Syn- and anticlinal isomers of 2a'-acetoxy-1,7'-diacetyl-7',7a'-dihydro-2-oxospiro[1H-indole-3(2H),2'(2a'H)-oxeto[3,2-b]indole].

In the syn- and anticlinal isomers of the title compound, C(22)H(18)N(2)O(6), the indole moiety is not completely planar, with the pyrrolidine ring being distorted very slightly towards a conformation intermediate between half-chair and envelope. The molecular and packing structures in the crystals of these isomers are stabilized by C-H...O interactions.

Trimethyl[3-methyl-1-(o-tolenesulfonyl)indol-2-ylmethyl]ammonium iodide and benzyl[3-bromo-1-(phenylsulfonyl)indol-2-ylmethyl]tolylamine.

The title compounds, C(20)H(25)N(2)O(2)S(+).I(-), (I), and C(29)H(25)BrN(2)O(2)S, (II), respectively, both crystallize in space group P-1. The pyrrole ring subtends an angle with the sulfonyl group of 33.6 degrees in (I) and 21.5 degrees in (II). The phenyl ring of the sulfonyl substituent makes a dihedral angle with the best plane of the indole moiety of 81.6 degrees in (I) and 67.2 degrees in (II). The lengthening or shortening of the C-N bond distances in both compounds is due to the electron-withdrawing character of the phenylsulfonyl group. The S atoms are in distorted tetrahedral configurations. The molecular structures are stabilized by C-H.O and C-H.I interactions in (I), and by C-H.O and C-H.N interactions in (II).

Studies on heterocyclic compounds: spiro [indole-3,2'-thiazolidine] derivatives. II. Antimicrobial activity of halogenated 3'-phenylspiro 3H-indole-3,2'-thiazolidine -2,4 (1H)-diones.

The following polyhalogenated 3'-phenyl 3H-indole-3,2'-thiazolidine -2,4' (1H)-dione of general formula (A) were synthesized and screened for antimicrobial activity. (formula: see text) where: X = H (I, III, V, VII, IX, XI), CH3 (II, IV, VI, VIII, X, XII); Y = H (I, II), 2,4-F2 (III, IV), 2,4-Cl2 (V, VI), 3,4-Cl2 (VII, VIII), 2,6-Cl2 (IX, X), 2,4,6-Cl3 (XI, XII). The general synthetic route involves the preparation of variously substituted isatin-3-imines, which are subjected to cyclocondensation with thioglycolic acid to give compounds I, III, V, VII, IX, XI, or thiolactic acid to give compounds II, IV, VI, VII, X, XII. The prepared compounds were screened against S. aureus, B. cereus, M. paratuberculosis, E. coli, Pr. mirabilis, Ps. aeruginosa, C. albicans, S. cerevisiae, A. niger by a disk-diffusion assay (Kirby-Bauer modified). The results of the antimicrobial screening showed that the polyhalogenated derivatives of type (A) exhibited varying degrees of activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi. Compound (III) showed a significant activity toward A. niger, moreover compound (IV) was active toward C. albicans. Compound (IX) was very active toward S. typhi and Ps. aeruginosa. Compounds (VII), (IX) and (XII) were very active toward M. paratuberculosis.

Chemistry of indoles carrying a basic function, Part 3. Synthesis of spiro[cyclopropane-1,3'[3H]indol]-2'(1'H)-ones with antihypoxic effects.

Hydroxyindolones (1-6, 15-16) were transformed into isatinylidenes (7, 9-13, 17-19) by dehydration with 4-toluenesulfonic acid. The dimer-type compounds (14, 20) were also isolated in a few cases. The obtained isatinylidenes were transformed into 3-spiro-cyclopropane-oxindoles (21-32) with dimethyloxosulfonium methylide. Compound 22 shows protective effects against hypobaric hypoxia and triethyltin induced brain edema.
