Since the start of the second Palestinian uprising (Al-Aqsa Intifada), and due to the Israeli activities, curfews, closures, and military checkpoints imposed since 2000, the quality of social services rendered by Nablus city has been gradually deteriorating. Solid waste management in Nablus city was badly affected by these conditions, and this situation is negatively affecting health and damaging the environment. Most of these cases were due to reasons beyond the capability of the municipality with its limited resources. This study revealed that some of the important municipal solid waste (MSW) equipment had been damaged during the uprising. The workforce in the MSW system was reduced and certain MSW-related development projects and activities have been frozen due to the current conditions. The city's medical waste incinerator had been phased out and the number of special medical containers had been reduced from 16 to 10. Some MSW compressing trucks had been out of use with no substitute. Another important figure is the number of waste collection workers which decreased from 420 to 301, although the city is growing in premises as well as population. The created unsanitary solid waste transfer station is now a pollution source on its own, causing an ugly scene at the eastern entrance of Nablus city. There should be a comprehensive and urgent solution for this problem and the needed resources should be invested.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the direction and magnitude of the effects among the components of staff satisfaction in residential aged care and to examine whether the relationships among satisfaction components vary according to facility type (i.e. nursing homes and hostels). A hostel is a low care facility in which residents are more independent, have a lower level of care needs, and receive personal but not nursing care. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design was adopted to collect the required information, and a stratified random sampling approach was utilized to select facilities. Structural equation modeling was used to examine relationships among satisfaction components. SETTING: Seventy residential aged care facilities in Western Australia. STUDY PARTICIPANTS: The sample includes 610 nursing home and 373 hostel care staff. RESULTS: The relationships among satisfaction components are different for nursing home and hostel staff. Professional support is found to have a strong and positive effect on all other aspects of staff satisfaction. CONCLUSION: The findings lead to an improved understanding of the interrelationship among staff satisfaction components, which has important implications through enhancing professional support. This needs to be recognized and emphasized by managers, care providers, and policy makers so as to maintain stable personnel and continuity of care.

The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Program at the University of South Carolina recently developed an environmental management system (EMS) based on the ISO 14001 International Standard. Since our radiation safety program must already meet strict state licensing requirements, the process of conforming to this standard was relatively easy to accomplish. The EH&S program achieved certification to the ISO 14001 standard in August of 2002. The benefits of the EMS include: better interaction between radiation safety and other EH&S program entities, holds all employees accountable by closely tracking program activities, presents a clear picture of program accomplishments to the university administration, allows for better use of limited resources and provides for continuous program improvement.

Reports on a survey of 1990 and 1991 graduates entering the speech and language therapy profession in the UK and on the experiences of six new therapists in one "good practice" area, Ayrshire and Arran Health Board. Results show that new therapists were given a great deal of help and support from professional managers, and valued it highly. They chose posts which offered a mixed client load and good induction packages. Pre-service training reflected work carried out in service, but all client groups had not been accessed during training. Issues relating to throughput and case-load management required most support. They made successful personal adaptations to the work environment, and managers found them effective overall. Calculates the costs of supporting new therapists. Highlights the need to maintain professional support and discusses the potential difficulties involved in doing so in relation to NHS reforms.
Examines the links between workforce demand and two health care related markets, the first being the internal market between purchasers and providers of health care, and the second the market for education expressed between colleges of education as providers and NHS Trusts as purchasers of the courses. Workforce demand has to take account of the numbers of people on courses, but also specialist skills required to enable NHS Trusts to deliver changing health care needs of the future.
"The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze patterns of labor absorption by occupation in the Dominican Republic using national population census data." The author develops a measure that facilitates the identification of patterns of labor absorption into various occupations. The results, based on data for the period 1970-1981, show sharp differentials by sex and zone. It is found that the service sector is absorbing more workers but that agriculture is not, even in rural areas.
"This paper analyses whether the basic monocentric model of urban structure and commuting explains actual commuting in Europe, i.e. The Netherlands. As in the USA much wasteful commuting is established. The basic model has a low degree of explanatory power. In order to get more in line with actual commuting, the paper elaborates two alternatives to the basic model. Besides a deconcentrated model, a cross-traffic model is developed. Particularly the latter is quite successful in explaining actual commuting. The paper pleads for endogenising employment and stresses heterogeneity in labour demand and supply."
