[Influence of needling at yin-yang meridian points on cerebral glucose metabolism].

OBJECTIVE: To study the different effect of needling at different meridian points (MP) on different cerebral functional regions by using positron emission tomography and cerebral function tracer 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose to observe the effect of electro-acupuncture (EA) stimulation at Yin MP or Yang MP on local cerebral glucose metabolism in 30 healthy volunteers. METHODS: The thirty subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups, the 12 subjects in the Yang MP group treated by needling at Hegu (LI4), Quchi (LI11), Zusanli (St36) and Shangjuxu (St37), the 18 subjects in the Yin MP group treated by needling at Neiguan (Pc6), Chize (Lu5), Sanyinjiao (Sp6) and Yinlingquan (Sp9). All the needling was conducted at one side of body. RESULTS: After needling at Yang MP, the cerebral glucose metabolism was elevated in bilateral cross region of frontal lobe and temporal lobe, parietal lobe, thalamus and basal ganglia, and in contralateral cerebellum and hippocampus. After needling at Yin MP, the cerebral glucose metabolism was lowered in bilateral cross region of frontal and temporal lobe, contralateral temporal lobe, cerebellum and thalamus, and was elevated in homolateral hippocampus and caudate nucleus. CONCLUSION: Under physiological condition, the regulatory effects of acupuncture on central nervous system would be different when needling at different MP.

[Observation on the functional characteristics of cortical somatosensory area during the advance of the propagated sensation along meridians].

It is still not clear what role is played by cortical somatosensory system during the advance of propagated sensation along meridians (PSM). In this paper the short-latent somatosensory evoked potential (SLSEP) was taken as an indication to observe the characteristics of functional activity in cortical somatosensory area I (SI) during the advance of PSM. The observation was preformed on 10 subjects with marked PSM, which were clear and kept stable. Sixteen subjects without SPM were taken as control. Electrical stimulation was delivered to the acupoint Jiaxi (GB43) or Hegu (LI4). The SLSEP were recorded simultaneously from 3 scalp points corresponding to the representative areas of foot, arm and face contralateral to the stimulated side. The results are shown as follows. When Jiaxi was stimulated, the amplitudes of SLSEP component C2 (P45-N55) from above three scalp points in subjects without PSC were 0.85 +/- 0.17, 0.51 +/- 0.11 and 0.31 +/- 0.07 microv respectively. The amplitude was largest in the foot representative area, but attenuated successively in arm and face areas and a stair-shaped distribution was thus formed. During stimulating the acupoint Hegu (LI4) the amplitude of SLSEP component C2 (P25-N55) from the representative area of arm in subjects without PSM was larger than that from the representative areas of foot and face, and a distribution with high-medium and low-bilateral character was shaped. However, no matter whether stimulating Jiaxi or Hegu the amplitude of SLSEP C2 in subjects with marked PSM was nearly the same from three scalp points.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[The influence of pressing the meridian course on electroretinogram during acupuncture].

Observation was performed on 23 subjects with marked propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and 30 without PSM. The electroretinogram (ERG) was recorded with surface electrode and added by an averager. The b wave of ERG evoked by flash stimulation was positive with a latent period about 60 ms and amplitude of 22 +/- 1.66 muv (n = 53). There were 2 types of ERG response during puncturing Hegu (LI 4). The amplitude of ERG b wave increased in 33 subjects and decreased in 20 subjects. However, the acupuncture effect was kept relatively stable in each subject. The spontaneous variation of ERG amplitude was about 10%. In contrast, it changed by 26.5 +/- 2.43% (n = 20) when Hegu (LI 4) was acupunctured alone. It is particularly to be noted that the amplitude of b wave almost remained unchanged, with in the range of 10.08 +/- 2.42% (n = 20), as the pressure was applied on Shousanli (LI 10) during acupuncture, no matter whether the subjects with or without PSM. However, the variation rate of b wave increased by 24.83 +/- 3.74% (n = 15) once again, if the pressure was applied on both side of Shousanli (LI 10), it was nearly equal to the value caused by acupuncture Hegu (LI 4) alone. The contrast between the two is striking. The result revealed again that there may be a certain substantial process advancing along the channel during acupuncture. It is the blockade of this process by mechanical pressure which leads to the decrease of the acupuncture effect.

[Observation on the relation between propagated sensation along meridians and the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on myopia of youngsters].

Nine hundred and ninety two eyes suffering from various degrees of myopia in 536 youngsters were treated with acupuncture. A method of exciting propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and making it travel toward the affected region was employed in treatment. Bilateral Hegu (LI4) and Taichong (LR3); and bilateral Waiguan (ST5) and Guangming (GB37) were punctured on alternate days. The results showed that after 1-3 periods of treatment, the vision of 868 eyes (87.5%) were improved in various extent. Among them, the vision completely recovered in 131 eyes (13.31%), and the diopter decreased-0.75 to -1.00 D.S. in 13 eyes after acupuncture treatment. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture seemed to be considerably satisfactory and stable in two years following up. The extent of distinctness of PSM raised markedly with the increase of times of acupuncture. There was a close relation between the extent of distinctness of PSM and effectiveness of acupuncture. The more striking the centripetal PSM, the better was therapeutic effect of acupuncture. The excellent effect was always achieved when PSM arrived at the affected eye. Since PSM arrived at a large number of eyes in the subjects in younger year and so the better therapeutic effect was also achieved.

[Observation on the phenomenon of propagated sensation along meridians in youngsters].

That the opinion on the relation between the propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and the age of the subjects was divergent in the results reported by some authors. In the last 10 years, we have performed a systematic investigation on PSM on a group of 536 youngsters. The main characteristics of PSM in youngsters were just the same as that of adults. However, the incidence of PSM in youngsters, particularly the degree of distinctness of PSM, was by far higher than that of adults. The results were stable and could be repeated in the experiments performed in different years. It showed that there was surely a close relation between the degree of distinctness of PSM and the age of subjects. This fact can not be appropriately explained at present. However, it provides an important clue to clarify the factors which influence the appearance of PSM, and in turn to promote the improvement of the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and cilacriation of the mechanism underlying the formation of PSM.

Very new waves in very old meridians: quantum medical physics of the living.

In 1982, Prof. Sik'Ko and co-workers found that human beings have energetic channels where a circulation of coherent millmeter microwaves takes place. Each individual has frequencies specific to the individual (Eigenfrequencies) situated between 40 and 70 GHz. Administration of coherent microwaves of frequencies on biologically active points of the channels (at the acupuncture points of the meridians) restores normal function and health by creating maximal vasodilation, restoration of immunologic parameters and balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis. A large amount of diseases can be treated, even preventively. As the intensities of these microwaves become very low and approach the quantum level, side effects are rare and contra-indications are very few. Coherent microwaves reflect at extremities, creating microsystems of holographic projections. Contrary to this, exposure to high intensity microwaves is potentially very harmful. Therefore, it is necessary for humans to take precautions and protect themselves accordingly.

Improvement in variability of the horizontal meridian of the primary visual area following high-resolution spatial normalization.

We investigated the decrease in intersubject functional variability in the horizontal meridian (HM) of the primary visual area (V1) before and after individual anatomical variability was significantly reduced using a high-resolution spatial normalization (HRSN) method. The analyzed dataset consisted of 10 normal, right-handed volunteers who had undergone both an O-15 PET study, which localized retinotopic visual area (V1), and a high-resolution anatomical MRI. Individual occipital lobes were manually segmented from anatomical images and transformed into a common space using an in-house high-resolution regional spatial normalization method called OSN. Individual anatomical and functional variability was quantified before and after HRSN processing. The reduction of individual anatomical variability was judged by the reduction in gray matter (GM) mismatch and by the improvement in overlap frequency between individual calcarine sulci. The reduction in intersubject functional variability of HM was determined by measurements of the overlap frequency between individual HM areas and by improvement in intersubject Z-score maps. The HRSN processing significantly reduced the individual anatomical variability: GM mismatch was reduced by a factor of two and the mean calcarine sulcus overlap frequency was improved from 37 to 68%. The reduction in functional variability was more subtle. However, both HM mean overlap (increased from 18 to 28%) and the average Z-score (increased from 2.2 to 2.55) were significantly improved. Although, functional registration was significantly improved by matching sulci, there was still residual variability. This is believed to be the variability of individual areas within the calcarine sulcus, and cannot be resolved by sulcal match. Thus, the proposed methodology provides an efficient, unbiased, and automated way to study structure-functional relationship in human brain.

Evaluation of a meridian-based intervention, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), for reducing specific phobias of small animals.

This study explored whether a meridian-based procedure, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), can reduce specific phobias of small animals under laboratory-controlled conditions. Randomly assigned participants were treated individually for 30 min with EFT (n = 18) or a comparison condition, diaphragmatic breathing (DB) (n = 17). ANOVAS revealed that EFT produced significantly greater improvement than did DB behaviorally and on three self-report measures, but not on pulse rate. The greater improvement for EFT was maintained, and possibly enhanced, at six- to nine-months follow-up on the behavioral measure. These findings suggest that a single treatment session using EFT to reduce specific phobias can produce valid behavioral and subjective effects. Some limitations of the study also are noted and clarifying research suggested.

Objects do not aid inhibition of return in crossing the vertical meridian.

Location-based cuing experiments have shown that inhibition of return (IOR) spreads beyond a cued location but appears to be confined to the cued hemifield by the vertical meridian. Previous studies have also shown that IOR can spread across objects and here we investigate whether an object can be used to mediate the spreading of IOR into the opposite hemifield. Two experiments used a rectangular object that surrounded four target locations, two to the left and right of a central fixation point. The spreading of IOR in the presence of the object was determined and compared with a condition where the object-frame was absent. Object-present and object-absent trials were either mixed within a block (Experiment 1) or divided into separate blocks (Experiment 2). Both experiments revealed robust inhibition in the cued but not the uncued hemifield, further demonstrating the hemifield-based spreading of IOR.

Spatial summation across the vertical meridian in hemianopics: a test of blindsight.

Twenty hemianopic patients with retrochiasmatic lesions have been tested for spatial summation of pairs of flashes simultaneously presented either to the same hemifield or to opposite hemifields across the vertical meridian. In such a task normal subjects show summation, i.e. a faster reaction time in response to a pair of stimuli than in response to a single stimulus. Such an effect is present both for pairs of stimuli presented within the same hemifield and for pairs of stimuli in which the two flashes are presented one in the right and the other in the left hemifield. In contrast to normals, hemianopics as a group did not show interfield summation although, like normals, showed summation within one hemifield. A single-case analysis, however, revealed that in one patient there was a reliable overall interfield summation and that in three others there was evidence of summation in at least one testing session. The presence of interfield spatial summation between the normal and the affected hemifield of hemianopics thus provides further evidence of blindsight in a task paradigm in which guessing strategies and stimulus artefacts can be eliminated. The very small proportion of patients showing blindsight can be in part related to the relatively low stimulus intensity and the very brief stimulus exposure duration used.

Functional dissociation of the hemispheres in the discrimination of complex gratings near the vertical meridian.

It was previously shown that the discrimination of complex gratings differing in the spatial phase of their harmonic components is performed more accurately when the stimuli are presented in the left than in the right visual hemifield, provided that the stimuli are separated at least 2 deg from the vertical meridian (VM) and/or their spatial frequency exceeds 2 c/deg. Here we report measurements of reaction times (RT) for the discrimination of complex gratings presented laterally at various distances from the VM. The (choice) RTs are found to be longer in the right than in the left hemifield even for stimuli of low spatial frequency at 1 deg from the VM. This rules out the possibility that a naso-temporal overlap in the retino-cortical projection in man is exploited in "bridging the gap" between the two hemispheres in the discrimination of complex gratings.

Corneal astigmatism after cataract surgery with 4.1 mm BENT scleral and 4.1 mm plus meridian corneal incisions.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the 4.1 mm BENT (between 9 and 12 o'clock) scleral incision or the 4.1 mm plus meridian corneal incision (PMCI) is better at minimizing postoperative astigmatism. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Kobe City General Hospital, Kobe, Japan. METHODS: This prospective study comprised 58 eyes of 29 consecutive patients with bilateral cataract. One eye was randomly assigned to have cataract surgery with a 4.1 mm BENT scleral incision and the other eye, with a 4.1 mm PMCI. Corneal astigmatism was measured before surgery and 1, 3, 10, 30, and 100 days after surgery. RESULTS: Mean astigmatism preoperatively and on postoperative days 1, 3, 10, 30, and 100 in the BENT scleral incision group was 0.99 +/- 0.66, 1.53 +/- 1.11, 1.12 +/- 0.72, 1.26 +/- 0.81, 1.16 +/- 0.73, and 1.09 +/- 0.64 diopters (D), respectively. Means in the PMCI group were 1.14 +/- 0.79, 1.38 +/- 0.98, 1.17 +/- 0.88, 1.31 +/- 0.77, 1.01 +/- 0.70, and 1.00 +/- 0.60 D. respectively. Astigmatism on days 1 and 10 postoperatively was significantly greater than preoperatively in the BENT group (P < .03) but not in the PMCI group. The changes in astigmatism were less in the PMCI group at every examination and were significantly different 30 days postoperatively (P < .05). The negative correlation between preoperative astigmatism and the final postoperative change was significant in both groups (P < .032); the value of x-intercept of the regression line was 1.37 D in the BENT scleral incision group and 0.82 D in the PMCI group. CONCLUSION: In cataract surgery using a 4.1 mm incision, the PMCI surpassed the BENT scleral incision in minimizing postoperative corneal astigmatism.

Evaluation of Meridian ImmunoCard Mycoplasma test for the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae-specific IgM in paediatric patients.

The Meridian ImmunoCard Mycoplasma kit, a 10-min card-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) designed to detect immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to Mycoplasma pneumoniae was evaluated. We compared the ImmunoCard with the Fujirebio Serodia Myco II particle agglutination test, as well as with the complement fixation (CF) test to detect M. pneumoniae antibodies in paediatric patients. The ImmunoCard test and Serodia Myco II test agreed in 93.95%, and ImmunoCard test and CF test agreed in 83.51% of the 182 specimens tested. Nine specimens gave negative particle agglutination titres in the acute phase sample, and 28 specimens gave negative CF titres in the acute phase sample, although in the ImmunoCard test they were positive. These results may indicate that the ImmunoCard assay detects lower IgM levels of antibodies than the Serodia Myco II and CF test. The ImmunoCard appears to be a good screening assay test for M. pneumoniae IgM in children in whom M. pneumoniae IgM is found frequently.

Blindsight in hemispherectomized patients as revealed by spatial summation across the vertical meridian.

The present study provides a demonstration of blindsight in two hemispherectomy patients who showed a visual spatial summation effect across the vertical meridian despite their lack of visual awareness in one hemifield. Such an effect cannot be related to light diffusion onto the sighted hemifield because it was not present when one of the stimuli fell into the retinal blind spot of control subjects. We conclude that blindsight phenomena of the simple type described in the present study can be subserved by sub-cortical mechanisms and do not necessarily require cortical processing.

Oblique central refraction in spherocylindrical lenses tilted around an off-axis meridian.

Thin lens equations accurate to third order are presented for the effective spherocylindrical parameters for oblique central refraction through spherocylindrical lenses that are tilted around an off-axis meridian. This situation occurs in either pantoscopic or faceform tilt for spectacle corrections for oblique astigmats. The thin lens equations appear to be good approximations for oblique central refraction through actual spectacle lenses.

Tri-meridional analysis using arbitrary meridians: a new solution.

A new solution is presented for the evaluation of the spherocylindrical components of curvature or refraction from measurements taken along three distinct, arbitrary, meridians. Unlike previous approaches, the axis direction is found first, thereby making sphere and cylinder evaluation relatively simple. The derivation of the solution is reasonably uncomplicated using straightforward trigonometrical operations.
