If hospitals were run like motels, many would have 'no vacancy' signs out front these days. For a variety of reasons, most hospitals are operating near capacity. Of course, hospitals don't like to turn away patients, so they build new space and look for ways to get patients in and out faster. Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento, CA, thinks it has hit upon the answer with a computer system that automates the patient flow management process and makes communication between staff members more efficient.

Psycho-oncology has been struggling to explore human side of cancer, which is a multidisciplinary area of oncology, epidemiology, immunology, endocrinology, sociology and bioethics, as well as psychiatry and psychology. This subspecialty addresses the two major goals; improving all aspects of quality of life, and cancer morbidity and mortality. Psycho-oncology in the 21 century addresses the needs at all stage of cancer, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, recurrence, ending active cancer treatment and palliative care. This paper focused and described current topics of psycho-oncology.
This article presents a comparative study about social workers' interdisciplinary advance directive communication practices with patients at several hospitals located in upstate New York. The sample consisted of physicians (n=32), nurses (n=74), and social workers (n=29). The research surveyed advance directive communication practices by discipline utilizing a self-administered questionnaire. Advance directive communication was operationalized as a cumulative process incorporating the following phases that were measured as scales: initiation of the topic, disclosure of information, identification of a surrogate decision-maker, discussion of treatment options, elicitation of patient values, interaction with family members, and collaboration with other health care professionals. Results suggest that social workers offer distinct skills in their advance directive communication practices and discuss advance directives more frequently than either physicians or nurses.

Zoonoses are fundamental determinants of community health. Preventing, identifying and managing these infections must be a central public health focus. Most current zoonoses research focuses on the interface of the pathogen and the clinically ill person, emphasizing microbial detection, mechanisms of pathogenicity and clinical intervention strategies, rather than examining the causes of emergence, persistence and spread of new zoonoses. There are gaps in the understanding of the animal determinants of emergence and the capacity to train highly qualified individuals; these are major obstacles to preventing new disease threats. The ability to predict the emergence of zoonoses and their resulting public health and societal impacts are hindered when insufficient effort is devoted to understanding zoonotic disease epidemiology, and when zoonoses are not examined in a manner that yields fundamental insight into their origin and spread. Emerging infectious disease research should rest on four pillars: enhanced communications across disciplinary and agency boundaries; the assessment and development of surveillance and disease detection tools; the examination of linkages between animal health determinants of human health outcomes; and finally, cross-disciplinary training and research. A national strategy to predict, prevent and manage emerging diseases must have a prominent and explicit role for veterinary and biological researchers. An integrated health approach would provide decision makers with a firmer foundation from which to build evidence-based disease prevention and control plans that involve complex human/animal/environmental systems, and would serve as the foundation to train and support the new cadre of individuals ultimately needed to maintain and apply research capacity in this area.
