[Effectiveness of local treatment using a PVP-iodine compound for retained placenta in cows].

106 cattle with retained placenta were treated either with Vetisept-bolus or Tetran-bolus (controls) after an attempt to remove fetal membranes. Uterine involution judged by rectal palpation on the 28th day was the same in both groups, but more treatments were necessary for cows of the experimental group. Cows treated with Vetisept came in heat nine days earlier than controls (p < 0.05). The pregnancy rate of the controls (91.6%) was better (p < 0.05) than in the experimental group (60.7%). No significant differences between the two groups were encountered for pregnancy index, total index, and service period. Of 82 cows after single calving 50 got pregnant again. In 18 of the remaining cattle another pregnancy was not attempted. The other 14 were bred but did not conceive. Treatment with tetracycline seems to be slightly superior and safer than the treatment with PVP-iodine. It is uncertain, whether the higher (p < 0.05) losses of animals in the experimental group than in the controls is due to the different treatment, for most of the cows had been slaughtered because of insufficient milk production. Therapy with iodine is a recommended alternative to the treatment with tracycline for certain indications.

The in vitro selective concentration of an 125I-iodinated compound in human tumor cells.

Uptake studies of the potential endoradiotherapeutic agent, 6-125I-iodo-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinol bis(diammonium phosphate) have been carried out in vitro on a wide range of normal and malignant human cells. In general, for a standardized dose of 0.1 microCi/ml, the uptake of the compound into normal cells was 0.0015-0.135 pCi/cell. Uptake into malignant cells was significantly higher than normal cells; uptakes of 0.89-11.3 pCi/cell were noted for melanoma, teratoma of testis, osteosarcoma and adenocarcinoma of colon and pancreas. Comparative uptake ratios for melanoma: Chang liver cells and testicular teratoma:normal testis were 29 23, respectively. Larger uptake ratios are usually observed with higher doses.

Temperature dependence of formation of nanorods and dots of iodine compounds on an H-terminated Si(111) surface in a concentrated HI solution.

Immersion of atomically flat, H-terminated Si(111) surfaces in 7.6 M HI for 0.5 - 4 h caused spontaneous formation of nanosized clusters at the Si surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis suggested that the clusters were composed of silicon iodides (such as SiHxI4-x), produced most probably by Si etching with HI. Atomic force microscopy inspection revealed that the immersion at a low temperature below about 30 degrees C led to the formation of long rod-shaped clusters, oriented in the (112) direction or equivalents, whereas the immersion at a high temperature above 30 degrees C led to the formation of circular dot clusters, their size and shape changing abruptly at about 70 degrees C. It is shown experimentally that the formation of dot clusters at a high immersion temperature is explained on the basis of thermodynamics, whereas that of oriented rod clusters at a low temperature is explained by a kinetics-controlled mechanism.
