) system were examined in three patients. The VAC system was found to be safe and effective in facilitating the closure of large and complex wounds without skin grafting. This option should thus be given serious consideration in some difficult wound healing situations.

Negative-pressure dressings in the treatment of pressure ulcers.

Applying negative pressure to wounds may speed the formation of granulation tissue, decrease the amount of localized edema, increase blood flow, and accelerate healing. In the present study, we treated ten patients with stage IV chronic pressure ulcers using this negative pressure dressing technique. The long (A) and short (B) diameters of each ulcer were measured to determine size, and the vertical distance from the skin to the deepest point of the ulcer was measured to determine depth. Lesions were measured initially and at weekly intervals. The area of each lesion was taken to be 3.14 x A/2 x B/2 (cm(2)). When we compared the area of ulcer before and after the treatment, the area had been reduced in all cases, and the average reduction was 55.1%. The depth of ulcer also decreased in all cases, and the average reduction was 61.2%. Over the period of evaluation, the method was considered markedly effective in reducing the size and depth of ulcers.

Dithranol-UV-A phototherapy (DUVA) for psoriasis: a treatment without dressings.

Dithranol in yellow soft paraffin with 2% salicylic acid was applied daily (increasing concentrations from 0.2% to 5%) for 1 hour to twenty consecutive patients with diffuse psoriasis. The ointment was then washed off and patients were irradiated with 10 J cm-2 of UV-A radiation since the absorption spectrum of dithranol is maximum in the UV-A waveband. The median clearance time was 14 days (range 7-39 days). No dressings were required. The patients were allowed to apply an emollient if the skin became dry.

Effects of extensive apical reaming and calcium hydroxide dressing on bacterial infection during treatment of apical periodontitis: a pilot study.

An apical dentine sampling technique was applied in order to monitor the bacteriology of the pulp canal and radicular dentine before and during treatment of teeth with chronic apical periodontitis. Twenty-three teeth with a radiographic diagnosis of apical periodontitis were studied. They were subjected to a standardized two-appointment treatment regimen of extensive apical reaming in the absence of antimicrobial agents and 1-week dressing with calcium hydroxide. Bacteriological samples were taken from the root canal at the start, and apical dentine samples at the end, of each sitting. Provision was made to allow growth of anaerobic bacteria. All root canals but one showed growth at the start of treatment. Dentine samples were positive in 14 of the 23 teeth at the end of the first appointment. Eight of the 23 canals had detectable growth from the canal at the start of the second appointment, but in sufficient numbers for quantification in only one root canal. The subsequent dentine samples were otherwise negative at the second appointment. There was a tendency for teeth causing symptoms to harbour more bacteria than symptomless teeth.

Getting dressed in the early morning: styles of staff/patient interaction on rehabilitation hospital wards for elderly people.

This paper presents findings from a study of the nursing role in rehabilitation hospital wards for elderly people and focuses on early morning dressing; this is a microcosm of service delivery but it illustrates the way in which institutional practices impinge on patient experiences and highlights areas which warrant attention for the future development of rehabilitation services for elderly people in hospital. The reported findings are drawn from a non-participant structured observational study of 'early morning rising' on rehabilitation wards for elderly people.

A study of the efficacy of dressings in preventing infections of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis catheter exit sites.

This paper describes a preliminary investigation into the efficacy of dressings in preventing catheter exit site infections in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). It has been carried out in the form of a pilot study. The background to the study is described and the literature is reviewed. This revealed that it is an important field of research. Exit site infections are the main cause of morbidity and treatment failure in CAPD patients. The rationale for carrying the study out, the findings and the implications for further study are reported and discussed. There is little guidance in current literature for clinicians on the prevention of catheter exit site infection. Patients are difficult to recruit to research studies. Practising nurses need training and careful management as data collectors.

Lichen amyloidosus treated by hydrocolloid dressings.

We hereby report a case of lichen amyloidosus in a 69-year-old man unresponsive to various treatments. The patient was treated by occlusion with hydrocolloid dressings. Considerable subjective and objective improvement was observed with respect to the pruritus and cosmetic appearance. We suggest this convenient and efficacious treatment as first line therapy.

The promotion of wound healing following chemosurgery (Mohs' technique) by dressings with a lotion of benzoyl peroxide.

A lotion of benzoyl peroxide was applied postoperatively to chemosurgical wounds in a small group of patients. The technique of utilizing dressings of benzoyl peroxide is described and illustrated. Enhanced wound healing was observed in all cases. The effects appear to be due, at least in part, to antimicrobial activity, debriding activity, hyperbaric oxygenation, and stimulation of granulation.

A synthetic skin substitute as a temporary dressing in Mohs surgery.

Epigard (Synthes, Paoli, PA), a synthetic skin substitute, is useful in the temporary covering of surgical wounds. The dressing adheres to the wound bed, provides hemostasis, and aids neovascularization. When removed after 2-3 days, the surgeon has a wound ready to accept a graft.

A technique to accurately construct a contact dressing.

We describe a technique to rapidly and accurately construct the contact layer of a composite dressing. This technique is simple to perform and is suitable for any open wound. It is especially useful for moderately sized wounds created during extirpation of tumors by Mohs micrographic surgery.

Compression stockings and non-continuous use of polyurethane foam dressings for the treatment of venous ulceration. A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Venous ulceration is usually treated with Unna's boot. Recently another product, Ulcer-care, has been developed to treat these ulcers. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic value of Ulcer-care. METHODS: Over 24 months, 20 ambulatory patients with 30 lower extremity stasis ulcers were treated with a product consisting of: 1) a hydrophilic polyurethane sponge covered by a hydrophobic membrane changed daily or every other day; 2) an inner liner stocking that applies 10 mmHg pressure and is worn 24 hours a day; and 3) a surgical stocking with a posterior zipper that applies 30 mmHg graduated pressure and is removed at night. RESULTS: All ulcers healed after 2 to 30 weeks (mean 8.3 weeks) including 15 previously treated by Unna's boot or hydrocolloid dressings and 3 infected ulcers. CONCLUSION: The Ulcer care treatment for stasis ulcers is highly successful, easy to use, and well accepted by patients.

Microbial purification technique of mineral dressing plants reject waters.

Earlier investigations on laboratory and pilot plant scale have shown the resort to microorganisms to be a practicable approach to the problem of purifying mineral dressing plant reject waters from residual flotation reagents and/or metal ions. In spite of the proven effectiveness of this method, one major drawback, namely the pathogenicity of some microorganisms, has so far hampered its application on a commercial scale. A research programme, aimed at developing a microbial reject water purification technique utilizing non-pathogenic strains was thus drawn up and is currently being implemented. Strains such as Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, which are not harmful to human health, some of them being commonly found in the human intestine, have been successfully tested for removing alkylsulphates, alkylamines and fatty acids from solutions simulating flotation plant tailings waters. Removals as high as 90% in less than 48 h can be easily achieved with no nutrient requirements, since in most cases the flotation reagent residue to be removed is metabolized by the microorganisms themselves.

Disinfection by endodontic irrigants and dressings of experimentally infected dentinal tubules.

The effect of endodontic irrigants and dressings was tested on bacteria in bovine dentin specimens experimentally infected with Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus sanguis, Escherichia coli, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Standardized, cylindrical dentin test pieces were prepared and cleaned by ultrasonic treatment with EDTA and sodium hypochlorite. The specimens were infected with the test organism for periods up to 14 days, and the degree of infection into the tubules was monitored using Brown & Brenn stain, scanning electron microscopy, and culturing of dentin dust from sequential bur samples starting from the pulpal side. E. faecalis rapidly infected the whole length of the tubules; S. sanguis required up to 2 weeks for complete infection; E. coli only penetrated to some 600 microns, even after prolonged incubation periods. P. aeruginosa infected dentin quickly, but apparently in very low numbers. E. faecalis persisted for at least 10 d after withdrawal of nutrient support, whereas the other 3 organisms died within 4 to 48 h. Endodontic medicaments were applied to infected specimen for comparison of antibacterial potency. Camphorated p-monochlorophenol was generally more efficient than Calasept, and of the irrigants tested, iodine potassium iodide appeared more potent than sodium hypochlorite or chlorhexidine. The presence of a smear layer delayed, but did not eliminate, the effect of the medicaments.
