Frustration driven lattice distortion: an NMR investigation of Y(2)Mo(2)O(7).

We have investigated the (89)Y NMR spectrum and spin lattice relaxation, T(1), in the magnetically frustrated pyrochlore Y(2)Mo(2)O(7). We find that upon cooling the spectrum shifts, and broadens asymmetrically. A detailed examination of the low T spectrum reveals that it is constructed from multiple peaks, each shifted by a different amount. We argue that this spectrum is due to discrete lattice distortions and speculate that these distortions relieve the frustration and reduce the system's energy.

Interaction of frustrated magnetic sublattices in ErMnO3.

A spontaneous or field induced "hidden" phase transition with antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic reordering is disclosed in multiply frustrated hexagonal ErMnO3. It is revealed by Faraday rotation and second harmonic generation as sublattice-sensitive probes to the Er and Mn systems. The acquired phase diagram in the magnetic-field-temperature plane is shown to be a consequence of a broken geometric frustration between the Er and Mn lattices, giving way to anisotropic superexchange between the 3d and 4f ions.

Critical behavior of frustrated Josephson junction arrays with bond disorder.

The scaling behavior of the current-voltage (IV) characteristics of a two-dimensional proximity-coupled Josephson junction array (JJA) with quenched bond disorder was investigated for frustrations f = 1/5, 1/3, 2/5, and 1/2. For all these frustrations including 1/5 and 2/5 where a strongly first-order phase transition is expected in the absence of disorder, the IV characteristics exhibited a good scaling behavior. The critical exponent nu indicates that bond disorder may drive the phase transitions to be continuous but not into the Ising universality class, contrary to what was observed in Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamic critical exponent z for JJA's was found to be only 0.60-0.77.

Charge ordering and spin frustration in AlV2-x CrxO4.

The relationship between charge and spin degrees of freedom in a geometrically frustrated system, AlV2-xCrxO4 spinel, is investigated. Upon Cr doping, the charge-ordered phase of AlV2O4 is rapidly suppressed and a charge-disordered phase grows up instead. It is found that the magnetic ground state is a spin-glass state dominated by geometrical frustration for both phases, but larger spin entropy remains down to low temperatures in the charge-ordered phase, possibly owing to its two-dimensional character.

Singlet excitations in pyrochlore: a study of quantum frustration.

We apply the contractor renormalization (CORE) method to the spin half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the frustrated checkerboard and pyrochlore lattices. Their ground states are spin-gapped singlets which break lattice symmetry. Their effective Hamiltonians describe fluctuations of orthogonal singlet pairs on tetrahedral blocks, at an emergent low energy scale. We discuss low temperature thermodynamics and new interpretations of finite size numerical data. We argue that our results are common to many models of quantum frustration.

Valence-bond spin-liquid state in two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

Fermionic valence-bond approach in terms of SU(4) representation is proposed to describe the J1-J2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) model on a bipartite square lattice. A uniform mean field solution without breaking the translational and rotational symmetries describes a valence-bond spin-liquid state, interpolating the two different AF ordered states in the large J1 and large J2 limits, respectively. This novel spin-liquid state is gapless with the vanishing density of states at the Fermi nodal points. Moreover, a sharp resonance peak in the dynamic structure factor is predicted for momenta q=(0,0) and (pi,pi) in the strongly frustrated limit J(2)/J(1) approximately 1/2, which can be checked by neutron scattering experiments.

Tetramerization of a frustrated spin-1/2 chain.

We investigate a model of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to adiabatic phonons with a general form of magnetoelastic coupling. For large enough frustration and lattice coupling, a new tetramerized phase with three different bond lengths is found. We argue that the zigzag spin-1/2 chain LiV2O5 might be a good candidate to observe such a phase.

Absence of magnetic order in Yb3Ga5O12: relation between phase transition and entropy in geometrically frustrated materials.

From muon spin relaxation spectroscopy experiments, we show that the sharp peak (lambda-type anomaly) detected by specific heat measurements at 54 mK for the ytterbium gallium garnet compound, Yb3Ga5O12, does not correspond to the onset of a magnetic phase transition, but to a pronounced building up of dynamical magnetic pair correlations. Beside the lambda anomaly, a broad hump is observed at higher temperature in the specific heat of this garnet and other geometrically frustrated compounds. Comparing with other frustrated magnetic systems we infer that a ground state with long-range order is reached only when at least 1/4-1/3 of the magnetic entropy is released at the lambda transition.

Spin and orbital frustration in MnSc2S4 and FeSc2S4.

Crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat were measured in the normal cubic spinel compounds MnSc2S4 and FeSc2S4. Down to the lowest temperatures, both compounds remain cubic and reveal strong magnetic frustration. Specifically the Fe compound is characterized by a Curie-Weiss (CW) temperature ThetaCW = -45 K and does not show any indications of order down to 50 mK. In addition, the Jahn-Teller ion Fe2+ is orbitally frustrated. Hence, FeSc2S4 belongs to the rare class of spin-orbital liquids. MnSc2S4 is a spin liquid for temperatures T>TN approximately 2 K.

Intrinsic susceptibility and bond defects in the novel two dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet Ba2Sn2ZnCr7pGa10-7pO22.

We present microscopic and macroscopic magnetic properties of the highly frustrated antiferromagnet Ba(2)Sn(2)ZnCr(7p)Ga(10-7p)O22, respectively, probed with NMR and SQUID experiments. The T variation of the intrinsic susceptibility of the Cr3+ frustrated Kagomé bilayer, chi(Kag), displays a maximum around 45 K. The dilution of the magnetic lattice has been studied in detail for 0.29</=p</=0.97. Novel dilution independent defects, likely related with magnetic bond disorder, are evidenced and discussed. We compare our results to SrCr(9p)Ga(12-9p)O19. Both bond defects and spin vacancies do not affect the average susceptibility of the Kagomé bilayers.

Spin-liquid versus dimerized ground states in a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

We present a density matrix renormalization group study of the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 frustrated J1-J3 Heisenberg n(l)-leg ladders (with n(l) up to 8). For strong frustration (J(3)/J(1) approximately 0.5), both even-leg and odd-leg ladders display a finite gap to spin excitations, which we argue remains finite in the two-dimensional limit. In this regime, on odd-leg ladders the ground state is spontaneously dimerized, in agreement with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis prediction, while on even-leg ladders the dimer correlations decay exponentially. The magnitude of the dimer order parameter decreases as the number of legs increases, consistent with a two-dimensional spin-liquid ground state.

Thermal conductivity of geometrically frustrated, ferroelectric YMnO3: extraordinary spin-phonon interactions.

The thermal conductivity of the magnetically frustrated, ferroelectric YMnO3 exhibits an isotropic suppression in the cooperative paramagnetic state, followed by a sudden increase upon magnetic ordering. This unprecedented behavior without an associated static structural distortion probably originates from the strong dynamic coupling between acoustic phonons and low-energy spin fluctuations in geometrically frustrated magnets. The replacement of magnetic Ho for Y at the ferroelectrically active site results in an even larger effect, suggestive of the strong influence of multiferroicity.

Magnetic-field induced transition to the 1/2 magnetization plateau state in the geometrically frustrated magnet CdCr2O4.

The magnetization of the geometrically frustrated spinel CdCr2O4 was measured in pulsed fields of up to 47 T. We found a metamagnetic transition to a very wide magnetization plateau state with one half of the full moment of S=3/2 Cr3+ at 28 T, independent of the field direction. This is the first observation of magnetization plateau state realized in Heisenberg pyrochlore magnet. The plateau state can be ascribed to a collinear spin configuration with three-up and one-down spins out of four spins of each Cr tetrahedron. A large magnetostriction is observed at the transition in spite of the negligible spin-orbit couplings. We argue that spin frustration plays a vital role in this large spin-lattice coupling.

String picture for a model of frustrated quantum magnets and dimers.

We study the effect of quantum dynamics on geometrically frustrated magnets for a transverse field Ising model at finite temperatures. We develop a microscopic derivation of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson action for this model and show that it can be interpreted as the free energy of a 3D elastic lattice of noncrossing strings. As a first application, we quantitatively predict the phase diagram and correlations, confirming excellently a key prediction of recent simulations about the existence of unusual phase transitions and an ordered phase. We discuss the implications of our string picture for the understanding of the effect of quenched disorder in such quantum frustrated systems.

Long-range frustration in a spin-glass model of the vertex-cover problem.

In a spin-glass system on a random graph, some vertices have their spins changing among different configurations of a ground-state domain. Long-range frustrations may exist among these unfrozen vertices in the sense that certain combinations of spin values for these vertices may never appear in any configuration of this domain. We present a mean field theory to tackle such long-range frustrations and apply it to the NP-hard minimum vertex-cover (hard-core gas condensation) problem. Our analytical results on the ground-state energy density and on the fraction of frozen vertices are in good agreement with known numerical and mathematical results.

Coexistence of long-range order and spin fluctuation in geometrically frustrated clinoatacamite Cu2Cl(OH)3.

Muon spin rotation experiments are carried out on clinoatacamite, Cu2Cl(OH)3, which is a new geometrically frustrated system featuring a three-dimensional network of corner-sharing tetrahedral 3d Cu2+ spins. A long-range antiferromagnetic order occurs below 18.1 K with a surprisingly small entropy release of about 0.05Rln2/Cu. Below 6.5 K, the static long-range order transforms abruptly into a metastable state with nearly complete depolarization of muon spins which suggests strong fluctuation. The system then enters a state in which partial long-range order and spin fluctuation coexist down to the lowest experimentally attainable temperature of 20 mK. This work presents a novel system for studying geometric frustration.

Two-step restoration of SU(2) symmetry in a frustrated ring-exchange magnet.

We demonstrate the existence of a spin-nematic, moment-free phase in a quantum four-spin ring-exchange model on the square lattice. This unusual quantum state is created by the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations that lead to a partial restoration of SU(2) symmetry when going from a four-sublattice orthogonal biaxial Néel order to this exotic uniaxial magnet. A further increase of frustration drives a transition to a fully gapped SU(2) symmetric valence bond crystal.

A frustrated packing model for the B6-B1-SmAPA sequence of phases in banana shaped molecules.

A vast majority of compounds with bent core or banana shaped molecules exhibit the phase sequence B6-B1-B2 as the chain length is increased in a homologous series. The B6 phase has an intercalated fluid lamellar structure with a layer spacing of half the molecular length. The B1 phase has a two dimensionally periodic rectangular columnar structure. The B2 phase has a monolayer fluid lamellar structure with molecules tilted with respect to the layer normal. Neglecting the tilt order of the molecules in the B2 phase, we have developed a frustrated packing model to describe this phase sequence qualitatively. The model has some analogy with that of the frustrated smectics exhibited by highly polar rod like molecules.
