In a retrospective series of 40 appendiceal tumours occurring over a 10-year period, 30 were carcinoid tumours of classical histological pattern, five were adenocarcinomas, and two were tumours intermediate in pattern between carcinoid and carcinoma. The remaining three tumours were secondaries from primary colonic tumours. The implications of the findings are discussed.

This report describes a case of mucinous carcinoma and Müllerian metaplasia arising within an appendiceal duplication cyst found incidentally during an emergency Caesarian section. Intestinal duplication cysts are rare and although there are occasional reports of malignant transformation, this is the first case where Müllerian metaplasia was found concurrently with a malignancy. There was no previous history of endometriosis and no other abnormalities were found at surgery. Treatment included surgical excision. The patient is alive and well two years after removal of the cyst.

A patient presented with tracking of pus from a chronic appendiceal abscess along the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh. In the absence of such a tunnel, which is only present in a small proportion of individuals, the infection would have resulted in a subinguinal psoas abscess. Although pus may conceivably extend in any direction, the reason for this unusual complication remains poorly understood.

The skin temperature in the right and left iliac fossae was recorded in 100 patients who were referred with a provisional diagnosis of acute appendicitis. This was not found to be a reliable aid in diagnosis of acute appendicitis nor an indicator to the need for surgery in patients with right iliac fossa pain.
