Head and neck blocks in children: an anatomical and procedural review.

Children undergo a variety of neurosurgical, otorhinolaryngology and plastic surgery procedures to the head and neck. Although opioids are utilized for pain control, they are associated with adverse side effects including postoperative nausea and vomiting, respiratory depression, somnolence and itching. The utilization of peripheral nerve blocks provides analgesia while reducing the need for opioids. This review will provide a summary of a variety of commonly used head and neck nerve blocks in children with a brief anatomical and technical summary.

Complications in endoscopic plastic surgery.

Owing to the relatively short time endoscopic-assisted plastic surgery procedures have been done, there are few published reports of complications. The experiences of the faculty from the Endoscopy in Plastic Surgery: A consensus Multidisciplinary Symposium as well as the few published reports in the literature have been reviewed. The complications associated with endoscopic techniques are similar to those with open techniques. It is clear, however, that a subset of complications specific to endoscopic procedures exists. As endoscopic techniques and instrumentation are further developed, and as surgeons move higher up on the "learning curve", these complications should be reduced.

[Keloid and hypertrophic scars].

BACKGROUND: Keloid and hypertrophic scars develop most frequently in wounds with high skin tension and especially on the upper truncus. Both are characterized by an excessive dysfunctional collagen metabolism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The article presents data from research in current literature and discuss the treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: Patients that are undergoing elective surgery should be handled with surgical techniques that reduce wound closing tension. Patients who are at high-risk or show excessive scar development should follow standard treatment. First-line therapy is silicone sheeting and/or pressure. In case of minimal response, steroid injections should be started after two months. The patient must be re-evaluated for a surgical approach combined with conservative treatment if the result is unsatisfactory after 12 months.
