The bioelectrical activity of the brain was studied in 86 children in the acute period of tick-borne encephalitis and during convalescence. A total of 183 electroencephalograms were analyzed, predominantly in the subclinical form of the disease (153). The acute stage was characterized by impairments in the bioelectrical activity of the brain in children of all age groups. The severity of the disorders and the form of the disease were closely correlated both according to the data of the baseline EEG and the findings of the functional tests. The changes were mostly manifest in a lowered threshold of cerebral excitability and, consequently, in increased convulsive readiness. In the course of the follow-up (2-3 years) these changes leveled off.
Twenty-five children aged 3 months to 13 years were examined electro-encephalographically. Most of the patients (20 of the 25) were young children (under 3 years of age) with the diagnosis of acute necrotic encephalitis. The characteristic changes of the EEG expressed in the form of cyclically arising asymmetric giant slow waves were established. The nature of the EEG was shown to correlate with the gravity of the clinical course. The data obtained may be used both diagnostically and prognostically.

Clinical and electrophysiological examinations of 255 children and adolescents with migraine were carried out. Some age peculiarities of the clinical picture and course of the disease were noted. As the treatment method electropuncture with the use of Soviet-made apparatus pep-1 was given to 80 patients. A favourable clinical effect was registered that correlated with the electrophysiological findings. Indications for, and contraindications to the use of electropuncture for treating migraine in children and adolescents are determined.
Affection of the stem structures in craniocerebral injury causes their irritation at different levels and of different degree, which determines the severity of the patient's clinical condition with the corresponding EEG changes. Irritation of a high degree induces functional block of the stem structures which hinders the clinical and EEG manifestations of the local symptoms. The therapeutic measures should be aimed at removing the causes of brain stem affection and at reducing the degree of irritation of the median structures. The EEG facilitates the application of purposeful pathogenetic treatment of patients with cranial and cerebral trauma.

Neuronal rhythmic burst activity was recorded extracellularly in the intact septum (34 cells) and in septum deprived of hippocampal connections (100 cells) during electrical stimulation of various neocortical areas, midbrain and pontine reticular formation, and medial forebrain bundle (MFB) in the preoptic area. All structures tested influenced burst production in septal cells. Cortical influences might phasically trigger or regularize theta-activity, but more often they suppressed and desynchronized it. The reticular stimulation tonically increased frequency, regularity, and density of the theta-bursts. MFB influences were similar, but less effective. Increasing the intensity of the stimulating current resulted in a logarithmic increase of theta-burst frequency up to the upper limit of the EEG theta-frequencies (9-10 Hz). Short electrical or sensory stimulation reset the burst activity so that the series of bursts followed each other for several seconds in a stable pattern, which was reproduced by each next application of the same stimulus. Regulation of the theta-rhythm by direct influences upon various types of septal units without hippocampal involvement is discussed.

It was shown in experiments on cats under nembutal anesthesia that creation of a hyperactive focus with a high excitation level in the orbital or coronary cortex of one hemisphere and of a number of foci in the neocortex of the contralateral hemisphere led to formation of a functional complex working in a unified regimen determined by the hyperactive focus activity. The latter plays the role of a determinant structure. Suppression of the determinant focus with nembutal was followed by a decay of the epileptic complex. Section of the corpus callossum (its rostral part) led to derangement in synch ronization of the work between the determinant and other epileptic activity foci. The results of investigation confirmed the conception on the role of the determinant structure in the nervous system activity.

Many experimental data point to a multioscillatory modulation of the CNS function. It covers coordinating stabilization of vital time structures, the zero frequency characteristics of neurones and receptors during expansion of their action range, the internal clock and central time counter. This involves triggering processes and sequential order of elementary and cognitive operations as well as the storage of information. The synaptic-connectionistic hypothesis is opposed by the oscillatory resonance theory, in which intracellular oscillators and those connected to the membrane being respondible for extrasynaptic changes in the transmission characteristics of the neurone.
