[Effect of switching off the globus pallidus on alimentary and electrophysiologic responses induced by stimulation of the hypothalamus].

In chronic experiments on eight cats a direct electrical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus evoked: 1) food eating in a state of satiation and 2) a reproduction of a conditioned food-procuring reflex, preliminarily elaborated to an acoustic signal. Bilateral electrolytic ablation of the globus pallidum abolished both reactions, but for different time periods. The first one was restored spontaneously on the 20th to the 46th day; the second disappeared for 2.5 to 8.5 months without spontaneous restoration. Stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus alimentary zones brought about a statistically significant rise of the thresholds of desynchronization reactions in the ipsi- and contralateral sensorimotor cortex. The activating role of the globus pallidum in the organization of a motivational alimentary excitation is discussed.

[Functional characteristics of the hippocampus after switching off visual afferentation in early ontogenesis].

EEG reactions to afferent stimuli and the driving responses (DR) to photic flickering with 1-15 sec frequency were studied in different brain structures of rabbits lacking visual experience (from the 8th to the 23rd and from the 57th to the 90th day of life). The orienting reaction in the first few days of the light regime is characterized by enhanced motor and respiratory components and is not extinguished for a long time when the stimulus is repeated. It is attended with theta-rhythm in the hippocampus EEG and desynchronized activity in the neocortical areas. DR is characterized by spatial-temporal dissociation; its development is markedly retarded in the cortical projection zone of the visual system, and of the archicortex structures, in the dentate fascia, as compared with the hippocampus proper, the midbrain reticular formation and the auditory cortex. The DR index equals the level of that of the control animals after nine to twelve days of their life in the light. The results obtained attest that the observed differences in the changes of the functional characteristics of the hippocampus and other brain structures depend on the mode of the central organization of the reaction, whose correlate is the studied EEG-parameter.

Neural network simulations, cortical connectivity, and schizophrenic psychosis.

Recent studies have suggested that reduced corticocortical connectivity is associated with schizophrenia. My colleagues and I have used neural network simulations to explore parallel, distributed processing systems with reduced connectivity. These systems often behaved in a "schizophrenic-like" manner. Excessively pruned attractor networks became functionally fragmented, suggesting "loose associations," and produced recurrent, intrusive representations suggestive of delusions. Pruning backpropagation simulations of speech perception networks produced spontaneous output, which provided a model of auditory hallucination or "voices." This model also suggested how dopamine-blocking drugs may reduce positive symptoms, and why negative symptoms arise in the wake of positive symptoms.

[The effect of lithium chloride on the desynchronization of "reserpine-induced depression"].

Lithium chloride (5 mg/kg i.m. for 10 days in the morning but not in the evening) prevented effectively desynchronization of "reserpine depression" in mice and rats: the spectra and structure of the rhythms of behavioral parameters (open field), body temperature, content of serotonin and its metabolites in the brain and that of glucocorticoids in blood plasma were almost the same as those in intact animals; the circadian harmony of all parameters were correlated in the best manner and their mean circadian values were restored.

[The spatial organization of the electrical processes in the brain: the problems and the solutions].

In the paper the theoretical problems are discussed of the spatial organization of brain electrical activity. It is considered as a multilevel realization of synergetic principle in formation of functional systems, which underlie behavior and mental activity. The role is discussed of the spatial-temporal superposition of coherent structures of potentials in generation of the cortical fields of increased activity, which realize the integrative and associative functions. A hypothesis is proposed about the alignment of "energy" and "information" factors of coherent structures as one of the important characteristics of efficiency of biological energy-information processes. The necessity is emphasized of taking into account both linear and nonlinear correlations of biopotentials to gain an insight into the forms and functional significance of their spatial organization.

[The baseline gamma oscillations in neural networks with interhemispheric connections].

The evidence obtained from the studies of EEG high-frequency components and computer simulation which determined the necessary conditions for occurrence of oscillations were compared with some features of spontaneous gamma oscillations, which had been revealed by us in interconnections of neurons located in symmetrical loci of both hemispheres of motor cortex of anaesthetized rats. Based on the similarity of the most expressed high-frequency EEG components and dominant frequencies of gamma oscillations, we proposed that gamma oscillations could underlie the appearance of the high-frequency EEG components. Taking into account the obtained by us results that interhemispheric oscillations occurred 1.5 times more frequently than ipsilateral and the evidence from computer simulation experiments that reciprocal inhibition underlies oscillations in neural networks, we suggested that transcallosal inhibition was more effective than inhibition between the neighbouring cells. Parameters of simultaneously revealed spontaneous oscillations caused by interhemispheric and ipsilateral interactions and in individual cell activity could be different. It was assumed that functional variability of local neocortical networks and participation of different inhibitory neurons underlie distinctions in oscillation parameters.

[Focal hypersynchronous activity in the EEG of children with specific developmental deficits: is there a clinical relevance?].

Focal hypersynchronous activity in children with specific developmental deficits: Are there any clinical implications? To determine the frequency of focal hypersynchronous activity (HSA) in the EEGs of a child and adolescent psychiatry client population we evaluated 762 patients between 3 and 15 years old. Children with neurological problems, including epilepsy, craniocerebral trauma and psychotic disorders, and children on medication were excluded, as well as those with general developmental delays or abnormal EEG findings (except focal HSA). We then compared our data with those of two epidemiological investigations, in which 1.9% and 2.4%, respectively, of the children without psychiatric problems were found to have focal HSA. The children in our study with dyslexia or disorders of motor function had significantly higher rates of HSA. The boys with psychiatric findings (except those with speech and language disorders) appeared to have a higher rate of HSA. These findings support the hypothesis that focal HSA is probably an expression of a cerebral dysfunction of genetic origin. The symptomatology seems to depend on the moment of manifestation and the localization.

[Effect of graded hypoxia and sodium oxybutyrate on the EEG of monkeys].

The effect on the EEG of a gaseous hypoxic mixture with 10 per cent of oxygen per se and with superimposed action of sodium oxybutyrate in a dose of 50 mg/kg was investigated in tests on macacas rhesus. Following introduction of sodium oxybutyrate an elimination of deviations from the initial EEG findings was registered.

[Nonspecific reaction of the nervous system to non-ionizing radiation].

Using different electromagnetic fields we investigated reactions of brain by different methods (psychophysical, behavioural, electrographical and morphological). We discover nonspecific initial adaptive reaction of brain (IARB). This IARB include weak pain, inhibition of learning, EEG reaction of synchronisation and activation neuroglia.

[The nonstability of the EEG: a methodological and experimental analysis].

Theoretical, methodological and methodical aspects on nonstationary EEGs, that is, EEGs whose patterns undergo changes with time are reviewed. The piecewise description of the EEG is confirmed on the base of the own data and results of another investigators. It is analysed the basic approach to statistical evaluation of nonstationary EEGs in the terms of quasi-stationary segments. The special attention is devoted tho the data of segmental organization of the bioelectrical field of the cortex. Taking into consideration new experimental data concerning the time consistency of the segmental descriptions of regional EEGs it is suggested conception of "operational synchrony" as a form of discretial cooperation of cortex process. The theoretical explanations of the phenomenology for piecewise functioning of neuron nets are discussed.

[The noncoherent components of evoked brain activity].

Poststimulus spectral EEG changes and their correlation with evoked potential (EP) were analyzed. The non-stationary components of the brain evoked activity were revealed in 32 volunteers during simple motor reaction and choice reaction to visual stimuli. This nonstationary activity was manifested in poststimulus changes in the mean wave half-period duration (MWHPD) and mean wave half-period power of the delta- and beta-frequency oscillations computed in the EEG realizations after the EP subtraction. The latencies of high-frequency EP components fell into the intervals of the MWHPD decrease and increase in the power of beta-oscillations, and the latencies of low-frequency EP components coincided with the intervals of the MWHPD increase and decrease in the power of delta and beta-oscillations, which pointed to correlation of these changes with the EP.

[Spatial relationships of electrical activity during reproduction of verbal signals in children].

The study of intercentral correlations of the brain biopotentials in five-to six year old children revealed considerable differences in the spatial distribution of interrelations of the neocortex projection and associative zones during reproduction of familiar and unfamiliar words. Reproduction of familiar words was accompanied by the greatest enhancement of interrelations of associative structures (infraparietal, frontal areas and Broca speech centre) with projection zones of the motor and acoustic analysers in the left hemisphere, while reproduction of unfamiliar words was attented with closer connections of the projection motor zone with the temporal and the anterior associative (frontal and speech) zones in the right hemisphere. The facts obtained testify to the existence of the interhemispheric asymmetry and to the different involvement of the neocortex projection and associative zones in the organization of motor speech in children.

Phase synchronization analysis of EEG during attentional blink.

The attentional blink (AB) phenomenon occurs when perceivers must report two targets embedded in a sequence of distracters; if the first target precedes the second by 200-600 msec, the second one is often missed. We investigated AB by measuring dynamic cross-lag phase synchronization for 565 electrode pairs in 40-Hz-range EEG. Phase synchrony, on average, was higher in experimental conditions, where two targets are reported, than in control conditions, where only the second target is reported. The effect occurred in electrode pairs covering the whole head. Timing of the synchrony was crucial: Brief episodes of enhanced synchrony occurred 100-500 msec before expected target onset in AB conditions where the second target was correctly reported. These results show that intrinsic brain dynamics produce anticipatory synchronization in transient assemblies of cortical areas. Enhanced levels of anticipatory synchronization occur in response to the demands of the task in conditions where the system's limited capacity is under strain.

Spike synchronization and firing rate in a population of motor cortical neurons in relation to movement direction and reaction time.

We studied the dynamics of precise spike synchronization and rate modulation in a population of neurons recorded in monkey motor cortex during performance of a delayed multidirectional pointing task and determined their relation to behavior. We showed that at the population level neurons coherently synchronized their activity at various moments during the trial in relation to relevant task events. The comparison of the time course of the modulation of synchronous activity with that of the firing rate of the same neurons revealed a considerable difference. Indeed, when synchronous activity was highest, at the end of the preparatory period, firing rate was low, and, conversely, when the firing rate was highest, at movement onset, synchronous activity was almost absent. There was a clear tendency for synchrony to precede firing rate, suggesting that the coherent activation of cell assemblies may trigger the increase in firing rate in large groups of neurons, although it appeared that there was no simple parallel shifting in time of these two activity measures. Interestingly, there was a systematic relationship between the amount of significant synchronous activity within the population of neurons and movement direction at the end of the preparatory period. Furthermore, about 400 ms later, at movement onset, the mean firing rate of the same population was also significantly tuned to movement direction, having roughly the same preferred direction as synchronous activity. Finally, reaction time measurements revealed a directional preference of the monkey with, once again, the same preferred direction as synchronous activity and firing rate. These results lead us to speculate that synchronous activity and firing rate are cooperative neuronal processes and that the directional matching of our three measures--firing rate, synchronicity, and reaction times--might be an effect of behaviorally induced network cooperativity acquired during learning.

Evoked potential study of the synchronizing and hypnogenic areas in the basal forebrain.

On stimulating various basal forebrain structures, characteristic cortical evoked potentials, basic elements of the synchronization elicited, were studied in acute immobilized cats. Stimulation of the LH/10 cps/ resulted in short latency positive-negative evoked potentials, similar responses of increased latency were elicited from the RPO and TbOf. The laterobasal RPO and TbOf, the only areas able to induce cortical synchronization upon high frequency stimulation, could be clearly distinguished on the basis of evoked potentials. The laterobasal RPO was characterized by short latency, long-lasting positive potentials, while stimulation of TbOf elicited negative-positive responses. The relationship between the evoked potentials and the synchronizing mechanism of the basal forebrain is discussed.
