Sensory discrimination and intelligence: testing Spearman's other hypothesis.

At the centenary of Spearman's seminal 1904 article, his general intelligence hypothesis remains one of the most influential in psychology. Less well known is the article's other hypothesis that there is "a correspondence between what may provisionally be called 'General Discrimination' and 'General Intelligence' which works out with great approximation to one or absoluteness" (Spearman, 1904, p. 284). Studies that do not find high correlations between psychometric intelligence and single sensory discrimination tests do not falsify this hypothesis. This study is the first directly to address Spearman's general intelligence-general sensory discrimination hypothesis. It attempts to replicate his findings with a similar sample of schoolchildren. In a well-fitting structural equation model of the data, general intelligence and general discrimination correlated .92. In a reanalysis of data published byActon and Schroeder (2001), general intelligence and general sensory ability correlated .68 in men and women. One hundred years after its conception, Spearman's other hypothesis achieves some confirmation. The association between general intelligence and general sensory ability remains to be replicated and explained.

Q-probes study of replicate specimens at the clinical laboratory, the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this Q-probes study was to evaluate the precision of replicate specimens. METHODS: This Q-probes study done at the Clinical Laboratory, The Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi is about routine chemistry analytes because of their importance in critical care patients. The analytes data was collected for six months from April to September 2002. There were total 358 samples, which were given for reanalysis during this period under the constant working conditions. After analysis, results of both the runs on different days, were compared to determine the percent difference between the results. After calculating the percent difference, the results were either accepted or rejected on the basis of guidelines set by CLIA 88(Clinical Laboratories Improvement Amendment 1988). RESULTS: Among 358 results, 5 were rejected according to the criteria selected. All of these results were then subjected to statistical analysis for calculating statistical significance. As our Null hypothesis was that the prevalence of rejected results were more than 2% with an acceptable limit of less than or equal to 2%. We failed to accept the Null hypothesis that means that it did not exceed the acceptable limits (p-value = 0.962930) with the Confidence Interval range of 0.2 -2.6 where Upper Confidence Interval is still less than 5% for a p-value of 0.05. The rejection of null hypothesis favors high precision between the two sets of results in our studied population. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that Q-Probes study of replicate specimens at the Clinical Laboratory at The Aga Khan University Hospital is within the acceptable limits. These figures show that a high quality precision is maintained among the observed specimens. This is an ongoing exercise and studies like these should be a continuous process to maintain and enhance the quality of Laboratory results).

Evaluation of dust activity and climate effects in North China.

TOMS/AI data with nearly 20 years are utilized in the paper to evaluate dust activities in North China. Combined with simultaneous NCEP reanalysis climate data, climate effects on dust activities are assessed. The results showed that the whole North China suffers impact by dust aerosols, with three centers standing out in TOMS/AI spring average map that are western three basins, which are characterized by lower annual precipitation and elevation. Gobi deserts in Mongolia Plateau do not attain higher TOMS/AI value due to cloud contamination and relative higher elevation. Spring is the season with the highest TOMS dust aerosol index; within the western three basins, high dust aerosol index appears in both spring and summer, especially in Tarim Basin. Wind speed in spring and precipitation in previous rainy season play important roles in controlling dust activities, higher wind speed and less precipitation than the normal are in favor of dust activities in spring. Temperature in spring and previous winter also affect dust activity to a certain extent, but with contrary spatial distribution. Temperature in winter exert effect principally in west part, contrarily, temperature effect in spring is mainly shown in east part. Both of them have negative correlation with dust activity.

[The logistic regression model including interactions between the factor variables demonstrated for the detection of E. coli O157.H7 in artificially contaminated minced beef].

Logistic regression is a powerful tool to analyse data sets with a dichotomous response variable. However, in most situations it is used as a model without interactions between the factor variables. This is done either by presumption or to avoid difficulties in the interpretation of the statistical results. In this article first the model of simple logistic regression without interactions is introduced followed by the expanded model with pairwise interactions between the factors. The application of both models is demonstrated at the present data set concerning the detection of E. coli O157.H7 in artificially contaminated minced beef. The influencing variables are the factors enrichment time, inoculation density, enrichment broth, subculturing medium, and state of samples (fresh vs. deep frozen). The statistical reanalysis displayed strongly differing results emphasizing the importance of interactions in logistic regression models. In particular, the odds ratio for E. coli detection dependant from the enrichment time (24 h vs. 6 h) (OR = 0.41) was strongly overestimated without simultaneous attention of the E. coli inoculation density (OR approximately equal to 0.2 to 0.02). In this context the possible interpretation of the interaction is discussed.

Validation study of the TrueAllele automated data review system.

The New York State Convicted Offender DNA Databank is the first U.S. lab to complete an internal validation of the TrueAllele expert data review system. TrueAllele is designed to assess short tandem repeat (STR) DNA data based on several key features such as peak height, shape, area, and position relative to a standard ladder and use this information to make accurate allele calls. The software then prioritizes the allele calls based on several user-defined rules. As a result, the user need only review low-quality data. The validation of this system consisted of an extensive optimization phase and a large concordance phase. During optimization, the rule settings were tailored to minimize the amount of high-quality data viewed by the user. In the concordance phase, a large dataset was typed in parallel with the ABI software Gene Scan and Genotyper (manual review) and TrueAllele (automated review) for comparison of allele calls and sample state assignment. Only one significant difference was discovered out of 2048 samples in the concordance study. In this case, TrueAllele revealed a spike in the profile that was interpreted as a DNA peak by the analyst in Genotyper. TrueAllele was designed to focus the review on poor data and to eliminate the need for complete reanalysis technical review. This validation project proved TrueAllele to be dependable for use at the NYS Convicted Offender DNA Databank.

A case-control study of risk factors for invasive cervical cancer among U.S. women exposed to oncogenic types of human papillomavirus.

Oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, the necessary cause of most cervical cancers, are common and usually clear within 1 to 2 years. Identifying cofactors that lead to cancer among HPV-infected women has depended mainly on case-control studies defining HPV by DNA testing. DNA testing assesses only current infection; thus, concerns about residual confounding remain. To assess cofactors, we used seropositivity to five oncogenic HPV types as a marker of past exposure and confined our analysis to seropositive controls compared with cancer cases. Study subjects had participated in a multicenter U.S. case-control study conducted in the early 1980s. The detailed questionnaire and stored sera for 235 cases of squamous carcinoma and 486 controls motivated the reanalysis. We measured antibodies to HPV types 16, 18, 31, 45, and 52. Independent, significant predictors of seropositivity among controls included numbers of sexual partners, Black race, and oral contraceptive use. Condom use was protective. Among HPV-exposed women, Papanicolaou screening, Black race, and yeast infection were significantly associated with reduced cancer risk. Current smoking was associated with a 2-fold increase in risk; there were independent, significant trends of increased risk with numbers of cigarettes smoked (P for trend = 0.003) and years of smoking (P for trend = 0.01). Other significant predictors of increased risk included low education and income and history of nonspecific genital infection. Unlike recent HPV DNA-based investigations, based on the use of HPV-seropositive controls in this study, oral contraceptive use was unrelated to the risk of cervical cancer and multiparity was only weakly related to risk. It is particularly worth considering further why studies of different designs are inconsistent regarding the effect of oral contraceptive use.

Elimination of fibrinogen interference in a dye-binding method for iron.

Serum iron concentrations greater than 90 mumol/L were measured in samples from hemodialysis patients by a Ferrozine dye-binding method. Reanalysis by coulometry showed these results to be spuriously high. Turbidity resulting from precipitation of fibrinogen was identified as the source of the interference. High concentrations of heparin enhanced the effect. We conclude that the persistence of fibrinogen in serum samples from patients treated with anticoagulants is a potential interference in Ferrozine dye-binding methods performed without prior deproteinization. Adding guanidine.HCl to the acid buffer reagent is a simple way to eliminate this interference.

[The 4-component model of body composition].

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of knowing the corporal composition according to the model of the four components (fat, mineral, fat free and aqueous) the same was calculated in 220 women and 130 men, considered as normal, between the ages of 15 and 49. METHODS: The corporal components were determined with double energy x-ray densitometry with the component corresponding to water being obtained from the fat free component, thereby evaluating the four principal parts of corporal composition. RESULTS: In the men all of the values except those of fat were greater than in the women (p less than 0.001), with the fat in the latter being (p less than 0.001). The values of mineral content demonstrated sexual differences in reaching of the peak of osseous mass and were maintained stable in women up to the age of 49. CONCLUSIONS: With regards to the mineral component, there is a sexual difference in achieving the maximum value. While the fat values in men are super-impossible to those referred in the literature for ther media and with other techniques they are not so in women, in whom superior values are observed leading to reanalysis of how the physical constitution, habits and way of life of women in this country may have repercussions in this sense.

Effects of the blood-collection tube material and long-term storage on platelet activation parameters on the ADVIA 120/2120 hematology system.

The ADVIA 120/2120 Hematology System provides a number of novel parameters of platelet activation. Although the effects of anticoagulant in the blood-collection tube, short-term storage, and ambient temperature on these parameters have been documented in the literature, the effects of long-term storage and the material of the blood-draw tube have not been investigated. We therefore compared platelet activation parameter values obtained with the ADVIA 120 for 50 paired blood samples collected into BD Medical Systems' Vacutainer K(3)EDTA glass tubes and Vacutainer K(2)EDTA Plus plastic tubes and analyzed within 4 hours and after 24 hours following venipuncture. We found a statistically significant but clinically irrelevant decrease (less than 1%) in mean platelet component (MPC) concentration in plastic compared with glass for blood samples analyzed within 4 hours of draw. Reanalysis of the samples after 24 hours showed a clinically and statistically significant increase in mean platelet volume and significant decreases in MPC, platelet component distribution width, and mean platelet mass. These storage-induced changes were of equal magnitude for both tube types. We conclude that the use of plastic versus glass blood-draw tubes should have no clinically significant effect on the parameters of platelet activation on the ADVIA 120/2120 system and that the changes in platelet activation parameters continue to be present at 24 hours.

Occurrence and correlations between coliphages and anthropogenic viruses in the Massachusetts Bay using enrichment and ICC-nPCR.

We evaluated a two-step enrichment procedure to detect coliphages and an integrated cell culture-nested polymerase chain reaction (ICC-nPCR) to detect human astrovirus, enteroviruses, rotavirus and adenovirus type 40 and 41 in marine water samples collected by the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA). MWRA has been monitoring its receiving waters for coliphages, anthropogenic viruses and indicator bacteria in order to evaluate the impact of Boston's Deer Island Sewage Treatment Plant discharge. Coliphages and enteric viruses were originally assayed using single agar overlay and most probable number cell culture (MPN) methods, respectively. Reanalysis of these samples for enteric viruses by ICC-nPCR demonstrated that 46% were positive for at least one virus compared with 23% with the MPN method. Use of the enrichment method showed a 47% increase in the detection of male specific and somatic coliphages compared with the single agar overlay method. Correlations between the presence of coliphages, enteric viruses and indicator bacteria were based on proximity to the treatment plant discharge, seasonal variations and site levels. The presence of enteric viruses was significantly correlated to coliphages but not to indicator bacteria. Preliminary comparative results demonstrate that effective and efficient monitoring of anthropogenic contamination can be achieved using these more sensitive and specific techniques.

Categorical replies to categorical questions by cross-fostered chimpanzees.

The chimpanzees Washoe, Moja, Tatu, and Dar were reared under human cross-fostering conditions that included the use of American Sign Language (ASL) as the medium of two-way communication. In the course of everyday conversation they were asked, in signs, the Wh-questions that are typically asked of young children. In earlier studies, extensive samples showed a pattern of replies, most significantly a developmental sequence, that closely matched the pattern found in the replies of young children. Part 1 of this report is based on a special sample taken when Tatu was 63 months old and Dar was 56 months old, in which experimenters used a large pool of nameable objects, and asked a naming question and at least one descriptive question about the same object in the same context. Tatu and Dar replied to naming questions (WHAT THAT? or WHAT NAME THAT?) with signs that were nouns and to descriptive questions with signs that were modifiers: possessive pronouns for WHOSE THAT?, colors for WHAT COLOR THAT?, and materials for WHAT THAT MAKE FROM? Part 2 is a reanalysis of the Part 1 sample and several other samples of replies, demonstrating that even when their reply was incorrect, these chimpanzees usually replied with a sign from the category specified by the question. The continuities that biologists seek are continuities of laws, patterns of resemblance rather than overlapping data points. Results reported here add depth to the patterns demonstrated in earlier studies.

The Social Functioning Questionnaire: a rapid and robust measure of perceived functioning.

BACKGROUND: The Social Functioning Questionnaire (SFQ), an eight-item self-report scale (score range 0-24), was developed from the Social Functioning Schedule (SFS), a semi-structured interview which has been used primarily with non-psychotic patients and has good test-retest and inter-rater reliability as well as construct validity. The SFQ was developed following the need for a quick assessment of perceived social function. AIMS: To give further details of old and new data sets from studies involving over 4000 subjects assessed with the SFQ illustrating its epidemiological and clinical associations. METHOD: New data were analysed from a national epidemiological study, a comparison of key-worker and subject versions of the SFQ, and reanalysis of data from three earlier clinical studies, of psychiatric emergencies, general practice psychiatric patients and those with recurrent psychotic illnesses. These data were examined further to determine their range, their relationship to other clinical measures, and change over time in clinical trials. RESULTS: The population mean score in 4164 subjects was 4.6 and the data from all studies suggested that a score of 10 or more indicated poor social functioning. Those presenting as psychiatric emergencies had the poorest social function (mean 11.4) and psychiatric patients from general practice the best function (mean 7.7) of the clinical populations. The eight item scores had a normal distribution in psychiatric populations and a skewed one in a normal population; scores were relatively stable over the short (weeks) and long-term (months), and were high in the presence of acute mental health disturbance and personality disorder, giving support to the validity of the scale. The results from a UK sample of a randomly selected population specifically weighted for ethnic minorities showed similar social function across groups.

Short report: impact of ivermectin community-level treatments on elimination of adult Onchocerca volvulus when individuals receive multiple treatments per year.

A reanalysis of several published reports indicates that when community-wide biannual treatment disrupts transmission of new infection, a profound macrofilaricidal effect of ivermectin (Mectizan) occurs that is accelerated for individuals treated 4 times a year (4x/yr). The effect is particularly obvious on adult male worms and suggests that this gender is susceptible to repetitive treatment after transmission has been blocked or greatly reduced as a result of community treatment.

Bacterial infection in chronic rhinosinusitis: a controlled paired analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine if pathogenic bacteria are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: A consecutive series of adult patients with unilateral sinus disease determined by unilateral radiographic involvement or unilateral purulent secretions was microbiologically studied. Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial and fungal cultures were obtained during endoscopic sinus surgery from purulent secretions or tissue culture. Positive culture rates were compared between the diseased sinus and the contralateral nondiseased (control) sinus to determine if pathogenic bacteria were more commonly recovered from the diseased sinuses. RESULTS: Forty-nine adult patients completed the study with appropriate microbiological data. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the most commonly recovered bacteria followed by Staphylococcus aureus from the diseased side of the sinuses with similar findings for the control sinus. Bacterial species were recovered from 87.8% of the diseased side of the sinuses versus 85.7% from the control sinuses (p = 0.50). Reanalysis with coagulase-negative staphylococci considered as nonpathogen showed a 46.9 and 49.0% positive bacterial culture rate in diseased and control groups, respectively (p = 0.50). No significant difference in positive anaerobic culture rates were identified between groups (59.1% diseased versus 55.1% control, respectively, p = 0.61). Antibiotic resistance rates were no different between bacteria cultured from diseased sinuses versus control (p = 0.115). CONCLUSION: Both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial species may be recovered from both diseased and nondiseased sinuses in patients with CRS. These findings cast some doubt on the exact etiologic role of bacteria in CRS, suggesting other factors or other agents also may be responsible in CRS pathogenesis.

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

As a consequence of the development of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the late 1980s, diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy has now become an integral part of the average general surgeon's practice. Many conventional operations have been successfully adapted for the laparoscopic approach. A laparoscopic operation is unquestionably the surgical procedure of choice for gastroesophageal reflux disease and removal of the gallbladder, spleen, or adrenal gland unless specific contraindications are present. However, the value of laparoscopic techniques for other operations remains controversial within the surgical community. Laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy (LIH) is a case in point. Frequent reanalysis of the controversial procedures such as laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is especially important because videoscopic operations remain in their developmental stages and thus continue to evolve. With this in mind, the purpose of this review was to examine the current state of the art of laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy in relationship to its conventional counterparts.

Expression of decay-accelerating factor on hematopoietic progenitors and their progeny cells grown in cultures with fractionated bone marrow cells from normal individuals and patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.

Decay-accelerating factor (DAF), a complement-regulating glycoprotein, has been shown to be expressed on hematopoietic progenitors and their progeny cells in normal individuals but not on abnormal cells in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Fluorescence histograms of bone marrow cells showed the heterogeneity of DAF expression on their cell membranes, suggesting mixed hematopoietic cell populations in PNH. We have previously shown that DAF is a maturational protein expressed on normal hematopoietic cells. In order to elucidate the relationship between DAF expression and cell maturity in PNH, we fractionated bone marrow cells according to amount of DAF and cultured these cells in methylcellulose for clonal assay of erythroid burst-forming units (BFU-E) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming units (CFU-GM), followed by reanalysis of DAF expression on their progeny. The matured cells from the bursts/colonies in cultures with DAF-negative PNH marrow cells had no or little DAF, but those grown from DAF-positive PNH progenitors showed nearly as much of this factor as those grown from normal progenitors. These results clearly indicate that there are at least two distinct populations of hematopoietic progenitors with respect to the membrane expression of DAF and that abnormalities occur at the level of the stem cell in PNH.

Women's cognitive and affective health and neuropsychiatry.

Recent interest in women's health has focused on the cognitive consequences of aging and hormonal changes. Based on hypotheses about estrogenic effects in the central nervous system (CNS), large-scale clinical trials were designed to address the efficacy of hormone replacement on protection against dementia and cognitive decline. Surprisingly, an absence of risk reduction for dementia and cognitive loss was found and much reanalysis of these findings has focused on timing of hormone replacement. Here we take a broad perspective to address a fuller range of psychological health. Gender differences in other psychiatric conditions including depression and anxiety have been attributed to hormones, and the neurotransmitter systems that are implicated in affective disorders may have an impact on cognitive impairment as well. Hormonal influences on neurotrophic mechanisms, as well as neurotransmitter effects, may be responsible for a breadth of neuropsychiatric conditions, particularly in aging. This review will focus on cognition, mood and anxiety issues among women with an emphasis on changes associated with aging. We will review data on the epidemiology of these entities and examine the biological mechanisms, which may be involved, with an emphasis on those mechanisms that may contribute to the multiple aspects of neuropsychiatry and women's health.

[Unemployment and ill health--or the other way around?].

In response to a recent article in Nord Med (No 11/91) this paper raises a critique of the reanalysis of two Nordic studies on the effects of unemployment on health: The model based on varying relationships between vocational ability and job requirement does not invalidate earlier findings. However, the interpretation of measurements of health in individual based follow-up studies warrants a discussion, as well as the external validity of their findings. Unemployment has been shown to affect health related behaviour, like consultation rates, referrals, sick leave and disability pension, in well controlled studies. These effects are of importance to the individuals and the health- and social services, regardless of their relation to disease in a biomedical sense.
