Toxicity of different industrial effluents in Taiwan: a comparison of the sensitivity of Daphnia similis and Microtox.

Industrial effluents are known to exhibit toxicity toward different aquatic organisms. In Taiwan management of these discharges still relies on chemical and physical and physical characteristics of water, although various standard method for assessing aquatic toxicity have been proposed by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration. In this study we examined the toxicity and compared the sensitivity of different types of industrial effluents using two proposed toxicity tests: the Daphnia similis acute toxicity test and the Microtox acute assay (Vibrio fischeri). Results showed that electroplating effluents were the most toxic of all the effluents tested, followed by acrylonitrile manufacturing, pulp/paper, and tannery effluents. The EC50 of an electroplating effluent for D. similis and V. fischeri (15 min) was as low as, respectively, 2.9% and 3.9% of the whole effluent. The other effluents were not acutely toxic to either organism tested. However, the tests exhibited different sensitivity toward various discharges. Only the electroplating and acrylonitrile manufacturing effluents had effects on both organisms. These results indicate the importance of the incorporation of aquatic toxicity tests into the management scheme for treated wastewaters.

Vertical column hydroclassification of metal-contaminated soils.

The purpose of this work was to reduce soil volumes requiring aggressive treatment. A second purpose was to determine differences in separation due to distinct forms of the metal contamination and soil texture. The objectives were to apply hydroclassification and find mass and metal-contaminant distribution of four soils contaminated with heavy metals from firing ranges, a small arms incinerator, and an electroplating operation. The soils were slurried in water, sieved, and exposed to upward flowing water to separate the soil particles into four nominal size ranges. The popping furnace soil exhibited substantial lead among all particle size fractions. The firing range soils exhibited bimodal distributions. The electroplating soil exhibited a strong concentration of metals toward the <63 microm fraction. Attrition scrubbing moderately improved the enrichment of metals in several fractions. Extraction revealed the lead and chromium in the electroplating soil to be relatively immobile. These results suggest metal distributions are influenced by the different mechanisms of introduction into the soil. They also help to predict performance of processing options such as sieving hydroclassification and attrition scrubbing.

Preparation and characterization of radioactive Co/188Re stents intended for lung cancer treatment using an electrodeposition method.

A procedure for electroplating a Co/(188)Re alloy layer on metal coils (stents) at room temperature was developed. The electroplating of the Co/(188)Re alloy layer was carried out at a current density of 93 A m(-2) and produced a physically strong Co/(188)Re alloy layer that adhered well to a thin gold strike layer on top of the stent material. The final gold layer was also stable. An empirically-found equation correlates the radioactive electroplating efficiency factor to the concentration of the radioisotope and was used to deposit predetermined amounts of radioactivity on the stent surface. Radioactive stents can be prepared and quality control performed within 2 hours using an automated electroplater and dosimetric quality control system. The radioactivity was homogeneously distributed on the stent surface. The in vitro stability in human plasma at 37 degrees C was found to be greater than 95% for both Wallstent and Ultraflex stent after 72 hours of incubation. A clinical pilot trial is planned after successful completion of animal testing.

Electrochemical platinum coatings for improving performance of implantable microelectrode arrays.

The formation and properties of electrochemical platinum films grown on platinum contacts contained in implantable flexible microelectrodes were investigated. The resulting platinum deposits were obtained by applying cyclic voltammetry to baths containing concentrations around 70 mM of chloroplatinic acid. A pre-activation step was necessary before the platinum-electroplating step in order to achieve good adhesive properties. The benefits of this process were ascribed to higher corrosion resistance, lower impedance and improved adhesion to the sputtered platinum. These improvements can make the application of this electrochemical technique highly useful for increasing the lifetime of implantable microelectrode arrays, such as cuff structures (IEEE Trans. Biomed. Eng. 40 (1993) 640). These medical devices, obtained by semiconductor technology could be used for selective stimulation of nerve fascicles, although, poor long-term performance has been achieved with them. The dissolution rate for platinum thin-film microelectrodes under fixed corrosion test conditions was 38.8 ng/C. Lower rates were observed for electroplated microelectrodes, obtaining a dissolution rate of 7.8 ng/C under analogous experimental ageing conditions. The corrosion behaviour of the electroplated platinum during stimulation experimental conditions was estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Light scattering and birefringence changes during activity in the electric organ of electrophorus electricus.

1. In an attempt to obtain information about structural changes related to electrical activity in Electrophorus electroplates, we have determined the size and time course of the changes in light scattering and in bire-fringence that occur during and after the discharge of the electric organ.2. The changes in light intensity detected with a photomultiplier were never greater than 0.2% for a single discharge, and were often much smaller than this, but records with an acceptable ratio of signal to noise could be obtained by signal-averaging techniques.3. A single stimulus led to a decrease, then an increase, and finally another decrease in the light scattered by slices of the main electric organ. These three phases were designated E1, E2 and E3.4. E1 started at the beginning of the action potential, and its peak was reached at the same time as the completion of repolarization, even when the repolarization was delayed by cooling or hastened by drawing larger currents from the tissue.5. E2 was proportional to the integral of the current flowing through the slice of electric organ, and may arise from the swelling and shrinking of the tubules that stud the faces of the electroplates. It developed within a millisecond or two of the start of an applied current, and lasted for about 100 msec.6. E3 was a variable decrease in scattering that lasted for some seconds.7. A stimulus also led to a transient increase in the birefringence of the electric organ. The optical change followed the change in electrical potential across the innervated faces of the electroplates with a delay of somewhat under 50 musec.8. This voltage-dependent change in birefringence may arise from a Kerr effect (electric birefringence) in the membrane or from compression of the membrane.

Plasma lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes status in workers exposed to cadmium.

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) is a corrosion-resistant metal, used extensively for electroplating in the automobile, electronic and aerospace industry. Only a few studies are available regarding Cd-induced oxidative stress in animals, but no reports are available regarding the effects of Cd on oxidative stress during occupational exposure. OBJECTIVE: The present study was carried out to determine the plasma lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes status in workers exposed to Cd during electroplating. METHODS: 50 subjects exposed to Cd during electroplating formed the study group. An equal number of age-sex matched subjects, working in the administrative section, formed the control group. Urinary Cd levels were determined using the flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Plasma lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes were determined using spectrophotometric methods. RESULTS: A significant increase of plasma lipid peroxidation and a significant decrease of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase levels were noted in the study group compared with the control group. The level of plasma lipid peroxidation was positively and erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes were negatively and significantly associated with Cd levels in urine. Multiple regression analysis assessed the oxidative stress associated with Cd and other lifestyle confounding factors, such as age, body mass index, the consumption of vegetables, coffee, tea, smoking and alcohol. Analysis showed that the lifestyle confounding factors viz; smoking, body mass index and urinary Cd levels > 5 microg/g of creatinine, were significantly associated with oxidative stress. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that increased plasma lipid peroxidation and decreased superoxide dismutase levels could be used as biomarkers of oxidative stress in cadmium-exposed workers.

Lung function tests in electroplaters of East Delhi.

The presence of high concentration of metals (Cr, Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, etc.) in the work place environments of various types of industries including electroplating units are well known to influence respiratory system. Pulmonary function tests including forced expiratory capacity (FVC), volumes, mechanics and slow vital capacity (SVC) were studied in 80 males, divided into group I and Group II of 40 each were drawn from electroplating and non-electroplating units, respectively from East Delhi factories. The lung function tests were measured using computerized Spiro-232 of P.K. Morgan, Values of majority of lung function parameters such as FEV1/FVC%, FEF50 FEF75, PIFR, FIF50, MVV and SVC were decreased in electroplaters, perhaps due to the exposure to metals and their lower anthropmetric results as compared with non electoplaters. Where as results of TLC, FRC, RV & RV/ TLC% were higher in electroplaters and this may be attributed to higher values of RV in them as compared with non electroplaters.
