From computer technology to information technology. Findings from a national study of nursing education.

A research survey was conducted on a stratified random sample of National League for Nursing accredited diploma, associate, baccalaureate, and master programs to determine the status of computer and information technology in nursing education. Fifty-five percent (n = 190) of the 347 selected schools responded. Compared with national statistics, all programs (diploma, associate, and higher degree) were proportionately represented. Findings indicated that schools have almost universal access to computers and educational software. However, further data analysis indicated that a majority of schools lacked a coordinated plan for technology implementation and were underfinanced for technology and related personnel. In addition, less than one third of the schools addressed nursing informatics (the information of nursing) in the curriculum and only 19 schools indicated that nursing informatics was offered as a separate course. Successful strategies for the implementation of computer and information technology are presented based on the findings.

Use of Internet resources by German medical professionals.

A survey of German medical professionals, students, and librarians was performed in 1995 to examine how they used the Internet. The great majority used e-mail, the Web, and Internet sources based in the United States. Respondents claimed various advantages from Internet use. There was a clearly expressed need for Internet courses as well as evaluation and presentation of Internet sources. A majority of respondents wanted the librarians to provide Internet related services. A follow-up survey in 1996 suggested a trend towards a more realistic view among medical Internet users that incorporated expected benefits and advantages from the Internet.

The Information Commons: a model for (physical) digital resource centers.

Since its planning, construction, and opening in 1996, the Information Commons, located in The University of Iowa's Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, has served as a common ground for self-directed learning, information research, hands-on class sessions, and multimedia development. Initiatives launched from the Information Commons not only have helped increase the visibility of Hardin Library as an environment well equipped to support traditional research and education needs, but have promoted the library as a campus leader and viable partner in planning and delivering digital technologies effectively. Ongoing initiatives have focused on better integrating the library's services and resources with the curricula and research needs of the university's health sciences units. This paper describes the facility, its programmatic elements, and its impact on education, communication, and technology trends in an academic health sciences setting. Particular attention is paid to initiatives launched during the first two years of operation. This paper also discusses plans for expansion of the facility.

Implementation of NANDA nursing diagnoses online. North American Nursing Diagnosis Association.

The authors describe the online implementation of the standardized nursing language of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) nursing diagnoses at one 250-bed community hospital located in Chicago. A brief description of NANDA nursing diagnoses is provided along with a discussion of issues regarding implementation of these nursing diagnoses in a clinical information system. This system did not support online documentation of patient problems, therefore the challenge was to add documentation of patient problems to the system's software. This article focuses on the design and implementation of the nursing diagnoses computer screens, rather than focusing on the two problems we encountered during implementation--appropriate use of nursing diagnoses and the fit of nursing diagnoses with nursing interventions. Yet, the lessons learned in designing and implementing NANDA nursing diagnoses online may help others.

Nursing Informatics in Brazil. A Brazilian experience.

Nursing Informatics in Brazil began around 1985. In 1990, the Nursing Informatics Group at the Federal University of São Paulo (NIEn/UNIFESP) was created. The first task was to prepare students and professors to use computers. Since its creation, members of NIEn/UNIFESP have been working in clinical practice, administration, education, and research areas of Nursing Informatics. Initially, the discipline was introduced in the Doctoral and Master programs. Subsequently, all specialization degrees and undergraduate programs were provided with the discipline as well. In the research area, the author explores the use of computers as a tool to support nursing research as well as the implications of computer resources in nursing practice, administration, and teaching. However, the use of the computer as an instrument to support nurses' activities in taking care of patients still needs investment. The majority of hospital information systems do not attend to the nature of nursing practice.
