"Whatever feels good in my soul": body ethics and aesthetics among African American and Latina women.

Ethnicity-specific differences in body aesthetic ideals and body satisfaction have been cited as a potential explanation for interethnic differences in the prevalence and presentation of eating disorders. It has been widely hypothesized that such ethnically based differences in aesthetic body ideals mitigate cultural pressures that contribute to body disparagement and disordered eating among white women. However, mechanisms by which a cultural milieu may be protective against the development of disordered eating remain poorly understood. This study investigated relationships among ethnicity, self-representation, and body aesthetic ideals among 18 college-educated black and Latina women through analysis of focus group discussion data. Rather than confirming body aesthetic ideals different from those of white culture, study respondents reframed the discussion about body aesthetics to one of body ethics. That is, study subjects both contested ideologies defining thinness and whiteness as inherently beautiful and espoused a body ethic of self-acceptance and nurturance that rejects mainstream cultural pressures to reshape bodies to approximate aesthetic ideals promulgated in the media. We conclude that understanding body image concerns from the standpoint of body ethics, rather than body aesthetics, may be a more productive and inclusive approach to the study of ethnically diverse women's embodied experience. Ultimately it is anticipated that this will better illuminate the complex relationships among ethnicity, culture, and risk for body image and eating disorders.

[When the soul shatters].

Clinically relevant psychiatric disorders are very common in palliative medicine. Depending on severity, their influence on the patient's quality of life can be very unfavorable. Because of the fact that mental disorders usually have multifactor roots, an interdisciplinary approach to diagnostic and treatment procedures is necessary. In our daily clinical work we are often far away from realizing this approach. While treating these patients, the doctor is often left alone and feels powerless. The following remarks are meant as an aid to the doctor working in the field of palliative medicine, to enable him to recognize the psychiatric disorder and treat the illness accordingly. Besides the clinically relevant psychiatric disorders, many other psychological and social problems and also spiritual aspects are to be kept in mind when caring for these chronically ill patients. Due to lack of space it will not be possible to deal with all of these important issues in this paper.

[Injury to body and soul--psychiatric consequences of road traffic accidents in children and adolescents].

Road traffic accidents are a major cause for severe injury in children and adolescents. Many victims also suffer from psychological consequences, such as posttraumatic stress disorder, traffic-related fears or mood disturbances. High levels of distress during and immediately after the accident are associated with severe posttraumatic stress symptoms. Routine consideration of the psychological impact of road traffic accidents should receive the same priority as screening for physical injury.

["Body and soul and friendships destroyed". Behavior therapy of a 14-year-old adolescent with alcohol dependence syndrome].

OBJECTIVES: About 250,000 children and adolescents in Germany are dependent upon alcohol or at severe risk of developing an alcohol disorder. Whereas adults who abuse alcohol benefit from a variety of therapy manuals and numerous institutions offering long-term disorder-specific care, the situation with regard to adolescent patients needs to be upgraded. METHODS: We present the behavioral therapy of an alcohol-dependent 14-year-old boy, focusing on a version of Petry's therapy manual for alcoholism (1996) that has been adapted for the treatment of adolescents. The efficacy of worksheets as a supplement to the usual behavior therapy, or social or family interventions in the treatment of alcohol-dependent adolescents is discussed.

Are eyes windows to a deceiver's soul? Children's use of another's eye gaze cues in a deceptive situation.

Three experiments examined 3- to 5-year-olds' use of eye gaze cues to infer truth in a deceptive situation. Children watched a video of an actor who hid a toy in 1 of 3 cups. In Experiments 1 and 2, the actor claimed ignorance about the toy's location but looked toward 1 of the cups, without (Experiment 1) and with (Experiment 2) head movement. In Experiment 3, the actor provided contradictory verbal and eye gaze clues about the location of the toy. Four- and 5-year-olds correctly used the actor's gaze cues to locate the toy, whereas 3-year-olds failed to do so. Results suggest that by 4 years of age, children begin to understand that eye gaze cues displayed by a deceiver can be informative about the true state of affairs.

Psychosocial mediation of fruit and vegetable consumption in the body and soul effectiveness trial.

In this study the authors examined psychosocial variables as mediators for fruit and vegetable (FV) intake in a clustered, randomized effectiveness trial conducted in African American churches. The study sample included 14 churches (8 intervention and 6 control) with 470 participants from the intervention churches and 285 participants from the control churches. The outcome of FV intake and the proposed mediators were measured at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. Structural equation modeling indicated that the intervention had direct effects on social support, self-efficacy, and autonomous motivation; these variables also had direct effects on FV intake. Applying the M. E. Sobel (1982) formula to test significant mediated effects, the authors confirmed that social support and self-efficacy were significant mediators but that autonomous motivation was not. Social support and self-efficacy partially mediated 20.9% of the total effect of the intervention on changes in FV intake. The results support the use of strategies to increase social support and self-efficacy in dietary intervention programs.

The apoptosome: heart and soul of the cell death machine.

Apoptosis is a fundamental biologic process by which metazoan cells orchestrate their own self-demise. Genetic analyses of the nematode C elegans identified three core components of the suicide apparatus which include CED-3, CED-4, and CED-9. An analogous set of core constituents exists in mammalian cells and includes caspase-9, Apaf-1, and bcl-2/xL, respectively. CED-3 and CED-4, along with their mammalian counterparts, function to kill cells, whereas CED-9 and its mammalian equivalents protect cells from death. These central components biochemically intermingle in a ternary complex recently dubbed the "apoptosome." The C elegans protein EGL-1 and its mammalian counterparts, pro-apoptotic members of the bcl-2 family, induce cell death by disrupting apoptosome interactions. Thus, EGL-1 may represent a primordial signal integrator for the apoptosome. Various biochemical processes including oligomerization, adenosine triphosphate ATP/dATP binding, and cytochrome c interaction play a role in regulating the ternary death complex. Recent studies suggest that cell death receptors, such as CD95, may amplify their suicide signal by activating the apoptosome. These mutual associations by core components of the suicide apparatus provide a molecular framework in which diverse death signals likely interface. Understanding the apoptosome and its cellular connections will facilitate the design of novel therapeutic strategies for cancer and other disease states in which apoptosis plays a pivotal role.
