Menstrual function and eating behavior in female recreational weight lifters and competitive body builders.

A group of 103 female weight lifters (WL) and 92 control (C) women answered a survey concerning eating behavior and attitudes (including the Eating Disorder Inventory) and menstrual function. The incidence of menstrual dysfunction, defined as oligomenorrhea plus amenorrhea, was significantly higher for the WL (30%) than for the C (13%) not on contraceptive pills. Only 2% of the women had amenorrhea. The incidence of dysfunction was highest for the subset of 12 WL who had competed in at least one body building competition (COMP); 86% of the COMP not on birth control pills had menstrual dysfunction (P less than 0.05). More WL than C reported missing at least one menstrual period during the last year (P = 0.06). WL scored significantly higher than C on the Drive for Thinness subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI). Fifteen percent of the WL and 9% of the C achieved the criteria on this subscale for being weight preoccupied (P greater than 0.05). Significantly more WL than C responded that they were terrified of becoming fat (WL 56%, C 38%), were obsessed with food (WL 47%, C 30%), used laxatives for weight control (WL 14%, C 1%), and claimed that they had been anorexic in the past (WL 17%, C 5%). Examination of the answers of COMP revealed several items that were significantly different from the remainder of the WL. For example, 42% used to be anorexic, 67% were terrified of becoming fat, and 50% experienced uncontrollable urges to eat.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Scientific basis and professional concept of instituting a medical program of active recreation].

Physical activity is essential to health and should be exercised in accordance with one's functional and health state. Among the most advanced forms of programmed physical activity is medically programmed active leisure (MPAL). The implementation of MPAL in practice relies on research and on scientifically based concepts and attitudes which control the selection of persons for and their inclusion in MPAL. In Croatia MPAL is a form of specific care for worker's health, which is conducted in compliance with the health care and health insurance acts.

[Risk factors present in the recreation areas of nursery schools].

In order to evaluate the playground risk factors, 45 nursery schools of a USL were investigated. The results show that the risk factors depend mostly on inadequacy of the playground equipment and of its installation and maintenance. Moreover the playground surfaces are frequently nonelastic and the first-aid kits insufficient. Pediatricians have a key position in scholastic accident prevention.

Recreational drug use among Auckland high school students.

The first large scale questionnaire survey of Auckland high school students demonstrated widespread use of alcohol, a slight drop in tobacco use relative to an earlier survey and almost one-third of the students prepared to take marihuana if the opportunity arose. The reasons given by the students for their regular use or abstention from various drugs are discussed in the context of pervasive drug use throughout New Zealand society and the drug information currently available to high school students.

[Safety provisions for recreational flying or sport with a hang-glider].

The Act. n. 106 of 25th March 1985 had defined the specifications of the particular aircraft designed for hobby or sport flying as is the hang-glider. It has also provided for the issue, within six months, of special regulations aimed at "checking the psycho-physical fitness required in handling" such aircraft in additions to the technical knowledge and the information about traffic, safety, insurance regulations relevant to the matter. However, the patent default of the legislator causes the protection of hobby and sport practice of hang-gliding to be either wholly inadequate or ruled by ambiguous regulations. If, instead, the present law in force is referred to, it is deemed that--while waiting for the regulations provided for by n. 106 Act.--the Aereo Club of Italy may define as "agonistic" the practice of "hobby or sport flight" so that the checking of the "specific" fitness required by such sport comes into operation in compliance with the State Decree of 18th February 1982.
