Perinatal mortality in urban slums in Lucknow.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the perinatal mortality rate (PNMR) in the urban slums of Lucknow DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Twenty five Anganwadi centres of urban Lucknow, with a population of 25,901. METHODS: Data was collected on birth and early neonatal deaths, gestational age of the neonate (determined at birth) and maternal variables like socio-economic status, maternal age, parity, and bad obstetrical history from January 1992 to March 1993. RESULTS: There were 966 births with a still-birth rate of 37.2 and PNMR of 59.0 per 1000. The relative risk of perinatal mortality with lower socio-economic status was 1.87, bad obstetrical history 2.18, and gestational age < 37 weeks 1.95. CONCLUSIONS: Further reduction in PNMR may be possible with focussed medical services to women of low socio-economic status having bad obstetrical history and those delivering before term.

Black and white population change in small American suburbs since World War II: regional differences.

"This study examines the relationship between black population concentration (% black), black population change and white population change for small American suburbs for the 1950-1980 period. Linear, tipping point (curvilinear) and interaction models of racial transition are evaluated for each decade by region (South and non-South), controlling for several other suburban characteristics (age, annexation and distance to the Central Business District) which may affect both black and white population change. The analyses show that racial transition in suburbs involves the parallel development of white and black populations with mainly weak and complex causal linkages which are sensitive to broader suburbanization patterns."

Urbanization, interregional accessibility, and the decision to migrate.

Trends in population and labor force growth in nonmetropolitan areas of the United States during the 1970s are analyzed. The authors investigate the relationships among migration behavior, urban accessibility, and externalities such as congestion that are associated with urban residence. "A model of the migration decision [is examined] that incorporates in an explicit fashion this proximity-centrality relationship. Estimates of the model are also discussed, with specific attention given to the relationship under question. In addition, the age selectivity of the relationship [is] examined. Insights on the nonmetropolitan reversal drawn from the model estimates are discussed in a third section, followed by concluding remarks."

The influence of local commuting patterns on urban settlement systems.

"A large body of empirical data on the dynamics of local travel in the USSR is surveyed to illustrate the influence of commuter movement on the formation and spatial interaction of settlement systems. Correlations are established between commuting patterns and the population levels of cities of different size categories."

A multiregional population-projection framework that incorporates both migration and residential mobility streams: application to metropolitan city-suburb redistribution.

"In this paper the author introduces a population-projection framework that incorporates interregional migration and intraregional residential mobility streams to project future population sizes both across and within regions in a manner that is consistent with existing migration theory. The author presents a general matrix model of the framework, shows how its parameters can be estimated from fixed-interval census migration data, and discusses how the framework can be employed to 'update' population projections when recent, more limited data sets become available. These features of the framework are demonstrated with intrametropolitan central-city-suburb projections for selected US Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas over the period, 1970-2020."

Development of the settlement system in the Lithuanian SSR: results, problems, and prospects.

"The authors analyze the factors, results, problems, and prospects of the development of a system of settlement in the Lithuanian SSR, a laboratory of sorts for settlement policy in the Soviet Union. Particular attention is devoted to the formation of an inter-rayon settlement system integrating urban and rural settlements. Several methodological and conceptual approaches to the study of settlement systems are examined in this context."

Rank-size distribution and primate city characteristics in India--a temporal analysis.

"This paper is an analysis of the historical change in city size distribution in India....Rank-size distribution at national level and primate city-size distribution at regional levels are examined....The paper also examines, in the Indian context, the relation between rank-size distribution and an integrated urban system, and the normative nature of the latter as a spatial organization of human society. Finally, we have made a modest attempt to locate the research on city-size distribution...."
