An age and parity dependent model for birth intervals of non-contraceptive population.

"In this paper [an] age dependent model [for estimating birth intervals] is constructed which assumes that the women have already crossed the age of maximum fertility at the time of observation. The parameters of the model are assumed to depend upon the parity." This model is based on an earlier age-dependent model by the same authors and was designed to account for late marriage and high parity. The model was applied to information on 203 married, non-contracepting women from a village in Haryana, India, collected in May and June of 1978. (SUMMARY IN FRE AND ITA)

[Non-Dutch nationals in the Netherlands on January 1, 1993].

Trends in population size and growth and marriage patterns among non-Dutch residents of the Netherlands are analyzed and compared. "On 1 January 1993, 757 thousand non-Dutch nationals lived in the Netherlands, i.e., 5.0% of the total population. These figures only relate to people...who do not possess the Dutch nationality, thus excluding Dutch citizens born elsewhere. The largest category of non-Dutch nationals...was Turkish (212 thousand), followed by the 11 EC-nationalities together (183 thousand) and the Moroccans (165 thousand). These three groups accounted for over 75% of the total number of non-Dutch nationals. In 1992 the number of non-Dutch nationals in the Netherlands grew by 25 thousand, i.e., 3.3%. This is clearly lower than in 1991...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

This Act amends the Civil Code of Saint Lucia to do the following, among other things: 1) allow marriage to be celebrated by giving notice; 2) legalize divorce; 3) allow all children to be legitimated by the subsequent marriage of their parents; 4) remove differences in the treatment of children born within marriage and those born outside of marriage; 5) lower to 18 the age of majority and the age under which consent must be obtained in order to marry. A number of these changes are consolidations of earlier amendments made to the Civil Code.

Yamunabai v. Anantrao, 27 January 1988.

The appellant sought an order of maintenance to be made against the respondent under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, of India which authorizes such an order for a wife who is unable to maintain herself. She had been married under Hindu rites to the respondent while a previous wife was still living. The Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision refusing to make the order. It held that, because the respondent already had a wife, his marriage to the appellant was void from the beginning, rather than voidable, and, thus, she had never been his "wife." It rejected an argument that the appellant should be considered a wife under the Civil Procedure Code because her marriage would have been recognized under Hindu law and custom in effect before the enactment of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. It also rejected an argument that the respondent should be stopped from claiming that the appellant was not his wife, because she was not informed of his earlier marriage.
