[Discrepant outcome of intrauterine listeria infection in dichorionic twins].

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND CASE REPORT: We report on a case of fetal Listeriosis in a dichorionic twin pregnancy where both placentae, but only one of the twins were infected. While the firstborn child showed no infection and remained healthy until today, the other newborn had all clinical signs of granulomatosis infantiseptica and died despite of immediate resuscitation immediately after delivery. CONCLUSIONS: This discrepant course with Listeriosis in twins underlines, that fetal factors influence the clinical outcome in placental Listeriosis. The reasons for the infection of only one twin and the avoidance of the other twin remain unclarified. We speculate that immunologic mechanisms or the presence of meconium-stained amniotic fluid may play an important role for intrauterine infection with Listeriosis.

[Prevention of Listeria infections].

Listeriosis is a rare but very serious foodborne disease. The non-contamination of food products is the best prevention of listeriosis. In spite of notable efforts to improve the microbiologic quality of food products through surveillance and control of food contaminations, the prevention has still to be based upon the information of consumers. This information can take different forms. When a food product is found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, if the withdrawal of this product does not occur as early as to prevent its commercialisation, a consumers alert is necessary to avoid any subsequent human case and to allow a rapid medical care of exposed persons in case of occurrence of symptoms of the disease. A specific information from health professionals to persons with risk factors of contracting listeriosis is a point of debate. Immunocompromised persons, for instance do not represent an easily defined group. On the other hand, pregnant women that are specially at risk of developing listeriosis, with potentially life threatening consequences for their foetus, represent a well identified population. They are medically monitored, and, because they feel concerned, most of them accept, during their pregnancy, to follow some simple rules that, sometimes, change their habits. At present, information is given to pregnant women by different ways: documents, leaflets, posters. The health authorities have decided to reinforce this information. They are also working on a special advisory meeting, specially targeted at foodborne diseases (including listeriosis), that could take place, for pregnant women, during the first months of their pregnancy.

Listeria infection of silicone breast implant.

A case of breast implant infection with L. monocytogenes is presented. The nature of this organism, its usual mode of transmission, and factors predisposing to the development of listeriosis are reviewed. We speculate that, in this case, the organism was acquired during a natural period of depressed immunity due to pregnancy, and it initiated a low-grade infection around the breast prosthesis. Possible implications of this scenario are discussed.

Enhancement of host resistance against Listeria infection by Lactobacillus casei: activation of liver macrophages and peritoneal macrophages by Lactobacillus casei.

The functions of liver macrophages and peritoneal macrophages obtained after injection of Lactobacillus casei were examined. Listericidal activity in vivo was enhanced in liver macrophages 13 days after L. casei injection but was somewhat suppressed in the macrophages 2 days after the injection. The listericidal activity in vitro was enhanced in peritoneal macrophages obtained 13 days after L. casei injection but was suppressed in cells obtained 2 days later. The PMA-triggered respiratory burst in the liver macrophages elicited by L. casei was higher than that of resident macrophages. Alkaline phosphodiesterase activity in the liver macrophages was decreased by L. casei injection, as was also the case with peritoneal macrophages. These observations indicate that L. casei augmented cellular functions of both liver and peritoneal macrophages.

[Epidemiology of animal Listeria infections in France].

The animal listeriosis are sporadic diseases in the herds and flocks of herbivores generally in intensive farming with silage foods. The disease attacks other domestic or wild species. It's generally isolated cases or rare. The carrier animals are large in many species. 428 outbreaks have been detected in 1998-1999 of which 259 in cattle and 108 in sheep. The abortive forms are more important in the cattle and the meningoencephalitis in the sheep and goats. Cases are found in the poultry, birds, horse, dog, roe deer, rabbit, hare and wild boar.
