Morphological development and fate of the mouse mesonephros.

A study has been made of the development of mesonephric tubules in the mouse to investigate the possible transdifferentiation of tubule epithelial cell to gonadal somatic cells and/or adrenal cortical cells. Immunohistochemical localisation of laminin was carried out to study the development of basal laminae. Cells at the ventral aspect of mesonephric tubules did not show an epithelial phenotype during the period of somatic cell population of the gonadal blastema; a basal lamina appeared ventrally only after this period. Therefore, it is not necessary to postulate transdifferentiation of these cells.

[Study of the glycoconjugates in the mesonephros of the chick embryo using peroxidase-conjugated lectin].

The distribution of the sugar residues in glycoconjugates along the mesonephric nephron of chick embryo from the 4th day of incubation till hatching has been investigated, by means of six different horseradish peroxidase-labelled lectins. ConA and WGA showed an ubiquitous presence of alpha-D-mannose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine along the nephrons. SBA was found to be a specific marker of the proximal tubule. PNA and LTA reacted only for a short time at some sites during the considered period of incubation. Sialic acid was detected at the glomerulus in the podocytes, capillary wall and, with a lesser extent, in the mesangial cells. Significant changes of the glycosylation pattern of the glycoconjugates during the period of mesonephric activity and the period of involution were seen.

[Immunohistochemistry of the human fetal mesonephros with anti-human N-myc protein antibody].

Expression of a N-myc gene has been found in Wilms' tumor. N-myc protein, which is a N-myc gene product, can be detected using an anti-N-myc antibody. Paraffin sections of the fetal tissues at the seventh week of gestation were prepared for immunohistochemistry, stained by PAP method. The N-myc gene product was observed in the cells consisting of the mesonephric ductular wall. This result may suggest that Wilms' tumor is originated from the mesonephric tissue.
