Two-dimensional rhombohedral grid coordination polymers [M(bbbt)(2)(NCS)(2)](n)(M = Co, Mn, or Cd; bbbt = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl) bis-1H-benzotriazole): synthesis, crystal structures, and third-order nonlinear optical properties.

In this paper, treatment of 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl) bis-1H-benzotriazole (bbbt) and KSCN with Co(II), Mn(II), or Cd(II) afforded three two-dimensional rhombohedral grid coordination polymers [M(bbbt)(2)(NCS)(2)](n)(M = Co, 1; Mn, 2; Cd, 3). The two-dimensional rhombohedral grids are parallel to the crystallographic ac plane. The rhombohedral grid consists of 44-membered rings of M(4)(bbbt)(4), and gives the dimensions of 12.913 x 10.764 A for polymer 1, 13.106 x 10.797 A for polymer 2, and 13.256 x 10.870 A for polymer 3. The three polymers' third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were determined by Z-scan technique in DMF solution. The results show that all three polymers show very large NLO absorption and strong NLO refraction properties. The third-order NLO absorptive coefficients alpha(2) are 5.4 x 10(-9) m W(-1) for polymer 1, 5.2 x 10(-9) m W(-1) for polymer 2, and 5.0 x 10(-9) m W(-1) for polymer 3. The alpha(2) values are larger than those of all the reported cluster compounds. The NLO refractive index values n(2) of the three polymers are 5.73 x 10(-19), 3.55 x 10(-19), and 3.07 x 10(-19) m(2) W(-1), respectively. Their hyperpolarizability gamma values are calculated to be 2.40 x 10(-30) esu for polymer 1, 1.52 x 10(-30) esu for polymer 2, and 1.50 x 10(-30) esu for polymer 3. The gamma values are comparable to those of clusters and better than those of organometallic compounds, semiconductors, and fullerene.

Wavelength-dependent photofragmentation and photoionization of gaseous (eta4-cycloocta-1,5-diene)(eta5-cyclopentadienyl)cobalt.

Gas-phase photoreactions and photoproducts of the mixed-ligand compound (eta(4)-cycloocta-1,5-diene)(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)cobalt are reported. Significant amounts of the monoligated complexes CoCOD and CoCp are produced, and the relative amounts are wavelength dependent. The COD ligand (with the weakest metal-ligand bonds) is always preferentially labilized as expected, but the relative amounts of the CoCOD and CoCp fragments change by 1 order of magnitude as the excitation wavelength is changed. The gas-phase photoreactions exhibit other surprising features that are uncommon in the photoreactions of organometallic compounds in the gas phase. Significant amounts of the intact cation are formed, in contrast to most reported reactions where fragmentation of the weak metal-ligand bonds precedes ionization. Most surprisingly, fragmentation of the ligands occurs while the ligands are still coordinated. The resulting metal complexes contain ligand fragments that remain coordinated to the metal. Breaking several carbon-carbon bonds with retention of weaker metal-ligand bonds is unexpected. For example, C(5)H(5) undergoes fragmentation while still coordinated to the cobalt, yielding smaller compounds such as Co(CH)(+), Co(C(2)H(2))(+), Co(C(3)H(3))(+), and Co(C(4)H(6))(+). Correspondingly, coordinated COD yields Co(C(6)H(6))(+), Co(C(5)H(5))(+), Co(C(4)H(6))(+), Co(C(3)H(3))(+), Co(C(2)H(2))(+), and Co(CH)(+). The wavelength dependence of the ligand labilization is examined by utilizing mass-selected resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy. Both broad bands and sharp lines are observed in the mass-selected excitation spectra. The action spectra obtained in the gas phase while monitoring the cobalt ion follow the absorption onset found in solution. The changes in fragmentation pathways are interpreted in terms of the initially accessed excited state.

Mono-, di-, and trimetallic complexes of the nonalternating polycondensed pi-perimeter decacyclene, C36H18: synthesis, structure, and spectroelectrochemistry of

Reaction of the half-sandwich complexes [(eta5-Me4RC5)M(eta2:O-acac)] (M = Co, Ni; R = Me or Et) with di- and trianions of the polycondensed pi-hydrocarbon decacyclene results in formation of the first Co and Ni triple-decker complexes of this hydrocarbon. For the title compound NMR spectra as well as a crystal structure analysis reveal an antarafacial coordination of two (eta5-Me4EtC5)Co fragments at the central six-membered ring and one of the neighboring five-membered rings of decacyclene. The bridging pi-perimeter decacyclene displays a bowl-shaped topology. In the case of Ni, coordination of two (eta5-Me5C5)Ni fragments at the central six-membered ring of decacyclene is observed, based on the results of 1H and 13C NMR studies. This coordination mode is without precedent for nickel organometallic compounds reported so far. The cobalt complex shows a rich spectroelectrochemistry. Results of cyclic voltammetry and coupled ESR experiments reveal a strong interaction of both metal centers in the mixed-valent monocation of [(eta5-Me4EtC5)Co2(mu-eta5:eta4-C36H18)]. This categorizes the title compound into Robin Day class III.

Ferro- and Antiferromagnetic Exchange in Decamethylbimetallocenes.

With the aim of studying next-neighbor magnetic interactions in polymeric metallocenes the paramagnetic decamethylbimetallocenes (M'M') have been chosen as most simple model compounds. They have been synthesized for vanadium, cobalt, and nickel (to yield V'V', Co'Co', and Ni'Ni', respectively) by starting from dilithium and dithallium salts of the fulvalene dianion. The latter have been characterized by (13)C NMR spectroscopy. Decamethylbiferrocene has been synthesized as a diamagnetic standard compound, and decamethylbicobaltocenium hexafluorophosphate, as a precursor to Co'Co'. While the methylated M'M' species were stable when protected from air, the synthesis of the parent binickelocene (Ni'Ni') was accompanied by the formation of the ternickelocene NiNiNi. According to (1)H NMR spectroscopy NiNi and NiNiNi were antiferromagnetic and underwent ligand exchange to nickelocene and bisfulvalenedinickel. Unlike the usually green nickelocenes Ni'Ni' was deep red-violet owing to a new band at 528 nm. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility (chi(m)) and the magnetization established a rare example of ferromagnetic interaction within a purely organometallic compound for Co'Co'. By contrast, V'V' and Ni'Ni' were antiferromagnetic (J = -1.6 and -180 cm(-)(1), respectively, with H = -JS(A).S(B)). The (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra confirmed the expected structures of Co'Co' and Ni'Ni', while the synthesis of V'V'-d(8) and (2)H NMR spectroscopy were necessary to fully establish the vanadium compound. Temperature-dependent measurements of the (1)H NMR signal shifts and of chi(m) yielded similar J values for Ni'Ni'. MO calculations were carried out for M'M', and the results were converted into theoretical NMR spectra of the bridging fulvalene ligand depending on the spin-carrying MO. This allowed the full assignment of the NMR signals and showed that the spin is delocalized to more than one MO. The MOs were shown to have different magnetic coupling capabilities, and the different magnetic behavior of M'M' was attributed to the near-degeneracy of the magnetic orbitals.

Bridged silver(I) complexes of the polycyclic aromatic compounds tetraphenylethylene and 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene.

For the purpose of investigating the coordination behavior of the sterically congested alkenes and exploring the possibility of cofacial complexation in the polycyclic aromatic system for formation of extended polymeric networks, tetraphenylethylene (tphe) and 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene (tphb) have been studied with regard to their complexation with a silver(I) ion. The crystal structures of [Ag(tphe)(ClO4)(p-xylene)], [Ag2(tphe)(ClO4)2], [Ag4(tphe)(CF3SO3)4], [Ag2(tphb)(ClO4)2], and [Ag2(tphb)(CF3SO3)2], together with the metal-free ligands tphe and tphb, have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The pi-electron-rich cleft in organic components is found to offer a potential site for complexation, which can be utilized to generate an interesting array of organometallic compounds with one- and two-dimensional frameworks.

Homolytic cleavage and aggregation processes in cyclopentadienylchromium chemistry.

The reactivity of the cyclopentadienylchromium tricarbonyl dimer [CpCr(CO)3]2 (Cp = C5H5, 1) toward several classes of organo-P-, -S- and -N-compounds will be described. The organic substrates include the following: (i) bis(diphenylthiophosphinyl)disulfane, R2P(S)SSP(S)R2; (ii) bis(thiophosphoryl)disulfane, (RO)2P(S)SSP(S)(OR)2; (iii) tetraalkylthiuram disulfides, R2NC(S)SSC(S)NR2; (iv) tetraalkyldiphosphine disulfides, R2P(S)P(S)R2; (v) dibenzothiazolyl disulfide, (C6H4NSC)2; and (vi) Lawesson's reagent, (CH3OC6H4)2P2S4. The primary products, namely, the complexes CpCr(CO)2(SPR2), CpCr(CO)2)(S2CNR2), CpCr(CO)2(SCSN(C6H4)), and CpCr(CO)2(SPC6H4OCH3), containing the thiophosphinito, dithiocarbamate, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and dithiophosphorane ligands, respectively, arise from facile cleavage of the S-S, P-P, and P-S bonds in the organic substrates. Further treatment of these complexes with 1 under thermal activation results in cleavage of C-X (X = N, S), P-S, and Cr-E (E = C, N, P, S) bonds, accompanied by C-C and P-P bond formation in some cases, generating a variety of organometallic compounds belonging to the phosphido, phosphinidene, thiocarbenoid, dithiooxamide, aminocarbyne, aminoalkenylacyl, and cuboidal types.

Organometallic gold(III) compounds as catalysts for the addition of water and methanol to terminal alkynes.

Different inorganic and organometallic gold(III) and gold(I) complexes have been tested in the addition of water and methanol to terminal alkynes. Anionic and neutral organometallic gold(III) compounds can efficiently mediate these reactions in neutral media in refluxing methanol. The compounds are added in catalytic amounts (1.6-4.5 mol % with respect to the alkyne). Thus, compounds of the general formula Q[AuRCl(3)], Q[AuR(2)Cl(2)], [AuRCl(2)](2), and [AuR(2)Cl](2) (Q = BzPPh(3)(+), PPN: N(PPh(3))(2)(+) or N(Bu)(4)(+); R = C(6)F(5) or 2,4,6-(CH(3))(3)C(6)H(2)) seem to behave as Lewis acids in nucleophilic additions to triple bonds. Some intermediates could be detected in the stoichiometric reaction between [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)Cl](2) and phenylacetylene that was followed by variable temperature (1)H, (19)F[(1)H], COSY (19)F[(1)H]-(19)F[(1)H], and (2)H[(1)H] NMR experiments. Compound [Au(C(6)F(5))(2)Cl](2) is also able to catalyze the hydration of phenylacetylene at room temperature. A plausible mechanism for the hydration reaction has been proposed.

Effects of pi-bonding on stability and reactivity in

Recent synthetic and theoretical investigations of organometallic compounds containing the CpCr(NO) fragment have shown an interdependence of the electronic nature of ancillary ligands and the stability of a given Cr oxidation state. Understanding the correlation between ligand pi-bonding properties and the nature of the metal-based frontier orbitals permits the rationalization of observed reactivity patterns, and the identification and preparation of new classes of target molecules.

Rat chromosome 9 bears a major susceptibility locus for IgE response.

Injection of Brown Norway (BN) rats with gold salts provides a model to analyze the genetic control of the IgE response. A cohort of F2 progeny of susceptible BN and resistant LEW strains has been studied to carry out a genome-wide search for loci controlling the IgE response. Genome scanning identified two previously described loci, Atps1 and Atps2, and a new locus, Atps3. Atps1 linked to the MHC and Atps2 linked to the cytokine gene cluster that included the IL-4 region have been previously associated with serum IgE concentrations and with other Th2-dependent immune manifestations triggered by gold salts. The new interval, Atps3, identified on chromosome 9 (Lod score = 16), appears to play a major role in the control of the IgE response since it accounts for 31% of the genetic variance. Moreover, Atps3 is linked to anti-laminin antibody response and to glomerular immunoglobulin deposits. The identification and functional characterization of genes involved in these regions, particularly in Atps3, may shed light on the pathogenesis of atopic diseases in man.

Effects of gold compounds on the function of phagocytic cells. II. Inhibition of superoxide radical generation by tripeptide-activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

The effect of sodium aurothiomalate and triethylphosphine gold on the generation of superoxide radicals by chemotactic tripeptide-activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes has been investigated using a cytochrome C reduction technique. Neither gold compound inhibited the binding of the tripeptide to cells. Sodium aurothiomalate in concentrations ranging from 1 to 100 micrograms/ml produced mild, nonsignificant inhibition of the generation of superoxide radicals. In contrast, triethylphosphine gold at a concentration of 0.25 microgram/ml was associated with a mild enhancement of superoxide radical production, but the enhancement was not statistically significant. At concentrations of 1.25 micrograms/ml and above, there was a profound inhibition of superoxide radical production by these activated cells. Since the products of the respiratory burst, including superoxide, are thought to be inflammatory mediators, it is postulated that the inhibition of superoxide radical generation by gold compounds may be another mechanism by which the compounds modulate their antiinflammatory effects in patients with rheumatoid disease.

Effect of the thiol group on experimental gold-induced autoimmunity.

Brown Norway rats injected with aurothiopropanolsulfonate sodium salt develop systemic autoimmunity. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the sulfur-containing group in this experimental model of gold-induced autoimmunity. It was shown that the sulfur-containing group does not induce autoimmunity of itself, but potentiates the immunotoxic effects of gold.
