Ovulatory shifts in human female ornamentation: near ovulation, women dress to impress.

Humans differ from many other primates in the apparent absence of obvious advertisements of fertility within the ovulatory cycle. However, recent studies demonstrate increases in women's sexual motivation near ovulation, raising the question of whether human ovulation could be marked by observable changes in overt behavior. Using a sample of 30 partnered women photographed at high and low fertility cycle phases, we show that readily-observable behaviors - self-grooming and ornamentation through attractive choice of dress - increase during the fertile phase of the ovulatory cycle. At above-chance levels, 42 judges selected photographs of women in their fertile (59.5%) rather than luteal phase (40.5%) as "trying to look more attractive." Moreover, the closer women were to ovulation when photographed in the fertile window, the more frequently their fertile photograph was chosen. Although an emerging literature indicates a variety of changes in women across the cycle, the ornamentation effect is striking in both its magnitude and its status as an overt behavioral difference that can be easily observed by others. It may help explain the previously documented finding that men's mate retention efforts increase as their partners approach ovulation.

Emergency pulpotomy: pain relieving effect with and without the use of sedative dressings.

Seventy-three teeth with acute irreversible pulpitis were subjected to emergency pulpotomies. After removal of the coronal portion of the pulp, a sterile cotton pellet or zinc oxide-eugenol cement was placed against the remaining pulp tissue. The cotton pellet was either dry or moistened with camphorated phenol, cresatin, eugenol, or isotonic saline. This gave six different groups of treatment following the pulpotomy. All teeth were sealed with zinc oxide-eugenol cement. By means of questionnaires, symptoms were recorded after the anesthetic effect was gone and also at 1, 7, and 30 days after treatment. A total of 70 patients (96%) reported pain relief. Three patients did not experience relief and returned for pulpectomy. After the first postoperative day, no pain was reported by any of the patients. The frequency of discomfort decreased from 11% 1 day postoperatively to 1% 30 days after the emergency treatment. There was no difference in recorded symptoms among the six treatment groups. Thus, removal of caries, pulpotomy, and sealing of the cavity apparently was a reliable means to relieve pain. The use of the various dressings did not contribute to the relief of pain.

Dentinal tubule penetration of root canal sealers after root canal dressing with calcium hydroxide.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dentinal tubule penetration of root canal sealers after root canal dressing with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). Forty-two single-rooted teeth were instrumented to size 60. Six teeth served as the control group, and the remaining teeth were assigned to two groups. Root canals of the first group were filled with the Ca(OH)2 paste; the second group was filled with TempCanal, and all were incubated for 7 days. The samples were either irrigated with only NaOCl or with EDTA, followed by NaOCl to remove Ca(OH)2. All of the teeth were obturated with CRCS, AH26, and Ketac Endo by a lateral condensation technique. The specimens were then kept at the same conditions for another 7 days, and then all of the roots were prepared for scanning electron microscopic evaluation. Scanning electron microscopic examination revealed that Ca(OH)2 was not completely removed from the root canal surfaces, and root canal sealers did not penetrate into the dentinal tubules when only NaOCl was used. EDTA followed by NaOCl irrigation resulted in complete removal of Ca(OH)2 and root canal sealers penetrated into the dentinal tubules.

Comparison of the antioxidant properties of wound dressing materials--carboxymethylcellulose, hyaluronan benzyl ester and hyaluronan, towards polymorphonuclear leukocyte-derived reactive oxygen species.

In chronic wounds, factors are released which perpetuate inflammatory processes, including polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN)-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide radical (O(2)*-) and hydroxyl radical (*OH) species. The glycosaminoglycan, hyaluronan, has established antioxidant properties towards ROS, although the antioxidant potential of wound dressing biomaterials, such as 75% benzyl esterified hyaluronan (BEHA) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMCH), are less characterised. This study compared the antioxidant properties of high and low molecular weight hyaluronan (HMWT HA and LMWT HA), BEHA and CMCH towards ROS, generated by stimulated PMN in vitro. The antioxidant capacities of each biomaterial were assessed by their inhibition of O(2)*- -induced cytochrome C reduction, generated via PMN stimulation by phorbol myristyl acetate (PMA); and their inhibition of *OH-induced 2-deoxy-D-ribose degradation, generated by PMA stimulated PMN in the presence of a ferric chloride-EDTA chelate. All biomaterials, except LMWT HA, possessed dose-dependent antioxidant properties against O(2)*-, BEHA having greatest antioxidant potential, followed by HMWT HA and CMCH. HMWT HA exhibited the highest dose-dependent antioxidant properties towards *OH, followed by BEHA and CMCH. LMWT HA demonstrated no antioxidant properties towards *OH. These antioxidant activities, particularly towards O(2)*-, may be beneficial in removing the initial source of ROS necessary for the secondary formation of *OH, implicated as a causal factor for the extensive metabolic alterations observed in chronic wounds.

Occurrence of Yersinia enterocolitica and Campylobacter spp. in slaughter pigs and consequences for meat inspection, slaughtering, and dressing procedures.

The purpose of the present investigation was to assess the occurrence of Yersinia enterocolitica and Campylobacter spp. in the lymphoid tissues and intestinal tract in pigs and the risk for contamination during the compulsory meat inspection procedures and the procedures during slaughtering and dressing. Another objective of the investigation was to compare traditional isolation methods, the use of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method (BUGS'n BEADS bacterial DNA isolation kit) and an ELISA method (VIDAS CAM) as tools in risk management in the slaughterhouse. The results indicate that the compulsory procedure for the incision of the submaxillary lymph nodes represents a cross-contamination risk for virulent Yersinia. In the screening of 97 animals in 1999, 5.2% of the samples were positive, and by the sampling of 24 samples in 2000-2001, 12.5% of the samples were positive. In the last case, Y. enterocolitica O:3 was found in the kidney region in one of the subsequent carcasses that was only touched by the meat inspection personnel before sampling. In addition, incision of the mesenteric lymph nodes might represent a cross-contamination risk since 8.3% of the samples were positive. The association between antibody titres and the occurrence of virulent yersiniae in the tonsils (21-18) was striking, with virulent yersiniae found in the tonsils in most pigs with high titres. The contents of the stomach, ileum, caecum, and colon also represent contamination risks for Y. enterocolitica O:3 if the slaughterhouse personnel cuts into the viscera with their knives by accident; the frequency of virulent Yersinia varied from 4.2% to 16.7% within these sections. Campylobacter was detected in the gastrointestinal tract of all pigs, and the high contamination of tonsils (66.7%) and intestinal tract (100%) might represent an occupational health hazard. There was no statistical difference between the traditional method for isolation of Y. enterocolitica [International Organization for Standardization, 1994. Microbiology-General Guidance for the Detection of Presumptive Pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica (ISO 10273). International Organization for Standardization, Genève, Switzerland (16 pp.)] and the BUGS'n BEADS detection method for virulent Y. enterocolitica. Likewise, there was no statistical difference between the traditional method for isolation of Campylobacter spp. [Nordic Committee on Food Analysis, 1990. Campylobacter jejuni/coli. Detection in Food. Method No. 119, 2nd ed. Nordic Committee on Food Analysis, Esbo (7 pp.)] and the BUGS'n BEADS detection method or the VIDAS CAM method for detection of Campylobacter spp.

Effect of application of cold dressings on the postoperative course in oral surgery.

The effect of external application of local cold on swelling, trismus, temperature and pain postoperatively in surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars was studied in a cross-over study comprising 45 patients. The patients were treated postoperatively with cold dressings after the first or the second operation. There were no significant differences in swelling, trismus, temperature or postoperative pain between the 2 groups of operations. It is concluded that the external application of cold after the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars does not appear to improve the postoperative course, either on a short or long term basis.

A comparison of the bioequivalence of 0.5% fenbendazole top dress pellets or 10% fenbendazole oral suspension against a spectrum of equine parasites.

A controlled test was conducted to assess the efficacy bioequivalence of a single dose of 0.5% fenbendazole (FBZ) top dress pellets to a 10% FBZ suspension formulation (Panacur suspension 10%, Hoechst Roussel Vet). Thirty horses with naturally-acquired parasite infections, in replicates of three, were used. Strongyle egg per gram counts were not significantly different (P>0.1) between groups pretreatment, but FBZ treated groups were significantly different from the control group post-treatment. At necropsy, which occurred seven to nine days post-treatment, two methods of nematode recovery were compared to assess whether a small aliquot can be used in a control test to determine efficacy against large as well as small strongyles. Both post mortem worm recovery techniques revealed similar efficacies of both formulations (>95%) against small and large strongyles, but large differences in the number of worms recovered. Six species of small strongyles comprised 96% of all the small strongyles recovered: Coronocyclus coronatus, Cylicocyclus insigne, Cylicostephanus longibursatus, Cylicocyclus brevicapsulatus, Cylicocyclus nassatus, and Cyathostomum catinatum. The results of this study demonstrated therapeutic bioequivalence between FBZ formulations and also the need to sample at least a 10% aliquot to accurately estimate number of large strongyles. No adverse reactions to treatment were detected.

Early tangential excision and skin grafting of moderate burns is superior to honey dressing: a prospective randomised trial.

METHODS: In this prospective trial, 50 burn patients were randomised to be treated either with early tangential excision and skin grafting or by the application of honey dressings, with delayed skin grafting as necessary. The 25 patients in the tangential excision (TE) group had burns of 23 +/- 4%, 12% of which was full thickness. The honey treated patients (HT), (N=25), had burns of 24 + 4%, 13% of which was full thickness. Seventeen of the TE patients were operated upon on day 3, the remainder before day 6 post burn. Eleven of the HT patients eventually required skin grafting. Cosmetic and functional results were assessed at 3 months post discharge. RESULTS: In the TE group, the skin grafting take rate was 99 +/- 3%. In the HT group, the graft take rate was 74 +/- 18% (P < 0.01). The mean percentage of blood volume replaced was 35 +/- 12% in TE patients vs. 21 +/- 15% in HT patients (P < 0.01). Only one TE patient died due to status asthmaticus, while there were 3 deaths, all from sepsis, in the HT patients. At 3 month follow-up, 92% of the TE patients had good to excellent functional and cosmetic results vs. 55% in HT patients, 3 of whom had significant contractures. CONCLUSION: Early tangential excision and skin grafting was clearly superior to expectant treatment using topical honey in patients with moderate burns in this randomised, prospective study performed at a General Hospital in the Indian subcontinent. The availability of suitable allogenic blood is a potential problem when TE is employed.

An alternative buildup material: combine dressing and liquid paraffin.

A tissue substitute of combine dressing (gauze and cottonwool) soaked with liquid paraffin was found to be a practical, easily manufactured and inexpensive buildup material for use in treating radiation therapy patients with electron and photon beams. Tissue equivalence was measured for electron energies of 6, 9, 12, and 16 MeV and photon energies of 6 MV and 10 MV delivered by a Varian 2100C linear accelerator. The solid water equivalence of the combine dressing/liquid paraffin material was approximately 1.2 times the geometric thickness of tissue substitute material across all energies.

Evaluation of the antibacterial potential of tetracycline or erythromycin mixed with calcium hydroxide as intracanal dressing against Enterococcus faecalis in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the intracanal antibacterial potential of tetracycline or erythromycin mixed with calcium hydroxide (CH) against enterococci in vivo. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty-five teeth in which enterococci were present were dressed for 1 month with either tetracycline (28 teeth) or erythromycin (27 teeth) mixed with CH. RESULTS: The tetracycline mixture was effective against enterococci in 22 teeth (79%). In 7 teeth, other microorganisms were recovered, resulting in a total antimicrobial effect of 54%. The corresponding results for erythromycin were 96% and 56%. CONCLUSIONS: The antimicrobial treatment of CH in combination with either erythromycin or tetracycline had a significant effect on enterococci, but the overall antimicrobial effect was relatively weak. Erythromycin mixed with CH seems to be a valuable option in the battle against monoinfections of enterococci.

Drug-induced pseudolymphoma and drug hypersensitivity syndrome (Drug Rash with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms: DRESS).

Since the first description by Saltzstein in 1959, the denomination of drug-induced pseudolymphoma was used to describe two cutaneous adverse drug reactions with a histological picture mimicking malignant lymphoma. On the basis of clinical presentation, this term includes two different patterns: (1) hypersensitivity syndrome which begins acutely in the first 2 months after the initiation of the drug and associates fever, a severe skin disease with characteristic infiltrated papules and facial edema or an exfoliative dermatitis, lymphadenopathy, hematologic abnormalities (hypereosinophilia, atypical lymphocytes) and organ involvement such as hepatitis, carditis, interstitial nephritis, or interstitial pneumonitis. The cutaneous histological pattern shows a lymphocytic infiltrate, sometimes mimicking a cutaneous lymphoma, and the mortality rate is about 10%. When organ involvement exists, corticosteroids are often prescribed with dramatic improvement. Relapses may occur. (2) drug-induced pseudolymphoma which has a more insidious beginning with nodules and infiltrated plaques appearing several weeks after the beginning of the drug without constitutional symptoms. A pseudolymphoma pattern is seen on cutaneous histological slides. Complete improvement is usual after drug withdrawal, but a delayed lymphoma is possible. To decrease the ambiguity of the denomination of hypersensitivity syndrome, we propose the term of DRESS (Drug Rash with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms).

Iodine released from the wound dressing Iodosorb modulates the secretion of cytokines by human macrophages responding to bacterial lipopolysaccharide.

Clinical data suggests that iodine released into the wound environment by Iodosorb may enhance the healing of chronic leg ulcers by a mechanism additional to its anti-bacterial activity. The macrophage is considered to play a central role in controlling wound healing and this study was designed to determine whether interaction with iodine could modulate macrophage cytokine output. The human macrophage cell line U937 was co-cultured with Iodosorb, Iodosorb conditioned medium or elemental iodine in the presence of optimal and sub-optimal stimulatory concentrations of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The concentration of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were assayed in the culture medium after 24 hr culture. Co-culture with 0.25% Iodosorb, Iodosorb conditioned medium or 20 micrograms/ml iodine enhanced TNF alpha secretion (48 +/- 3% cytotoxicity in L929 bioassay to 78 +/- 2% cytotoxicity, +/-SD) by U937 cells stimulated with sub-optimal concentrations of LPS (0.25 ng/ml) and inhibited secretion of IL-6 from cells stimulated with 10 ng/ml LPS (> 750 pg/ml to 267 +/- 52 pg/ml, +/-SD, n = 4). Immunohistological staining of sections prepared from biopsies of chronic leg ulcers indicated that the majority of macrophages present were negative for TNF alpha. Thus one potential mechanism of action of iodine released from Iodosorb used as a wound dressing is to provide a pro-inflammatory stimulus in the wound tissue by activation of the resident macrophage population. This would result in a localized production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and generate an influx of monocytes and T-lymphocytes into the wound that may trigger the wound into a healing phase.

A bacteriological survey of sanitary dressings, and development of an effective means for their disposal.

A microbiological survey of over 400 sanitary dressings is reported: large numbers of bacteria are present, including species indicative of faecal contamination. The need for an effective bactericide in chemical bin exchange systems is thus demonstrated. Screening trials of several candidate formulations have been undertaken: buffered sodium metabisulphite, releasing sulphur dioxide as a vapour-phase bactericide, has now been introduced as an effective bin exchnage system.

Observations on procedures for thawing and spit-roasting frozen dressed chickens, and post-cooking care and storage: with particular reference to food-poisoning bacteria.

A comparison was made of four methods of thawing frozen chickens and an average thaw time for each method was determined.Fully and partially thawed chickens, inoculated with salmonellas, Clostridium welchii and Staphylococcus aureus were cooked in a spit-roasting oven at different temperatures for different lengths of time. The chickens were examined freshly cooked and after storage under various conditions.Spit roasting fully thawed chickens until the outer skin was golden brown was sufficient heat-treatment to kill salmonellas and Staph. aureus but Cl. welchii could survive. Salmonellas could also survive if the chickens were not fully thawed before cooking.Incorrect storage after cooking was shown to encourage the growth of pathogens. The incidence of intestinal pathogens in frozen dressed chickens and environmental hazards in spit-roasting establishments were also studied. Of raw chickens examined 35% contained salmonellas (9 serotypes), 63% contained Cl. welchii and 63% Staph. aureus.
