How to institute and develop a strategic marketing plan for your pediatric dental office.

As what may be the most important element in a successful pediatric dental practice, marketing is often misunderstood. It requires careful planning and a long-term commitment. Before implementing your marketing plan, understand the definition of marketing and what it will mean to your practice. To develop your plan, ask yourself several important questions that will help you analyze where you are now, as well as where you want to be. Then, promote your practice by incorporating 12 important qualities into your plan. The plan is the blueprint for your efforts to repeatedly, consistently, and positively communicate with your market for the long term.

The development of sport-specific planning, rehearsal, and updating of plans during defensive youth baseball game performance.

The development of planning, rehearsal, and updating of defensive baseball plans was investigated in this study. Thirty-two male shortstops (seven 8-year-olds, eight 10-year-olds, nine 12-year-olds, and eight high school youths) were trained to perform a concurrent talk-aloud procedure before a pitch was thrown to the opposing batter. Participants completed a 40-item baseball knowledge test. Players' ages were highly correlated with their baseball knowledge (omega 2 = .88). Any subsequent age differences reflect differences in players' knowledge. Shortstops ages 12 years or younger frequently did not produce: (a) advanced defensive plans, (b) active rehearsal of plans, or (c) updating of defensive plans. When the young players did produce these strategies, the quality was generally poor; High school shortstops produced all these sport-specific strategies with advanced quality. The younger players' production and quality deficits in sport-specific strategy use may be related to their lack of a highly developed knowledge representation and the types of practice and game experiences they have had playing baseball.

Developing comparative data tools: elements for success.

Planning the development of comparative data tools is very similar to planning any major project. However, it takes some preliminary work to define the data elements that will be collected in order to ensure longitudinal success of the overall project. INTELLIMED has used the elements outlined above to successfully plan and distribute comparative data products. The elements are meant to promote the development of a plan that is simple to evaluate progress against and easy to follow.

Use of general purpose mechanical computer assisted engineering software in orthopaedic surgical planning: advantages and limitations.

Two surgical plans were developed for an appropriately complex reconstructive orthopaedic surgery case. One plan was developed with customary methods using two-dimensional (2D) radiographs. The second plan was developed with general purpose mechanical computer assisted engineering (MCAE) software using x-ray computed tomography (CT) data. The limitations of each method are identified. To create a surgical plan using three-dimensional (3D) medical datasets and MCAE software, five necessary steps were identified: (a) data reduction; (b) contour extraction; (c) 3D model creation; (d) extraction of mass properties; (e) model idealization. The principal limitation of general purpose MCAE software is the lack of pre-processing modules with which to address the unique requirements of medical image datasets.

Preparing nursing students for practice: successful implementation of a clinical practicum in occupational health nursing.

1. Nursing's Agenda for Health Care Reform, The Year 2000 Health Objectives for the Nation and the Pew Health Professions Commission support the provision of primary care in the workplace. 2. The faculty in the department of nursing wanted to provide learning experiences for community health nursing students that would allow students to develop the skills of teaching, program planning, and development and assessment of exposure to environmental hazards. 3. Members of an Association of Occupational Health Nurses constituent organization were invited to participate in the planning and development of appropriate learning activities.

Developing and implementing a plan of action to improve care. The basics.

Once agencies have completed a process-of-care investigation, the next step of OBQI is the development and implementation of a plan of action to improve care. In this article, the authors share strategies for developing, implementing, and monitoring a successful plan of action and describe how pilot agencies developed their own action plan.

A non-linear goal programming approach to modeling intraregional economic development.

"This paper provides a one-period normative model that may be used as a guide or benchmark by which the economic planner may develop policies and plans for regional economic development. The model can accomodate a region that could be as large as a small country or as small as a city, provided sufficient relevant data are available." The authors outline "a procedure for modeling and solving economic planning and analysis problems with 'intergoal trade-offs' while retaining the deviational variable as a measure of satisfaction....[They present] a generalized regional polynomial goal programming model with some suggested objectives and constraints [and illustrate] the approach with a hypothetical example."

The sequential sampling of Psorophora columbiae larvae in rice fields.

Sequential sampling plans were developed for larval populations of Psorophora columbiae developing in rice fields during the growth of rice for a 2nd crop in southwestern Louisiana. Two types of plans were developed: 1) sequential counting plans to estimate the true mean of a population with a prespecified coefficient of variation and 2) sequential decision plans to assist in deciding whether the mean larval count/dip lies outside preselected upper or lower levels. The procedure by which the plans were developed consisted of: 1) conventional larval sampling by dipping along rice field levees that divided each field into pans; 2) counting the number of 2nd through 4th instar larvae observed in two dips taken at each sampling location; and 3) determination of the appropriate statistical parameters from which probability curves, number of samples required, and cumulative larval totals for specific sampling plans could be derived. Both sequential sampling plans are based upon distributions attendant to naturally occurring populations.

Sequential sampling plans for the hairy chinch bug (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae).

Two sequential sampling plans were developed to produce tools to reduce the use of pesticides for the control of the hairy chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus hirtus Montandon, on turfgrass lawns in the cool-humid region of Quebec, Canada. A first plan based on Wald's method was shown to be too conservative in a validation conducted on infested lawns. The second plan developed using Iwao's method yielded good results. The difference between the two plans may have occurred because no common k could be found for the negative binomial functions describing chinch bug distribution on lawns, thereby violating an essential assumption of Wald's approach. Application of the Iwao plan, which is based on visual sampling of 0.1-m2 quadrats, requires approximately 20 min when lawn evaluation is conducted by a single person. Estimation of the occurrence of chinch bug infestations (28% infested lawns in the regions of Montreal and Quebec cities), and results from validation of the Iwao plan on infested lawns, indicate that the error rates alpha and beta of the plan are lower than an upper limit of 0.05 and 0.14, respectively. The adequate precision and practicality of this plan suggest that it could become an essential tool for management of turfgrass lawns in regions where the hairy chinch bug completes less than two generations per growing season.

Developing an effective business plan.

The cost-consciousness of today's health care industry demands that nurses function as business people as well as care givers. One critical business skill that nurses must develop is writing effective business plans. This article describes a framework for developing successful business plans for both beginning new services and expanding current nursing programs.

Housestaff coverage in a nonteaching community hospital.

In August 1992, a project team of senior medical and administrative personnel was formed (Housestaff Coverage Project Team) at the Park Ridge Health System, Rochester, N.Y.. The team was given a mandate to address housestaff coverage, primarily from an economic standpoint. Through total quality management (TQM), the project team sought to develop a house coverage plan that was sustainable, efficient, and effective. A plan was developed that includes three layers of service. A minimum "standard hospital coverage" would be available to all physicians and their patients and cover the basic needs of admission, crisis intervention, and issues of length of stay. A complete level of service would be available under the title of "case management" and would consist of total patient management, under the direction of the attending physician, from admission through discharge. The third level of service available to both "standard" and "case managed" patients would be a "consultative service." The latter would function as a traditional in-house medical service and would bill for its services. Park Ridge Hospital believes it has developed a system of housestaff coverage that is sustainable, efficient, and effective. An evaluation mechanism, primarily addressed at length of stay, will tell if we are correct in this assumption.
