The aim of this paper is to present the structure of exocrine glands in P. glabrum, P. amphybium, P. minus, P. persicaria and P. punctatum, of them from section Persicaria, family Polygonaceae. The observations were performed with light, scanning and transmission electron microscope, using routine techniques for sample preparation. The structures observed at superficial view are composed of four cells flanking a small pore in the middle, and surrounded by a number of rather small cells, followed by normal epidermic cells. In the cross section the structure is composed of a great cavity filled with secretion, and communicated with the external side of the pore. The cavity is internally surrounded by a flat cell epithelium separated from the mesophyll by a layer of parenchymatic cells.

OBJECTIVE: To optimize the extraction process of root of Polygoni multflori and validate the interrelation between antioxdative capacity and the content of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucoside in root of P. multiflori. METHOD: The optimum extraction was abserved with the orthogonal design; 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucoside was determined by HPLC and the antioxidative capacity by using photochemiluminescence detection method with the Photochem supplied by Analytik Jena AG; the concentration of ethanol, amount of ethanol, extraction time and extraction times were the four factors in the extraction. RESULT: The concentration of ethanol and extraction times had significant effect on the content of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucoside and the antioxidative capacity of the crude extract. CONCLUSION: The best extraction process is to extract three times by using 10 fold EtOH(60%), refluxing at 85 degrees C and to extract one and half hours each time.
OBJECTIVE: To study the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Polygomun aviculane. METHOD: The chemical constituents were isolated by silica gel column chromatography and preparative silica thin layer chromatography, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of physico-chemical evidences and spectroscopic analysis (IR, MS, 1H and 13C-NMR). RESULT: Seven phenolic compounds were identified as rosmarinic acid (1), gallic acid (2), gentisic acid 5-O-(6'-O-galloyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), caffeic acid (4), p-coumaric acid (5), ethyl caffeate (6) and acteoside (7), respectively. CONCLUSION: Compounds 1, 3, 6 and 7 were isolated from this plant for the first time. These results provided theoretical evidences for the further bioactive investigation on this plant.
An improved extraction procedure resulted into a six-fold yield of bioactive fraction than the usual extraction method with a high per cent of feeding deterrence against 3rd instar larvae of Spilarctia obliqua and Spodoptera litura. The effective concentration (EC50) of PH-2 was 4321 and 4155 ppm against the two insects. No loss in feeding deterrency was recorded when the bioactive ether fraction, PH-2 was exposed to sunlight for 6 h.
