Chronic lymphocytic leukaemias and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas by histological type in farming-animal breeding workers: a population case-control study based on job titles.

OBJECTIVES: A population based case-control study was conducted in a highly agricultural area in the north east of Italy to evaluate the association between farming and animal breeding and the risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). METHODS: Occupational histories and other data were collected by personal interview on 164 NHLs, 23 CLLs, diagnosed in 1988-90, and on 977 controls. This paper only reports the results of the analysis relative to the coding of job titles through the modified International Labour Office (ILO) classification. Estimates of odds ratios (ORs) for occupational variables were calculated, after adjustment for sex, age, altitude of municipality, first degree familiarity, and previous Herpes zoster infection. RESULTS: From the analysis of the most frequent occupational categories, no occupation showed a significantly high risk. When the two job titles farmers only and farmer-breeders who are also involved in animal breeding are classified within the extremely varied occupation of agriculture or animal-breeding or fishing, a high risk for NHLs and CLLs is seen in the farmer-breeders (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.22 - 2.63). Analyses according to histological type show that the risks are concentrated in CLLs and in low grade NHLs. No effect or trend by period at work or duration of employment in farming and animal breeding was found. CONCLUSION: Subjects working in agriculture associated with animal breeding are at high risk of NHL/CLLs, particularly CLLs and low grade NHLs. This finding could be related to the use of chemicals in agriculture or to exposure to animal transmitted diseases or specific chemicals used in animal breeding.

Visual method for evaluating the state of sexual development in male grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis).

Stages of sexual development in grey squirrels were classified by scoring the presence of periscrotal hair and staining, as well as the position, size and colour of testes, to develop a visual breeding score (VBS). The VBS was a highly significant predictor of the presence and concentration of epididymal spermatozoa, which were produced from 12 months of age. Two classes of producers were identified: 'high' with spermatozoa levels > 10 x 10(6) mL(-1) and 'low' with spermatozoa levels < 10 x 10(6) mL(-1). Sperm motility was variable across all levels of productive males but was generally higher in the 'high' group, indicating that these were 'functional' males. Sexual regression was observed in two autumn periods. The VBS was less effective in determining states of regression and redevelopment; the confidence of classification improved when age class (adult or prepubertal) and date of capture was known. The use of the VBS to classify stages of sexual development in grey squirrels will improve selection of animals for studies of population biology and fertility control, and has potential application in captive breeding studies of rare Sciuridae species.

Prognostic factors associated with survival two years after surgery in dogs with malignant mammary tumors: 79 cases (1998-2002).

OBJECTIVE: To identify prognostic factors for female dogs that have undergone surgical removal of malignant mammary tumors. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 79 female dogs with malignant mammary tumors. PROCEDURE: Information obtained from the medical records included breed, age, sex, tumor size (maximum diameter), number and location of affected mammary glands, time between tumor identification and surgical removal, radiographic evidence of distant metastasis, surgical procedure, ovariohysterectomy (OHE) status, histologic classification of the tumor, and survival time. RESULTS: Results of univariate analyses indicated that clinical stage, tumor size, OHE status, metastasis to adjacent lymph nodes or distant sites, and histologic classification of the tumor were significantly associated with survival 2 years after surgery. Tumors > or = 5 cm in diameter and tumors that had been identified > 6 months before surgery were more likely to metastasize to adjacent lymph nodes. Ovariohysterectomy was more beneficial in dogs with complex carcinomas than in dogs with simple carcinomas. In multivariate analyses, clinical stage, tumor size, and OHE status were significantly associated with survival 2 years after surgery. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that tumor stage, tumor size, and OHE status were significant prognostic factors associated with survival 2 years after surgery in dogs with malignant mammary tumors. Further, either dogs with tumors > or = 5 cm in diameter or dogs with tumors present for > 6 months prior to surgery had a higher risk of having lymph node metastases.

[Behavior disorders in dogs--study of their classification].

Introductory reflections are represented on the present human-canine relationship which often is disturbed respectively characterized by man's overdoings in any direction. Definition and differentiation of the multicausal variability of canine behaviour is given by a critical literature review and own studies on breed - specific behaviour differences and differences in human-canine relationships. The most common forms of canine abnormal behaviour are classified after BUCHHOLTZ (1989). Relation to man plays the main role in canine development. Isolation of man, for example, by growing up living in kennel and not within the family causes canine abnormal behaviour nearly predictable, as my results of sequence analysis verify. Congenital disorders with pathologic manifestation are still rare, relatively increasing is acquired abnormal behaviour following genetic disposition. Sensitive developmental phases as well as the human relationship are important for environmental adaptation. Aggression in dogs towards human for example often refers to isolated development in kennels. Nevertheless abnormal canine behaviour is often overdiagnosed. In many cases the underlying cause is a form of "ritualized misunderstanding" between dog and man depending on unrealistic conceptions and expectations of men about canine behaviour. This type of "abnormal" behaviour is easily curable by therapy.

Low level of genetic diversity in cultivated Pigeonpea compared to its wild relatives is revealed by diversity arrays technology.

Understanding the distribution of genetic diversity among individuals, populations and gene pools is crucial for the efficient management of germplasm collections and breeding programs. Diversity analysis is routinely carried out using sequencing of selected gene(s) or molecular marker technologies. Here we report on the development of Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) for pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) and its wild relatives. DArT tests thousands of genomic loci for polymorphism and provides the binary scores for hundreds of markers in a single hybridization-based assay. We tested eight complexity reduction methods using various combinations of restriction enzymes and selected PstI/HaeIII genomic representation with the largest frequency of polymorphic clones (19.8%) to produce genotyping arrays. The performance of the PstI/HaeIII array was evaluated by typing 96 accessions representing nearly 20 species of Cajanus. A total of nearly 700 markers were identified with the average call rate of 96.0% and the scoring reproducibility of 99.7%. DArT markers revealed genetic relationships among the accessions consistent with the available information and systematic classification. Most of the diversity was among the wild relatives of pigeonpea or between the wild species and the cultivated C. cajan. Only 64 markers were polymorphic among the cultivated accessions. Such narrow genetic base is likely to represent a serious impediment to breeding progress in pigeonpea. Our study shows that DArT can be effectively applied in molecular systematics and biodiversity studies.

Mapping of resistance to vegetable polyphenols among Aedes taxa (Diptera, Culicidae) on a molecular phylogeny.

To recover some evolutionary aspects of the interaction between culicine larvae and dietary polyphenols of the vegetation surrounding mosquito breeding sites, we constructed a phylogeny of the most common French Aedes species, chosen as reference species. We also evaluated the differential resistance of these larval taxa to the polyphenols of leaf litter from the riparian vegetation used as a food source. Mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis was performed among 14 different taxa and ecotypes (Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. cantans, Ae. caspius, Ae. cataphylla, Ae. cinereus, Ae. detritus, Ae. geniculatus, Ae. mariae, Ae. pullatus, Ae. punctor, Ae. rusticus, Ae. sticticus, and Ae. vexans) through direct sequencing of a 763-base segment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene. Phylogenetic analysis, based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences, was conducted by means of parsimony and distance methods. The differential tolerance of larvae to vegetable leaf litter was comparatively tested by use of 10-month-old alder leaf litter as an experimental standard. The absence of correlation between resistance to polyphenols and molecular phylogeny suggests that larval adaptation to polyphenol-rich vegetable breeding sites is a labile character. The acquisition of such resistance appears not to be ancestrally inherited, but rather to be a dynamic adaptation to the environment. Molecular data also support the classical morphological classification within the Aedes genus.

Factors affecting performance of Nili-Ravi buffaloes in Pakistan.

Effects of herd, year, age, season, and lactation length on milk yield and reproductive efficiency for the Nili-Ravi breed of buffalo were determined by analysis of variance of 5,716 lactation records from two herds in Pakistan. Herds differed in all traits. Herd average milk yields were 1,702 and 2,064 kg. Year, season, herd, parity number, days in milk, days open, age, and sire all influenced milk yield. Herd, year, season, and parity number also had significant effects on days open and calving interval. Month of calving was important for time until return to estrus. Percentages of variance in milk yield attributed to herd, year, sire, cow, and residual were 20.3, 11.4, 4.3, 17.0, and 47.0. Classification of lactation length (greater than 60, greater than 250, or at least 305 days) markedly influenced the sire component of variance suggesting some interdependence of milk yield and lactation length. Total variance for milk yield was 466,911 kg2. Within herd heritability for milk yield was .25, and repeatability was low (.31). Predicted breeding values for sires for 250 to 305-day milk ranged from -172 kg to +260. Cows in Herd 1 completed 5.58 lactations with an average herd life of 12.3 yr; Herd 2 cows completed 4.52 lactations with culling at 10.6 yr. Frequency of termination of lactations because of mastitis, reproductive problems, or health was similar to frequencies for cattle. Factors affecting milk yield in buffaloes are similar to those of cattle.

[Classifications of 202 tibial fractures in dogs and cats].

202 Tibial fractures, in 138 dogs and 64 cats, were classified according to the system of Unger. The animals were presented between 1989 and 1994 to four Dutch veterinary orthopaedic referral clinics. In addition to the type of fracture, demographic information was taken into account including the species, the age of the patient, the size of the breed, the treatment, whether it was a open or closed fracture and the orthopaedic clinic. Possible correlation between the type of fracture and the variables, as well as correlations among the latter, were examined statistically. In this study 73% of the tibial fractures in dogs and cats were in the diaphysis, oblique fracture being the most frequent (24%). Proximal tibial fractures in dogs were usually extra-articular and 87% of these involved avulsion of the tibial tubercle. Malleolar fractures accounted for 57% of the distal fractures. A significant correlation was found between the localization of the fracture (proximal, diaphyseal or distal) and the species (cat or dog), between an avulsion fracture of the tibial tubercle and the age in dogs, between an incomplete tibial fracture and the age, between a malleolar fracture and a complicated (i.e., open) fracture, between a butterfly fracture and a complicated fracture, and between the applied therapy and the orthopaedic clinic. The classification system of Unger is very useful for inventory and documentation, but because of the lack of data about physeal fractures, the degree of injury to the surrounding soft tissues, and the influence of differences between surgeons, it cannot be used to determine therapy.

Prevalence and morphologic features of apical deltas in the canine teeth of dogs.

Prevalence and morphologic features of the apical delta in the canine teeth of dogs were determined to assist clinicians in the endodontic treatment of these teeth. Eighty-two canine teeth from mixed-breed dogs were cleared and dyed to outline root canal ramifications. Apical deltas were classified according to location in the dental arch, number of ramifications, and vertical extent of these ramifications from the apical terminus. A classification system was devised to aid in identification and treatment of the delta. Recommendations were made regarding indications for conventional and/or surgical endodontic therapy depending on the type of delta encountered. Apical deltas were detected in 69.5% of the canine teeth studied. Surgical endodontic intervention should be seriously considered when the delta is found to extend a distance > 1 mm from the apical terminus.

[Clinical chemical investigation of selected laboratory parameters of cerebrospinal fluid and blood of health cattle].

Selected Parameters in cerebrospinal fluid of adult, healthy cattle of different breeds were analyzed. Group size amounted to 68. Liquor samples were taken by lumbosacral punction. At the same time blood was taken from the Vena jugularis for analysis of the same parameters as in cerebrospinal fluid. Classification into 3 groups based on the macroscopic aspect of the cerebrospinal fluid: clear-colourless, flaky-colourless, bloody-flaky. In the first group all parameters were analyzed in order to fix standard distribution. A range of standard values of every parameter in cerebrospinal fluid was defined after finding of runaways and narrowing of random sample to 95%. Standard values for the parameters were: TP 0.83-1.40 g/l, GLU 1.18-3.20 mmol/l, LAC 1.4-1.9 mmol/l, CK 0.2-18.7 U/l, GLDH 0.7-3.7 U/l, AST 3.2-12.8 U/l. Possibilities to integrate results from the other two groups into these standard values were shown. A linear correlation between cerebrospinal fluid and blood serum values was found to exist for GLU (r = 0.91), LAC (r = 0.55) and GLDH (r = 0.48).

Relationships among seminal culture, seminal white blood cells, and the percentage of primary sperm abnormalities in bulls evaluated prior to the breeding season.

Semen samples from 100 beef breed bulls were evaluated for sperm morphology (phased contrast microscopy), seminal white blood cells, and the presence of potential reproductive pathogens. Eligibility required visualization of the glans penis throughout semen collection. Based on clinical spermiograms, bulls were grouped into normal, marginal, or unsatisfactory morphology classifications. The 3 experimental groups were similar in age and scrotal circumference and differed significantly in the percentage of primary sperm abnormalities. Most semen samples (94%) contained one or more potential reproductive pathogens (Hemophilus somnus. Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, Arcanobacterium pyogenes and Ureaplasma diversum). No significant relationship could be demonstrated between primary abnormalities and the assigned culture score. Our experimental results suggest that clinicians should interpret clinical semen culture results with great care. No significant relationship could be demonstrated between primary abnormalities and assigned white blood cell (WBC) score, although, only 1% of the samples was scored >5 WBC per high power field. The use of seminal WBC score may be valid adjunct to routine semen evaluation when that threshold is the basis for clinical decisions.

Combining visible and near-infrared spectroscopy with chemometrics to trace muscles from an autochthonous breed of pig produced in Uruguay: a feasibility study.

Visible (Vis) and near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics was explored as a tool to trace muscles from autochthonous and crossbreed pigs from Uruguay. Muscles were sourced from two breeds, namely, the Pampa-Rocha (PR) and the Pampa-Rocha x Duroc (PRxD) crossbreed. Minced muscles were scanned in the Vis and NIR regions (400-2,500 nm) in a monochromator instrument in reflectance. Principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant partial least square regression (DPLS), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) based on PCA scores and soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) were used to identify the origin of the muscles based on Vis and NIR data. Full cross validation was used as validation method when classification models were developed. DPLS correctly classified 87% of PR and 78% of PRxD muscle samples. LDA calibration models correctly classified 87 and 67% of muscles as PR and PRxD, respectively. SIMCA correctly classified 100% of PR muscles. The results demonstrated the usefulness of Vis and NIR spectra combined with chemometrics as rapid method for authentication and identification of muscles according to the breed of pig.

Hormonal therapy for sows weaned during fall and winter.

Sows from five commercial herds were weaned in the fall and winter and used to ascertain the potential application of hormonal therapy to stimulate subsequent litter size born. At weaning sows within parity (1, 2, and 3 through 6) and lactation length classification (early weaned, < or = 14 d; conventionally weaned, > 14 d) were randomly assigned to treatment. Treatments were injection with P.G. 600 (400 IU PMSG with 200 IU hCG) at weaning or no treatment. Sows were individually observed for estrus and mated following protocol for each herd. Breeding, culling, and farrowing data were collected. Treatment with P.G. 600 did not change subsequent rebreeding performance for sows at parity 1 or parities 3 through 6. However, conventionally weaned parity-2 sows treated with P.G. 600 were more likely (P < .05) to return to estrus than conventionally weaned controls (99.0 vs 93.6%, respectively). For parity-1 and parity-2 sows, treatment did not significantly change the likelihood for farrow percentage. However, the likelihood to farrow a litter was greater (P < .05) among P.G. 600-treated sows at parities 3 to 6 that were conventionally weaned (84.4 vs 71.3%, respectively). Subsequent litter birth weight for parity-1 sows treated with P.G. 600 was lower (P < .02) than for controls (15.6 vs 16.6 kg, respectively). Subsequent litter size at birth was not affected by treatment for parity-1 or parity-2 sows compared with controls. However, early-weaned sows at parities 3 through 6 treated with P.G. 600 had more (P < .06) total number born than controls (12.4 vs 10.6, respectively). Treatment with P.G. 600 improved reproductive function within specific parity and lactation length classification for sows weaned in the fall and winter.

Hermaphrodites in australian pigs. Occurrence and morphology in an abattoir survey.

In an abattoir study in Brisbane 19 hermaphrodites were found amongst 4000 pigs (0.475%). All pigs had female secondary genitalia with a tendency towards clitoridean enlargement and excessive erectile tissue below the vulva. The gonads had developed as testes, ovotestes or ovaries and were in the position of the ovaries in normal females. Ovaries were as in normal females, apart from a possibly higher incidence of cysts. Ovarian activity was reflected by the different cyclic stages of the normal uteri at the time of slaughter. In testes and ovotestes there was no spermatogenesis, but an increased proportion of interstitial cells of Leydig and a large amount of fat. It is estimated that in a herd of pigs about 1% of apparent females may be hermaphrodites, most of which are sterile. Economic loss may be caused if these animals are selected for breeding, apart from the possibility of other congenital abnormalities in herds with a high incidence of hermaphroditism. Tainting of meat products prepared from hermaphrodite pigs may also cause economic loss. It is pointed out that the phenotypic classification of hermaphrodites is of limited value and it is suggested that a pathogenetic classification should be established for domestic animals.

Phylogenetic relationships of functionally dioecious FICUS (Moraceae) based on ribosomal DNA sequences and morphology.

Figs (Ficus, Moraceae) are either monoecious or gynodioecious depending on the arrangement of unisexual florets within the specialized inflorescence or syconium. The gynodioecious species are functionally dioecious due to the impact of pollinating fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae) on the maturation of fig seeds. The evolutionary relationships of functionally dioecious figs (Ficus subg. Ficus) were examined through phylogenetic analyses based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and morphology. Forty-six species representing each monoecious subgenus and each section of functionally dioecious subg. Ficus were included in parsimony analyses based on 180 molecular characters and 61 morphological characters that were potentially informative. Separate and combined analyses of molecular and morphological data sets suggested that functionally dioecious figs are not monophyletic and that monoecious subg. Sycomorus is derived within a dioecious clade. The combined analysis indicated one or two origins of functional dioecy in the genus and at least two reversals to monoecy within a functionally dioecious lineage. The exclusion of breeding system and related characters from the analysis also indicated two shifts from monoecy to functional dioecy and two reversals. The associations of pollinating fig wasps were congruent with host fig phylogeny and further supported a revised classification of Ficus.

Canine brucellosis: newer knowledge.

Canine brucellosis is a worldwide disease of dogs characterized prinicpally by abortions in females and epididymitis and infertility in males. It originally was observed in the USA, but recently it has been discovered in Japan, Mexico, Peru, Germany and, possibly, in Brazil. It affects dogs of all breeds and has been diagnosed in breeding kennels and in stray dogs. Several human cases have occurred, with 6 being accidental infections by laboratory personnel. B. canis, like B. ovis, is naturally mucoid, lacking "S" antigens. Serological tests therefore are not appropriate to classification. On the basis of manometric technics, B. canis is similar to B. suis; nevertheless the host range excludes swine. Agreement on its taxonomic status is not universal, although it has been provisionally accepted by the Subcommittee on Taxonomy of Brucella as a new species. A brief review of salient characteristics of B. canis was presented, however the principal discussion focused on recently observed aspects of the immunopathogenesis of male infertility and reported the development of a rapid slide agglutination test, using as antigen a concentrated and stained (Rose Bengal dye) suspension of B. ovis.

Pea varieties resources in Russia in context to the situation in Western Europe.

The largest share of legumes grain production in Russia falls at peas and amounts to 75%. The pea is grown practically in all agricultural regions of Russia. The most favourable pea-growing regions are the forest-steppe zone of European part of Russia and Volga region. 84 varieties of pea are being included in the official "National List of the Breeding Achievements Permitted to Use in the Russian Federation" in 2001. 24 of these varieties correspond to the requirements for the most valuable food pea ones. The pea varieties especially suitable for food are identified by a special classification. 32.5% percent of a total area sown with the peas in Europe falls to Russia. Total peas production in Russia is 10.6% of a total European production.

MICE, a program to track and monitor animals in animal facilities.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of laboratories are using the mouse as a model system in developmental biology as well as in molecular biology. Surprisingly, most of these laboratories do not have reliable computerized systems to track these animals, and the few commercial solutions available are expensive. We thus developed MICE (Mouse Information and Classification Entity), a program aimed at facilitating the monitoring of animals in animal facilities. RESULTS: This program consists of a virtual facility in which scientists can perform all the tasks done in the real world (i.e., receiving animals, breeding them, preparing cage labels, etc.). Recording of each animal (birth date, cage number, ID number, tail analysis number, parents, genetic status, genetic background, etc.) enables reliable tracking. According to any parameter of interest, animals can then be identified, grouped, sorted, moved, and so forth. Crossings are automatically processed by the program. For example, new genetic backgrounds, generation number, and anticipated due dates are determined. The program also reminds the user when new births are expected and entering newborn animals only requires a few clicks. The genealogy of each animal can be determined in two different ways, one being the visualization of a genealogical tree from which information of ancestors can be retrieved. CONCLUSION: This standalone program, that will be distributed free of charge to academic laboratories requesting a license, represents a new and valuable tool for all animal facility users, and permits simple and reliable tracking and retrieving of animals.
