This paper analyzes the nine pillars of human dignity (sufficient food, potable water, shelter, sanitation, health services, healthy environment, education, employment and personal security), which humankind tries to establish by following nine approaches to reality (scientific, cultural, religious, ethical, economical, ecological, socio-critical, philosophical and political) in a world drastically changed by nine revolutions (demographic, scientific, technological, communication, global identity, environmental, contraceptive, reproductive health and gender equity). The author's generation participated in these revolutions and contributed to the global intellectual process by which gender equity and reproductive health assumed a central role in world affairs. A rapidly aging world population constitutes another major challenge. Its likely impact on the very fundaments of our future social, economical, health and even political infrastructures is--as yet--incompletely comprehended by the international community. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) has and will continue to have an indispensable role in assisting humankind to reach its ultimate goal : human dignity.

The Court held that the plaintiff, the owner of a business adjoining an abortion clinic, had no standing to challenge the Ontario Attorney General's decision to stay proceedings against the physicians operating the clinic. The Court ruled that the plaintiff had no genuine interest in the proceedings and that his rights had not been denied or infringed. Moreover, it found that he could not assert the rights of unborn children because unborn children have no rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 was one of the most comprehensive and flexible vehicles for regulation of artificial reproduction and embryology of its area. However, its serviceability has recently been brought into question by both the materialisation of unforeseen dilemmas and the response of legal actors to these dilemma's which has often been ethically and democratically deficient. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the reproach of the regulatory authority and judiciary to the use pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and cloning by cell nuclear replacement.

Historically, the combination of women's rights to care, population concerns and the development of female-oriented contraceptive methods resulted in family planning programs focusing on women's contraceptive needs and little else. The 1994 United Nations Population Conference in Cairo called for an expansion of programs to cover reproductive health in its broadest interpretation. As this concept has developed and been put into practice it has become evident that a key element in reproductive health services should be the inclusion of the sexually active couple.

The basal ganglia have been proposed as one of the neural correlates of timekeeping functions. Both encoding and memory retrieval components for time perception are impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of our study was to investigate in hemi-Parkinsonian patients the existence of a specific alteration in memory for time depending on the affected side, to better understand the contribution of the left or right basal ganglia circuits in different components of time perception. Right and left hemi-PD patients performed a time reproduction task in which they were required to reproduce in the same session short (5 s) and long (15 s) time intervals, in off- and on-therapy condition. While the right hemi-PD patients overestimated the shorter interval, only the left hemi-PD group showed the memory migration effect, overestimating the shorter and underestimating the longer time intervals. These results argue for a critical involvement of the right basal ganglia in memory retrieval for time intervals, in the range of seconds.
