Slow light and chromatic temporal dispersion in photonic crystal waveguides using femtosecond time of flight.

We report time-of-flight experiments on photonic-crystal waveguide structures using optical Kerr gating of a femtosecond white-light supercontinuum. These photonic-crystal structures, based on engineered silicon-nitride slab waveguides, possess broadband low-loss guiding properties, allowing the group velocity dispersion of optical pulses to be directly tracked as a function of wavelength. This dispersion is shown to be radically disrupted by the spectral band gaps associated with the photonic-crystal periodicity. Increased time-of-flight effects, or "slowed light," are clearly observed at the edges of band gaps in agreement with two-dimensional plane-wave theoretical models of group velocity dispersion. A universal model for slow light in such photonic crystals is proposed, which shows that slow light is controlled predominantly by the detuning from, and the size of, the photonic band gaps. Slowed light observed up to time delays of approximately 1 ps, corresponds to anomalous dispersion of approximately 3.5 ps/nm per mm of the photonic crystal structure. From the decreasing intensity of time-gated slow light as a function of time delay, we estimate the characteristic losses of modes which are guided in the spectral proximity of the photonic band gaps.

Action Spectra for Phycobiliprotein Synthesis in a Chromatically Adapting Cyanophyte, Fremyella diplosiphon.

The action spectra for phycocyanin production by the cyanophyte Fremyella diplosiphon shows maxima at 463 and 641 nm. The action spectrum for phycoerythrin production includes maxima at 387 and 550 nm. The maxima are based on a relative response rate well within the linear ascending portion of the dose response curves; the positions of the maxima are independent of the relative response rates chosen for reference over a 3-fold range although the comparative effectiveness of light at pairs of wavelengths varies with the standard used for comparison. These action spectra differ from those reported previously for Tolypothrix tenuis by Fujita and Hattori (Plant Cell Physiol. 3: 209-220) and by Diakoff and Scheibe (Plant Physiol. 51: 382-385) in that blue light strongly promotes phycobiliprotein synthesis in F. diphosiphon but has been reported to have little or no effect on T. tenuis. These data suggest that the photoreceptor or photoreceptors which regulate phycobiliprotein metabolism in F. diplosiphon may be either one or two metalloporphyrin complexes or double pigment systems consisting of a red or green light-absorbing photoreceptor which can be activated directly or by energy transferred from a blue light-absorbing receptor.

Dilead mercury chromate(VI), Pb2HgCrO6.

The structure of Pb(2)HgCrO(6) (space group P-1) can be described as consisting of isolated [CrO(4)](2-) tetrahedra and nearly linear [HgO(2)](2-) dumb-bells, which form layers of composition [HgCrO(6)](4-). These are intercalated with corrugated pseudo-hexagonal Pb(2+) layers. The Pb(2+) cation is stereochemically active and has coordination 3+5.

A new chromate of tetravalent cerium: Ce2(CrO4)4.2H2O.

Dicerium(IV) tetrachromate(VI) dihydrate, Ce2(IV)(CrO4)4.2H2O, has been prepared from an acidic aqueous solution at room temperature. Its novel crystal structure, which was solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, is built from isolated CrO4 tetrahedra and isolated Ce(O,H2O)n (n = 8 and 9) polyhedra. All atoms are in general positions. The mean Ce-O and Cr-O bond lengths are 2.358 and 1.651 A, respectively. Comparisons are drawn with the structure of Ce(IV)(CrO4)2.2H2O.

Dilead(II) trimercury(II) tetraoxide chromate(VI), Pb2(Hg3O4)(CrO4).

Pb2(Hg3O4)(CrO4) consists of [CrO4]2- tetrahedra, linear O-Hg-O dumbbells and divalent Pb atoms in [3+5]-coordination. The HgO2 dumbbells are condensed into [Hg3O4]2- units and can be regarded as a section of the HgO structure. The [Hg3O4]2- complex anions are connected by interstitial Pb2+ ions, while the [CrO4]2- tetrahedra are isolated.
