[Outbreak of hemorrhagic fever with kidney syndrome in Egor'ev district of Moscow region].

Epizootological, serological, and molecular virological analysis of an outbreak of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in the Egoryevsk district of Moscow region (September 1995-January 1996) has been carried out. Hantavirus (Puumala) antigen and virus-specific antibodies were isolated from bank voles captured in the endemic focus. Anti-Puumala antibodies were detected in the sera of all HFRS patients and in 2% healthy residents of the endemic focus. Analysis of nucleotide sequence (RNA from hantavirus-positive lung of a bank vole) showed that the studied hantavirus is a distinct genotype of Puumala virus. Hence, a new highly active natural focus of HFRS associated with Puumala virus, dangerous for the population, has been revealed in Moscow region.

[The possible role of genetic factors in the cholesterol high density lipoprotein level in the Moscow population].

The study was aimed at clarifying the relative roles of genetic and environmental factors in determination of the blood concentration of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the Russian population. For this purpose, some polymorphic systems of the apolipoproteins B, CII, and CIII; cholesterol ether transport protein (CETP); and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) genes were compared in two groups of males living in Moscow who had high and low blood HDL-C concentrations (less than 40 and more than 50 mg/dl, respectively). No statistically significant differences were found between distributions of the allelic variants of the genes studied in males with different blood HDL-C concentrations. Thus, the given panel of proteins connected with the metabolism of blood plasma lipids has no effect on the blood HDL-C concentration in Russian males from the Moscow population.

[The dynamic nature of the nutrition of the population of 1 of the districts of Moscow over a 10-year period].

On the basis of three-multiple research of character of a feed of the inhabitants of one of Moscow district by the standardized method of the 24-th hour interrogation reveals significant changes in structure of a feed of the population from 1986 to 1996. The shifts have appeared more dynamical in the second five-year from 1991 to 1996. Nevertheless, atherogenicity of ration of a researched population with superfluous consumption of the saturated fats and simple carbohydrates remains. Is established, in a feed of the women there were large shifts, than at the men. The structure of a feed of the inhabitants of Moscow differed from structure of a feed of the inhabitants of Russia.

[Seventy years of the Department of Cytology and Histology, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University].

Histology, which is inseparable from cytology as a scientific discipline, has been taught at the University of Moscow for more than 130 years. In the second half of the XIX century, this discipline made a revolutionary impact on physiology and medicine in European science. The first Department (Chair) of Histology and Embryology was established at the Moscow Imperial University in 1869 at the Faculty of Medicine under Prof. A.I. Babukhin, the famous founder of Russian histology. Several outstanding scientists, such as I.F. Ognev, A.G. Gurvich, B.I. Lavrent'ev, and others, graduated from that Department.

[Results of radiation monitoring in Moscow].

The results of assessing the radiation situation due to global fallouts, obtained from measurement of 137Cs and 90Sr in over 400 samples from natural environmental objects in Moscow in 1979-1999 have indicated that the levels of the substances in the atmospheric fallouts are in agreement with the mean Russian levels and the mean annual activity of these radionuclides in the ambient air are 6 orders lower than the allowable values laid down in NRB-99. In Moscow, the mean effective dose of external exposure to natural and cosmogenic radionuclides is no greater than 1 m3v a year. The individual effective doses of internal and external exposures of the population to global fallouts averages 13 mu k3v a year.

[A study of the intake of zinc, copper and selenium by Moscow preschool children].

The paper presents the results of comprehensive study of the provision of Moscow preschool age children with zinc, copper, and selenium, which involved assessment of their dietary intake of these substances, analysis of the provision with these trace elements by using non-invasive biochemical studies, and examination of the children's physical development and morbidity. Comparison of the data on the levels of zinc, copper, and selenium in the hair, nail, and saliva with scanty data available in the literature leads to the conclusion that Moscow preschool children show subnormal provision with these trace elements, which is not accompanied by clinical symptoms of their deficiency.

[Characteristics of patients with arterial hypertension in Moscow (as exemplified by a municipal cardiological center)].

AIM: To characterize hypertensive patients, residents of Moscow, treated at Moscow Municipal Cardiological Center (MMCC) in 1999. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1056 case histories of patients with the diagnosis of arterial hypertension or essential hypertension, directed to MMCC in 1999, were analyzed. The files were processed using specially developed standard methods. RESULTS: Patients with stage III essential hypertension aged over 60 years are most often treated at MMCC. Patients with more severe left-ventricular hypertrophy more often have cardiovascular complications. CONCLUSION: High incidence of cardiovascular complications indicates that the treatment of patients in an outpatient setting is poor.

[Frequencies of the CCR2-64I and SDF1-3'A alleles associated with progression of the HIV-1 disease in healthy individuals from Moscow].

The frequencies of two mutations associated with the development of clinical symptoms upon infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) were determined in a cohort of individuals from Moscow. Allelic frequency of the first mutation, CCR2-64I, causing the substitution of valine with isoleucine in the CCR2 chemokine receptor, was 0.1106 (95% confidence interval, 0.0714-0.1498). The frequency of the second mutation the G to A substitution in the 3'-untranslated region of the stromal-derived factor 1 encoding gene, SDF1-3'A, was 0.2125 (95% confidential interval, 0.1608-0.2642). Both values were slightly higher than those obtained earlier for Western European countries. This result can be explained by higher proportion of Asian immigrants, characterized by higher frequencies of these mutations, in the population of Moscow.

[Prevalence of joint hypermobility among an adult population in Moscow].

AIM: To elucidate joint hypermotility (JHM) among adult population of Moscow by age and sex. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Health survey covered 572 examinees (266 females and 306 males) in four age groups (16-20, 21-30, 31-40 and 41-50 years). JHM was assessed by Baton's scale. RESULTS: Prevalence of JHM in Moscow was similar to that in Europe. JHM occurred more frequently at young age and in women. The score 4-6 by Baton in Russian population (50% of 16-30-year-old women and 58% of 16-20-year-old males) is a variant of normal standard.

[Evaluation of the usefulness of three collections of bacteriophages for typing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, isolated in Moscow hospitals].

The typing of S. aureus methicillin-resistant strains, isolated in different hospitals of Moscow; was carried out with the use of three collections of phages: the International Set of Phages; the set of phages of the International Center of S. aureus phage typing in London (L); and the experimental collection of phages of the Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow (M). In this study made with the use of both the phages of the International Diagnostic Set and phages L in the standard typing dose of 1 TP about 6% of the cultures under study proved to be sensitive. When the typing dose was increased to 100 TP the phages of the international diagnostic set lyzed 75.5% of the cultures. The typed strains were found to belong to phage types 77 (71.7%), 77/84/85 (19.6%) and 94/96 (6.5%). At a concentration of 100 TP phages L lyzed 83.7% of the cultures, but the dominating phage types could not be determined due to a great variety of phage markers. In contrast to the two preceding collections, the third phage collection M was composed in such a way that in the study of the investigated culture the specificity of its restriction modification was primarily evaluated and only then the presence of antiphage immunity was determined. This latter collection was used in the evaluation of 93.1% of the cultures. By the specificity of their restriction specification system the majority of them were classified with two new groups, heretofore not described. Only this collection M made it possible to differentiate epidemic and sporadic strains and to evaluate the epidemic situation in all 6 hospitals.

[Multiyear monitoring of the ecological status of industrial zones of Moscow using a test line of Drosophila melanogaster].

For 12 years, recombination rate was assessed in Drosophila melanogaster males exposed on a thermoelectric power station (TPS) of Moscow. In 1994, experiments were also carried out on another Moscow TPS for comparison. The recombination frequency in exposed males was two- or threefold higher than in the control sample. Recombination frequencies observed in different years did not significantly differ from each other. Likewise, no significant difference was observed for the results obtained on two TPSs. A dramatic increase in recombination frequency in flies exposed on TPS was considered as an adequate response to high concentrations of effective mutagens discharged by TPS.

[The cytogenetic damage, radiosensitivity and adaptive response in children living in the different districts of Moscow].

The spontaneous level of blood lymphocytes with micronuclei (MN), the sensitivity to 1.0 Gy irradiation and adaptive response (AR) after adaptive irradiation with a dose of 0.05 Gy 5 hr later have been studied in children population living in different districts of Moscow. It was shown that spontaneous frequency of cells with MN, the sensitivity to 1.0 Gy acute irradiation and the AR manifestation have significant differences in samples taken from children living in different districts. The individual variability is significant also. In each group of children the individuals with the enhanced radiosensitivity after adaptive irradiation have been observed. In conformance with the data of radioecological inspection the radiation situation in different Moscow districts is quite safe on overage but in some districts the spontaneous level of lymphocytes with MN, and radiosensitivity after 0.05 Gy irradiation were enhanced, the AR was not found.

[Moscow schoolchildren's physical development: state-of-the-art and evaluation techniques].

The paper compares the data on schoolchildren's physical development, by using three different rating tables (centile Russian and foreign tables) and calculating the Z score. It also gives data of comparison of the anthropometric indices obtained with these tables, as well as a correlation between the results obtained by applying these methods. In addition, anthropometric indices (body weight, height, physical development harmonicity) were studied in 1st- and 5th-form pupils from Moscow general educational schools. The basic trends of the schoolchildren's physical development in the past 10 years are analyzed. The findings indicate the positive changes in Moscow schoolchildren's physical development, which are characterized by an increase in the number of children with a normal body weight, by a relative decrease in that of children with low body weight, and by a rise in the proportion of tall children.

[Comparison between seasonal changes in lipid indicators in patients with post-infarction cardiosclerosis and arterial hypertension in Ashkhabad and Moscow].

The study was undertaken to examine 190 males, aged 30-60 years who were divided into 4 groups: (1) patients with essential hypertension; (2) those with postinfarction cardiosclerosis; (3) those with postinfarction cardiosclerosis and essential hypertension; (4) healthy individuals. The levels of apolipoproteins B and A1 and circulating immune complex cholesterol were examined in the cold (winter) and hot (summer) seasons in the areas of arid (Ashkhabad) and temperate (Moscow) climate. The major apo-proteins were determined by enzyme uncompetitive immunoassay. Cholesterol levels in the immune complexes were measured by the method developed at the Institute of Experimental Cardiology, All-Union Cardiology Research Center, USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. The Moscow examinees were found to have more profound changes in the lipid spectrum than the Ashkhabad ones. In both climatic zones, the level of the major apo-proteins and their ratio were unaffected by seasonal variations.
