The case for pharmaceutical care as pharmacy's mission for the 1990s is presented. The emergence of pharmacy as a clinical profession has given pharmacists the skills and knowledge to improve the outcomes of drug therapy. It also presents them with the responsibility for those results. Practitioners of pharmaceutical care are concerned with the effect of their services on patients' quality of life and not merely with the act of providing services. They work with other health-care professionals as equals to ensure that therapeutic goals are achieved and that drug-related illness does not occur or is quickly detected and resolved. To be accepted and implemented, pharmaceutical care must first overcome pharmacy's product- and service-oriented focus, opposition from other health-care professions and drug manufacturers, financial and logistical problems, and ignorance and inertia among pharmacists themselves. Through a united effort, pharmacy organizations, schools, and individual pharmacists can translate the need for pharmaceutical care into demands for it by patients, insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, and the government. Pharmaceutical skills and knowledge have developed to the point where pharmacists must share in responsibility for the outcomes of drug therapy.

A regional summer internship program for pharmacy students that was coordinated by seven hospitals is described. Recruiting for the Mid-Missouri Summer Intern Program began during the winter of 1987-88. Students were recruited from pharmacy schools throughout the Midwest and were provided with housing and financial compensation while in the program. Each participating hospital agreed to hire at least one intern and appointed a preceptor or coordinating pharmacist, who met with the intern regularly. Students got most of their training and work experience at their home hospital; however, they also rotated to the other participating hospital pharmacy departments. Students had to keep a daily diary of their activities and to complete individual special projects. At the end of the summer, students and preceptors completed a written evaluation of the program. Students indicated that the program provided a valuable and unique educational experience. Preceptors thought that fourth-year and fifth-year students were best suited for the program. The hospital pharmacy directors agreed that the opportunity to evaluate a student's work ethic and professional capabilities before offering a position was a benefit. A regional summer internship program was successful in introducing pharmacy students to institutional pharmacy practice.

With the complexity of modern societal and health issues, and with the knowledge explosion and concomitant escalation of specialization and fragmentation, interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork will take on ever-increasing importance in the years ahead. For cooperation to become a generally accepted policy, there needs to be full understanding of interdisciplinarity and what promotes or hinders it. Resocialization, training, and new skills will be required of educators, practitioners, and administrators. Only then will faculty participate in and teach, practitioners practice, and institutions support interdisciplinary collaboration.
Although a number of problems in connection with the use of shot biopsy have yet to be solved, it can be stated that by this technique biopsy samples of sufficient quantity (up to 1.5 g) can be obtained from the musculus longissimus dorsi of pigs of about 80 kg liveweight. The technique offers data on the metabolic status (biophysical and biochemical values) of muscles, provided that the postmortal processes have been simulated (incubation of bioptate). The use of sensitivity tests on isolated subcellular fractions of the bioptate can lead to more precise results and consequently, to a remarkable reduction in the incidence of PSE syndrome (pale, soft, exudative meat). The first results achieve under conditions of Slovakia (Czechoslovakia) in testing boars show that this method could find a permanent use in the practice. Research institutions in a number of countries are now investigating possibilities of using shot biopsy for prediction of skeletal muscle disorders in pigs and it is excepted that many new results will be published soon.
