Action potential and contraction of Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap).

Observation of the action potential and contraction of the leaf of Dionaea muscipula Ellis revealed several interesting phenomena. Two successive stimuli are generally necessary to cause contraction. The first and ineffective stimulus is associated with slow depolarization. The second stimulus has much more rapid depolarization and initiates contraction.

Venus and Freud: an educational opportunity?

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the importance of genitourinary medicine as a core component for a new problem based medical undergraduate curriculum and to describe the advantages of consensus group method as a means of identifying learning objectives for an integrated course. METHODS: A group of experts in the field of sexual health was convened around the module on sexual health. It was led by a genitourinary specialist and aided by a curriculum facilitator. Group contributors represented a wide variety of disciplines and included a medical student. The group met on three occasions for 1.5 hours. RESULTS: The identified learning objectives are presented under the course themes. The values and relevance of the individual objectives are discussed with particular reference to an integrated curriculum which combines clinical and basic science in a problem based learning (PBL) format. The communication skills and attitudes necessary to take a competent sexual history are stressed. Links with other relevant modules in the PBL curriculum are described to show how the topic of sexual health develops throughout the course. Learning methods, resources and assessment procedures are also outlined. CONCLUSION: The educational potential of sexual health and behaviour as a core topic for a novel integrated course is considerable and merits a greater importance than it appears to receive in current undergraduate courses.

How different is Venus from Mars? The genetics of germ-line stem cells in Drosophila females and males.

In the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, both spermatogenesis and oogenesis rely on germ-line stem cells (GSCs). Intensive research has revealed many of the molecules and pathways that underlie GSC maintenance and differentiation in males and females. In this review, we discuss new studies that, some differences notwithstanding, highlight the similarities in the structural and molecular strategies used by the two sexes in GSC maintenance and differentiation. These include the tight control that somatic support cells exert on every aspect of GSC function and the similar molecular mechanisms for physical attachment, cell-cell signaling and gap-junction communication. Some common principles underlying GSC biology in the fly may be applied to stem cells in other organisms.

Cerulean, Venus, and VenusY67C FRET reference standards.

Förster's resonance energy transfer (FRET) can be used to study protein-protein interactions in living cells. Numerous methods to measure FRET have been devised and implemented; however, the accuracy of these methods is unknown, which makes interpretation of FRET efficiency values difficult if not impossible. This problem exists due to the lack of standards with known FRET efficiencies that can be used to validate FRET measurements. The advent of spectral variants of green fluorescent protein and easy access to cell transfection technology suggests a simple solution to this problem: the development of genetic constructs with known FRET efficiencies that can be replicated with high fidelity and freely distributed. In this study, fluorescent protein constructs with progressively larger separation distances between donors and acceptors were generated and FRET efficiencies were measured using fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy, sensitized acceptor emission, and spectral imaging. Since the results from each method were in good agreement, the FRET efficiency value of each construct could be determined with high accuracy and precision, thereby justifying their use as standards.

[Images in Venus' mirror: woman, nursing and modern times].

This paper discusses the process of nursing professional identity construction in modernity. We utilize the ideas of category gender (Lobo, 1991) and modern person (Duarte, 1986). The modernity as a historical process establishes the emergence of work as a central category in the public X private relationship. Understanding the profession as form of construction and public presentation of the modern person, we discuss the nursing professional identity process in relation to its female basis. Working on nursing ethnographic bibliography, we identify a picture that gives to the female basis of the profession the greater cause of dilemmas such as: technical competence, vocation and identity.
