Gastrointestinal toxicity of melos conquer mixture in rats.

GIT effects of Melos Conquer Mixture were investigated - using albino wister rats. Conquer Mixture was administered orally at different concentrations whereas the control group received water. The experiment lasted from 3 to 21 days. Pathological examination was carried out on the dead animals. The animals showed (1) loss of weight and appetite (2) weakness (3) faeces was soft (4) out of 10 animals which received 1.20 ml/kg died on day 5(5) the Glt of the dead rats was virtually empty except in the colon, (6) pieces from various parts of GIT revealed evidence of acute and sub acute inflammatory cellular reactions. The results indicate that Conquer Mixture may be toxic to the gastrointestinal tract and suggest that a re-evaluation of the therapeutic usefulness of the drug in the management of malaria is warranted.

Regional variation in the histological appearance of the small and large intestine of the rat following acute and chronic administration of Melo's Conquer Mixture.

The effect of acute and chronic administration of various doses of Melo's Conquer Mixture (MCM) on the histological appearance of the small and large intestine was investigated in albino Wistar rats. Obtained results show that at recommended therapeutic dose, MCM is able to evoke an acute inflammatory response, with infiltration of the mucosa and submucosa by neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophils. In addition, there was submucosal lymphoid follicle hyperplasia and increased mucus secreting cells. The severity of these changes were dependent more on prolonged administration than dose. These findings suggest strongly that MCM is a potential toxic agent. We therefore recommend further chemical analysis to identify the possible toxic agent(s) in this mixture.

[Geographical factors in the epidemiology of intoxication with Karwinskia (tullidora) in Mexico].

Consumption of fruits from the genus Karwinskia may cause a flaccid paralysis that can be confused with the Guillan-Barré syndrome or poliomyelitis. Paralysis resulting from consumption of such fruit has emerged as a public health problem in certain regions of Mexico. The purpose of this study was to investigate geographical factors associated with this intoxication in the 72 cases reported in Mexico from 1990 to 1994. Location of cases coincides with the distribution of the 11 reported species of Karwinskia in the country. The majority of reported cases were related to the consumption of K. humboldtiana, with a smaller number involving K. mollis, K. parvifolia, K. johnstonii, and K. rzedowskii. Most cases were located in regions with dry climates (79.2%), arid vegetation (41. 7%), and altitudes under 1,000 meters above sea level (54.1%). The study establishes three different risk areas: the Balsas river region in the southwestern central part of the country; the arid northern area; and the arid and dry central area. Cases were from rural communities with low levels of schooling and poor socioeconomic conditions.

[Light and electron microscopic study of melanosis coli].

The authors describe the results of light- and electronmicroscopic investigation of the colonic mucosa in melanosis, occurring at a 35 years old male patient. In the tunica propria mucosae pigment storage macrophages described histologically can be recognized as well by the aid of electron microscope. In contrast to the light-microscopic picture, electronmicroscopically separation of the epithelial cells of the mucosa, accumulation of foreign material in the enlarged intercellular spaces, accumulation of granular-fibrillar matrix in the tunica propria and presence of plasma cells with increased secretory activity can be revealed. It is assumed, that separation of epithelial cells of the mucosa goes with the disturbance of the absorptive function. It can not be excluded, that electronmicroscopically revealed lesions of the coolnic musoca aggravate the severe obstipation. For this reason early diagnosis of the melanosis coli and ceasing the medication with athranol-glycosida-containing laxatives are very important.

Status of certain additional over-the-counter drug category II and III active ingredients. Final rule.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a final rule stating that the stimulant laxative ingredients aloe (including aloe extract and aloe flower extract) and cascara sagrada (including casanthranol, cascara fluidextract aromatic, cascara sagrada bark, cascara sagrada extract, and cascara sagrada fluidextract) in over-the- counter (OTC) drug products are not generally recognized as safe and effective or are misbranded. This final rule is part of FDA's ongoing OTC drug product review.

Cleansing of the colon without enemas.

Several methods have been used to cleanse the large bowel prior to roentgen examination and rectoscopy for more than ten years. A method with administration of a salt solution (SALAX) in combination with different oral laxatives (Cascara sagrada, Dantron, Bisacodyl) without cleansing enemas is described. Hospitalized patients should have an individual preparation while ambulatory patients are almost completely cleansed if they carefully follow the given instructions.
