On 16 July 1990, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck the island of Luzon, Philippines. A case-control study was carried out to identify the risk factors for earthquake-related injuries and at the same time observations were made on the rescue efforts. Being hit by falling objects was the leading cause of injury (34%). Those injured during the tremor were more likely to have been inside buildings constructed of concrete or mixed materials (odds ratio, 2.6; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.7-4.1) and to have been on the middle floors of multistorey buildings (odds ratio, 3.4; 95% CI, 2.2-5.5). Leaving a building during the earthquake was a protective behaviour (odds ratio, 0.3; 95% CI, 0.2-0.8). Of the 235 survivors who were trapped and rescued alive from the rubble, 99% were rescued within 48 hours of the impact of the tremor. These findings should prove useful in developing seismic safety codes. People should be taught proper evasive actions to take during earthquakes, and training in basic first aid and methods of rescue should be an integral part of community preparedness programmes.
Realism introduced in several large scale surprise mock-disaster tests proved to be a real challenge to a disaster-conscious hospital staff that had previously undergone fairly extensive disaster training and testing, utilizing conventional methods. Serious weaknesses, flaws, omissions and deficiencies in disaster capability were dramatically and conclusively revealed by use of what appeared to be a "live" disaster setting with smoke, fire, explosions; adverse weather and light conditions; realistically-simulated "casualites" especially prepared not only to look but to act the part; selected harassment incidents from well-documented disasters, such as utility failures, automobile accident on the main access route, overload of telephone switchboard, and invasion of hospital and disaster site by distraught relatives and the morbidly curious.

The principal problems of the organization of surgical aid to the injured were considered from the analysis of the elimination of the consequences of large catastrophes which happened in the country in the recent years. The role and significance of rendering mutual and self-assistance are shown and methods for their study and mastering are suggested. At the stages of qualified and specialized aid priority is given to the work of medical service teams. Variants of their formation, financing, and working regimen are discussed. The author also discusses questions dealing with the organizational structures of the base medical institutions rendering qualified and specialized surgical service.

The retrospective and operative epidemiological analysis of leptospirosis morbidity on the administrative territories of the Southern Federal District during the period of 1990-2002 was carried out. The dynamics and tendencies of morbidity in individual administrative units of the region were shown. Materials on the negative influence of the emergency situation arising in the region as the result of the natural calamity in summer 2002 were presented. As shown in this work, timely decisions on the stabilization of epidemiological situation taken at the period of high flood and inundation in summer 2002 in the Southern Federal District and their efficient execution made it possible to keep the epidemiological situation in leptospirosis under control.

Flood disasters cause massive loss of human lives and immense damage to the infrastructure and economic activities, not only in Turkey but also all over the world. Governments consider several long-term and short-term precautions for flood control. The numerical simulation of dam-break problems could be accomplished with geographic information systems and innovation maps. Spread of the flood wave after a dam break can be predicted using these enabling technologies. This kind of advanced modelling technology is becoming an inevitable tool for the decision-making process. Data produced by GIS are used as initial values for FLDWAV. ArcView GIS has been used to produce a Digital Elevation Model and visualization of dam-break effects and propagation of a possible flood wave. Using GIS techniques and hydrologic modelling software, possible effects and damage of a dam-break flood have been investigated and results were simulated to show significant dam break effects on the region.
