Cognitive motivations associated with screening mammography in Cyprus.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between cognitive motivations, demographic characteristics, related preventive health behaviors, and intention to obtain a first screening mammogram among Greek Cypriot women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study took place at the outpatient clinics of the General Hospital of Nicosia during the fall of 1999. The participants were 293 women asymptomatic of breast cancer and with no previous mammographic experience. The Theory of Planned Behavior in conjunction with the construct of self-efficacy was used in the development of the questionnaire. The assessment also included demographic information, practice of other preventive health behaviors, and knowledge of breast cancer screening. RESULTS: Self-efficacy was the most significant determinant of initial screening mammography, followed by normative beliefs associated with the physician, family and close friends, and perceived behavioral control beliefs related to barriers to obtaining a mammogram. Educational level, time of last clinical breast examination, and status of breast self-examination were also strongly implicated in the explanation of initial screening mammography. CONCLUSIONS: Insights into specific salient motivational cognitions and certain demographic characteristics or related preventive health behaviors are crucial to the development and implementation of effective intervention strategies.

Indoor radon (222Rn) concentration measurements in Cyprus using high-sensitivity portable detectors.

Using high-sensitivity radon ((222)Rn) portable detectors (passive electronic devices of the type RADIM3), the airborne (222)Rn concentration in the interior of various Cypriot buildings and dwellings was measured. For each preselected building and dwelling, a calibrated detector was put into a closed room, and the (222)Rn concentration was registered in sampling intervals of 2 to 4 h for a total counting time of typically 48 h. (222)Rn activity concentrations were found to be in the range of 6.2 to 102.8 Bq m(-3), with an overall arithmetic mean value of (19.3+/-14.7) Bq m(-3). This value is by a factor of two below the world average (population-weighted) value of 39 Bq m(-3). The total annual effective dose equivalent to the Cypriot population was calculated to be between 0.16 and 2.6 mSv with an overall arithmetic mean value of (0.49+/-0.37) mSv.

Pollution of coastal region impacted by acid mine drainage in Morphou bay, northern Cyprus.

Abandoned copper mines, located in Lefka-Xeros area by the Morphou bay were primarily producing copper. Secondary products, such as silver and gold were also produced for a century by cyanide leaching method. The residues of mining processes were deposited in large tailing ponds that were constructed with primitive technology. In this research, water samples from several different points of tailing ponds, Lefka river and coast of Morphou bay are collected. The laboratory analysis of the samples is then carried out, considering basic pollutant parameters such as copper. The cross-shore and Longshore numerical modelling technique is applied associating the wave climate and the morphologic characteristics of the Morphou bay with the laboratory results to measure long-term effects of the pollution, diffused into the Mediterranean sea.
