[The typology of migration: developing an alternative concept].

Alternative ways to improve the definitions used in migration studies in Indonesia are explored using data from recent migration surveys carried out at Gadjah Mada University. They involve treating migration as a continuing process rather than an isolated move. "By introducing the variable of intention to remain at the destination and the length of migrants' stay in the destination, a fourfold typology of migrant type can be created: circular migrants, migrants who intend to remain circular, migrants who intend to be permanent and permanent migrants." A survey analysis of the status of influent reproductive age women in Shanghai--a survey report.

Characteristics of the female transient population of reproductive age in Shanghai, China, are assessed using data from an October 1988 survey. "Not only did this survey supply large quantities of basic data on the floating population for the Shanghai government and related departments, but [it] was also very enlightening for our research into how to make a good job of family planning administration for China's urban-rural floating population."

Judgment, 5 December 1986.

The Court reversed the decision of a lower court, which had convicted the defendant of the crime of abortion after she had an abortion outside of Spain. It rejected the lower court's conclusion that the extraterritoriality clause of the Criminal Code should be applied because 1) the defendant had committed a legal fraud in trying to avoid punishment under the abortion law by having an abortion abroad and 2) the fetus, a future Spanish national, should be protected. The Court held that the Criminal Code contains no provisions on fraud of this sort and that there is no legal basis for the attribution of nationality to a fetus. It also held that application of the extraterritoriality clause of the Criminal Code violated provisions of the Spanish Constitution.

[Is migration really a survival strategy? The case of northern Oaxacan Mixteca].

"Since the 1950s more than 15 million Mexicans predominantly from the southern states of Guerrero and Oaxaca have...migrated to the United States. The article describes the patterns of migration in a Mixteco community of Oaxaca, where 90% of the men and a growing number of women migrate once a year to the United States for illegal seasonal work. The analysis of the causes and effects of migration focuses on the non-economic aspects of this phenomenon and emphasizes the ideological and social motives for migrating, especially those related to ethnic identity and to the establishment of indigenous communities in the Mexican Nation-State." Migration within the periphery: Haitian labor in the Dominican sugar and coffee industries.

"This article presents data on the employment of Haitian labor in the sugar and coffee sectors in the Dominican economy. The Haitian cyclical pattern of migration is related to the enclave pattern of development as it has occurred in the Dominican Republic. The common features of both coffee and sugarcane production which stimulate the reliance on cheap foreign labor are discussed."
