[Photoelectron decay time-resolved spectrum of AgCl crystals doped with K4Ru(CN)6 complex].

Microwave absorption and film dielectric spectrum detection technology was used to study the influence of complex K4Ru (CN)6 on the photoelectron decay time-resolved spectrum of cubic AgCl crystals illuminated in this paper. The results indicate that the influence of the doping content and doping position of the complex K4Ru(CN)6 on the photoelectron decay time-resolved spectrum is evident. The photoelectron decay process of this emulsion is slowest, and the photoelectron lifetime is longest when doped with K4Ru (CN)6 of 2.45 x 10(-5) mol x (mol Ag)(-1) at doping positions of 75% Ag.

[The structure and properties of self-assembly complex LB films of silver nanoparticles].

The structure and properties of Ag self-assembly films have attracted much attention in the past decade, which are to a large extent influenced by the structure and properties of the nanoparticles. In the present work, the single-layer and multi-layer complex films of silver nanoparticles and their absorbates were fabricated by using self-assembly technique. The interaction of silver nanoparticle and its absorbate was studied using absorption spectroscopy and surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy. The Raman enhanced properties of silver nanoparticles, and the structure and properties of the complex films were also investigated. The experimental results indicate that the interaction of octodecyl amic (OA) and silver nanoparticle takes place via the NH2 substitute and the active site on Ag, and there might exist photocatalysis under the laser excitation. In addition, the product from otcodecyl amic and stearic acid(SA) has a weak interaction with silver nanoparticle, which mainly takes place as spatial encumbrance in the self-assembly complex film.

[Synthesis and SERS characterization of silver nanocubes].

Silver nanocubes were synthesized by reducing silver nitrate with ethylene glycol in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) based on the report by Xia's group. Silver nanocubes were immobilized on silicon wafers by self-assembly processes. SERS activity of silver nanocubes was detected by using pyridine and SCN- respectively as probe molecules. The preliminary results show that the Raman intensities of pyridine and SCN- adsorbed at silver nanocubes were enhanced considerably, indicating that silver nanocubes can be used as a good SERS substrate. On the other hand, SERS combined with the probe molecule method can be used to characterize the optical property of silver nanocubes.

[Argyria--an almost-forgotten dyschromia].

A 79-year-old woman presented with a long history of grey-blue discoloration of the light-exposed areas. Her face, forearms, and the backs of both hands were affected. The proximal parts of her fingernails were impressively discolored, but her toenails were not affected. The patient reported that she had received oral therapy with the silver-containing drug Gastrarctin in 1959. The diagnosis of argyria was confirmed by documenting high tissue levels of silver in light-exposed skin. Argyria has become uncommon as medications containing silver are no longer employed and occupational protection for those with exposure to silver salts has become more refined.

[Tests of Milkofix, a new preservative preparation for milk samples used for infrared analysis of milk components. I. Verification of its bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal effects and its interference effects].

Hygienic, ecological and health problems of sample preservation for an analysis of basic milk components make us continually to develop a safer chemical preservative substance which will preserve the original sample composition for the time required and which will not influence the analyses. Trzický (1990) proposed Milkofix (M), a preservative substance on the basis of silver compound. The author reports on minimum risks of the use of this preparation, in comparison with traditional preservatives. Preservative efficiency of Milkofix was compared with other preservatives: K2Cr2O7 (C), NaN3 (A) and bronopol (B). The following concentrations were used: A--0.0085 g NaN3 and 0.0630 g NaCl, B--0.0050 g bronopol and 0.0500 g NaCl, C--0.0330 g K2Cr2O7 and 0.0670 g KCl in tablet, M--0.1250 g of the mixture, all amounts are per 25 ml milk. The observed antibacterial efficiency of M could be seen in a slower decrease in actual acidity, and/or in an increase in titratable acidity in M-treated samples unlike untreated ones (N). From the starting value pH 6.3 (Fig. 1), the value of N treatment dropped to 3.8 after two days, the values of M and A treatments dropped to 4.9 after nine days and to 5.7 after twelve days, respectively. As for SH, the values increased within the same interval from 6.5 (2.5 mmol/l) to 28.6 in N, and to 22.3 in M and 9.4 in A (Fig. 3). There was a similar trend when the milk samples were stored at a temperature of 4 degrees C, but the differences between the preservation methods were not so clear in comparison with storage at a temperature of 20 degrees C (Figs. 1 and 3). The standardized SH value of 9.0 (2.5 mmol) for infraanalyzer measurements was exceeded after 24 hours in N samples, after four days in M samples and after 12 days in A samples at a temperature of 20 degrees C. The observation of the growth of microorganism counts (CPM) showed that this growth was slower in M than in N, but faster in the samples of C treatment (Fig. 5). The generative time of CPM in N made 1.6 hours, in M 2.4 hours and in C 7.9 hours. The lag phase of these mixed cultures was 24 hours in M, 60 hours in C and in N treatment the lag phase was zero.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

[Gingival pigmentation caused by dental amalgam. An ultrastructural study].

The aim of this investigation is the ultrastructural analysis of biopsies of human gingiva pigmented by the metallic deposits from dental amalgam. The size, the nature and the distribution of the particles are studied by light and electron microscopy and by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Fragments and particles of different size and composition are observed. No traces of mercury are detected in any examined samples. In contrast, very fine grains (0.01 to 0.05 microns in diameter) of a silver compound are observed to be preferentially bound to intracellular membranes and to extracellular structural components. Tissue modifications in the gingival epithelium as well as in the connective tissue can accompany the pigmentation phenomenon. The different metabolic pathways of the metals diffusing from the amalgams are discussed.

Solubility of silver sulfadiazine in physiological media and relevance to treatment of thermal burns with silver sulfadiazine cream.

Silver sulfadiazine cream has been a standard treatment for burns over the past two decades. Although many studies have described the phenomenon of silver absorption from burn wounds treated with silver sulfadiazine, they failed to examine the chemistry underlying the absorption process: Silver chloride was assumed to form at the burn wound and absorption of silver was believed to be negligible. Here we have developed chemical model systems to investigate the interactions of silver sulfadiazine and silver chloride in direct contact with synthetic serum electrolyte solution (SSES), with SSES plus endogenous ligands or beef blood plasma, and with human serum. The results indicate that silver absorption from an acute burn site can be significant, because human serum is capable of solubilizing silver. This finding is of concern, given the potential for silver toxicity as a direct consequence of applying silver sulfadiazine to extensive burn wounds.

Astrocytes in brain tumours. Differentiation or trapping?

Adult astrocytes have been described in several types of gliomas, being accepted as high differentiated cells. Their presence is specially important concerning the concept of undifferentiated neuroectodermal tumours (PNET). We have studied two series of brain tumors and compared and contrasted them with silver impregnation (89 cases) and GFAP (127 cases). These are our conclusions: these astrocytes show the same morphology not only in neuroectodermal tumours, but also in CNS parenchyma around meningiomas, metastasis and brain lymphomas; many of these astrocytes are mature, normal cells with involutive features, lying among tumoral cells without transitional stages; their presence is directly related to a prominent peritumoral gliosis, a high proliferation rate and an infiltrating growth. On this basis, it is suggested that most of them are astrocytes belonging to the invaded CNS tissue and not true tumoral cells.

Passage of silver ions through membrane-mimetic materials, and its relevance to treatment of burn wounds with silver sulfadiazine cream.

Treatment of acute burn wounds with silver sulfadiazine has raised concern of potential silver toxicity. As the wound heals, a barrier forms between the silver sulfadiazine and the blood, but this membrane is not impenetrable, and so silver absorption is still possible. In this work, we have modeled chemical systems to investigate the transport of silver sulfadiazine and silver chloride through cellulose, chitosan, collagen, and polyethylene membranes into the following media: synthetic serum electrolyte solution (SSES), SSES plus glutathione, and human serum, to simulate some of the chemical processes occurring at a burn wound during healing. Our results clearly indicate that membranes can retard the movement of silver ions, especially those that have silver-binding properties. This suggests that silver absorption at a healing wound will be minimized by entrapment of silver in the growing membrane network, and thus the likelihood of silver toxicity will be reduced.

[The antibacterial activity of preparations with highly dispersed iron].

High-dispersed magnetized iron preparations of various coercive force and its preparations with Ag, Au, Pt obtained by thermochemical method have been studied for their effect on plants and bacteria pathogenic for animals. It is established that magnetized iron intensifies antibacterial effect of certain metals. Of the studied preparations only high-dispersed Fe-Ag had distinctly expressed bactericidal effect. Other preparations had weak antibacterial effect or had not it at all. All the preparations have strong adsorption capacity.

[Mutagenic potential of copper compounds and modification of effects of silver iodide].

Mutagenic potential of copper compounds and its alteration in case of the interaction with silver compounds were analyzed by use of plant test systems. As test systems, Crepis capillaris L., Tradescantia clone 02, and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) were used. Mutagenic properties of copper iodide and copper sulfate were not detected. CuI, being not a mutagen by itself, remarkably enhanced mutagenic potential of AgI.

(mu-2,11-Dithia[3.3]paracyclophane-kappa2S:S')bis[(6-carboxypyridine-2-carboxylato-kappa2N,O6silver(I)]: a mixed-ligand silver-based dinuclear compound.

In the title complex, [Ag2(C7H4NO4)2(C16H16S2)], each Ag(I) atom is trigonally coordinated by one S atom of a 2,11-dithia[3.3]paracyclophane (dtpcp) ligand, and by one N and one O atom of a 6-carboxypyridine-2-carboxylate ligand. Dtpcp acts as a bidentate ligand, bridging two inversion-related AgI atoms to give a dinuclear silver(I) compound. The dinuclear moieties are interconnected via O-H...O hydrogen bonds to form a two-dimensional zigzag sheet. Two such sheets are interwoven via pi-pi interactions between pyridine rings, affording an interwoven bilayer network.
