[Obytin in the treatment of superficial skin mycoses].

Obytin (1% Cyclopyroxolamine) in the form of cream, a preparation of the firm Jugoremedija/Hoechst, was applied in the treatment of 33 patients with dermatophytic skin infections. The diseases were most frequently located in the intertriginous areas 19 (57%), somewhat less frequently on nude places of the skin 9 (27%), and on the hands and feet 5 (16%). The cream was applied twice daily for 28 days. Acute clinical symptoms of the disease disappeared rapidly under the influence of the preparation and disappeared completely after three weeks of treatment in 32 patients (97%); and four weeks after start of therapy mycology tests were negative in the same number of cases. Only 3% of patients had no evident changes during therapy. Obytin is one of the new topical antifungal agents with a wide spectrum of action and it can be used in all types of superficial dermatomycoses as well as in some bacterial infections. It is characterized by rapid onset of action. Side effects of local or systemic nature (irritative, alergic or toxic) had not been registered.

[Fungal flora in mycoses among the population of the south-eastern Poland 1978-1988].

In the years 1978-1988 a group of 2257 subjects was examined for the presence of fungal infection. In 785 cases positive results of cultures were obtained yielding 468 dermatophytes (60.1%) and 317 yeast-like fungi (39.9%). The most frequently isolated fungi were: Candida albicans (27.3%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes v. interdigitale (27.0%) and Trichophyton rubrum (20.6%). In the subgroup of dermatophytes anthropophilic fungi accounted for 87.5%.

[Computerized tomography diagnosis of opportunistic lung mycoses].

In 11 patients with opportunistic pneumo-mycosis, computed tomography revealed a predominantly nodular infiltration pattern of the lungs, which revealed particular features that showed a dependence on the species of pathogen involved and the stage of the disease. Computed tomography of the chest proved to be superior to conventional chest films in the clarification of unclear fungal pneumonia in patients on immunosuppressive treatment.

[Pulmonary mycoses and parasitosis].

Lungs can be the target of many fungal parasitic organisms. Some of them are specific to the lung (Pneumocystis); while others will migrate there in the course of their life cycle (Ascaris) or be caught in it (Paragonimus, Echinococcus). Sometimes, they also generate hypersensitivity reactions (fungi). In making a diagnosis one has to consider the present state of health or the disease history of the patient. A great number of parasites or mycetes are opportunist agents found in immuno-compromised patients. The epidemiological investigation giving details of a trip, even a long time ago, in a tropical region allows the suspicion of an imported parasitosis or an exotic mycosis. At present, we have on one hand, the mixing of populations, and on the other hand, many immuno-compromised situations which has given rise to a renewed interest in fungal and parasitic lung diseases.

[Treatment of nail mycoses].

Onychomycosis is defined as an infection of the nail unit by fungi. Four clinical types of onychomycoses are recognized by the manner in which the nail plate is invaded. A combined therapy with elimination of the nail by surgical extraction or a chemical onycholysis, a short systemic antifungal therapy and a topical treatment until the healthy nail has grown is recommended.
