Stagnation pressure of imploding shells and ignition energy scaling of inertial confinement fusion targets.

The stagnation pressure p(s) of imploding cylindrical ( n = 2) and spherical ( n = 3) shells is found to scale as p(s)/p(0)~M(2(n+1)/(gamma+1))(0), where M0 is the Mach number of the imploding shell and p(0) its maximum pressure. The result holds approximately for Mach numbers in the range 2<M0<25 relevant for inertial confinement fusion capsules and is of key importance for their ignition energy scaling. It is derived analytically on the basis of similarity solutions for an ideal gas with adiabatic exponent gamma.

Real-time measurement of the orientational dynamics of aqueous solvation shells in bulk liquid water.

We present a study of the orientational dynamics of aqueous solvation shells of halogenic anions in bulk water solution with femtosecond two-color midinfrared spectroscopy. These orientational dynamics have time constants between 2.5 and 12 ps, depending on the type of anion and the temperature. We find that the solvation shell of the larger ion I- shows faster dynamics than that of the smaller ions Cl- and Br-.

Shell filling and exchange coupling in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We report the characterization of electronic shell filling in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes by low-temperature transport measurements. Nanotube quantum dots with average conductance approximately (1-2)e(2)/h exhibit a distinct four-electron periodicity for electron addition as well as signatures of Kondo and inelastic cotunneling. The Hartree-Fock parameters that govern the electronic structure of metallic nanotubes are determined from the analysis of transport data using a shell-filling model that incorporates the nanotube band structure and Coulomb and exchange interactions.

Shell structure and pairing for interacting fermions in a trap.

The shell structures for weakly interacting fermions in harmonic oscillator traps at zero temperature undergo several transitions depending on the number of particles in the trap and their interaction strength. Calculations of the one and two-particle spectra give the pairing gaps, and the many particle state is constructed by the seniority scheme. For sufficiently few particles, N less than or similar to 10(4), the pairing field exceeds the mean-field splitting of single particle levels at the Fermi surface and the greater number of almost degenerate states due to the SU(3) symmetry in the harmonic oscillator shell lead to supergaps. Deformation and rotation are also discussed.

Gamow shell model description of neutron-rich nuclei.

This work presents the first continuum shell-model study of weakly bound neutron-rich nuclei involving multiconfiguration mixing. For the single-particle basis, the complex-energy Berggren ensemble representing the bound single-particle states, narrow resonances, and the nonresonant continuum background is taken. Our shell-model Hamiltonian consists of a one-body finite potential and a zero-range residual two-body interaction. It is demonstrated that the residual interaction coupling to the particle continuum is important; in some cases, it can give rise to the binding of a nucleus.

Effects of fuel-shell mix upon direct-drive, spherical implosions on OMEGA.

Fuel-shell mix and implosion performance are studied for many capsule types in direct-drive experiments at OMEGA. The amount of mixing and the size of the mix region are inferred from charged-particle spectrometry data and confirmed with an experimentally constrained model. Measured yields and convergence ratios CR fall short of one-dimensional predictions, especially for low capsule fill pressures. CR is approximately 11 for pressures from 3 to 15 atm, in contrast to predictions of approximately 25 for 3 atm and approximately 12 for 15 atm. The performance shortfalls are likely to be caused by fuel-shell mix.

Thermal quenching of electronic shells and channel competition in cluster fission.

Experimental and theoretical studies of fission of doubly charged Li, Na, and K clusters in the low-fissility regime reveal the strong influence of electronic shell effects on the fission products. The electronic entropy controls the quenching of the shell effects and the competition between magic-fragment channels, leading to a transition from favored channels of higher mass symmetry to the asymmetric channel involving the trimer cation at elevated temperatures.

Extreme superheating and supercooling of encapsulated metals in fullerenelike shells.

Nanometer-sized tin and lead crystals exhibit drastically altered melting and solidification behavior when encapsulated in fullerenelike graphitic shells. The melting transitions of encapsulated Sn and Pb nanocrystals are shown in an in situ electron microscopy study to occur at unexpectedly high temperatures, significantly higher than the melting point of the corresponding bulk materials. Atomistic simulations are used to show that the driving force for superheating is a pressure buildup of up to 3 GPa, that prevails inside graphitic shells under electron irradiation.

Neutrino-12C scattering in the Ab initio shell model with a realistic three-body interaction.

We investigate cross sections for neutrino-12C exclusive scattering and for muon capture on 12C using wave functions obtained in the ab initio no-core shell model. In our parameter-free calculations with basis spaces up to the 6 variant Planck's over 2pi Omega we show that realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, like, e.g., the CD-Bonn, underpredict the experimental cross sections by more than a factor of 2. By including a realistic three-body interaction, Tucson-Melbourne TM'(99), the cross sections are enhanced significantly and a much better agreement with experiment is achieved. At the same time, the TM'(99) interaction improves the calculated level ordering in 12C. The comparison between the CD-Bonn and the three-body calculations provides strong confirmation for the need to include a realistic three-body interaction to account for the spin-orbit strength in p-shell nuclei.

Magic polyicosahedral core-shell clusters.

A new family of magic cluster structures is found by genetic global optimization, whose results are confirmed by density functional calculations. These clusters are Ag-Ni and Ag-Cu nanoparticles with an inner Ni or Cu core and an Ag external shell, as experimentally observed for Ag-Ni, and present a polyicosahedral character. The interplay of the core-shell chemical ordering with the polyicosahedral structural arrangement gives high-symmetry clusters of remarkable structural, thermodynamic, and electronic stability, which can have high melting points (they melt higher than pure clusters of the same size), large energy gaps, and (in the case of Ag-Ni) nonzero magnetic moments.

Effective charges in the fp shell.

Following the heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction 32S+24Mg at 95 MeV beam energy the lifetimes of analogue states in the T(z)=+/-1/2 A=51 mirror nuclei 51Fe and 51Mn have been measured using the Cologne plunger device coupled to the GASP gamma-ray spectrometer. The deduced B(E2;27/2(-)-->23/2(-)) values afford a unique opportunity to probe isoscalar and isovector polarization charges and to derive effective proton and neutron charges, epsilon(p) and epsilon(n), in the fp shell. A comparison between the experimental results and several different large-scale shell-model calculations yields epsilon(p) approximately 1.15e and epsilon(n) approximately 0.80e.

Dynamics and control of shock shells in the coulomb explosion of very large deuterium clusters.

The explosion dynamics of very large (approximately 10(6)-10(7) atoms) deuterium clusters irradiated by ultraintense laser pulses (I approximately 10(18) W/cm(2)) is analyzed self-consistently with one-to-one three-dimensional and two-dimensional fully relativistic particle-in-cell simulations. Small-scale shock shells in the expanding ion cloud are observed. A technique to induce the formation of large shock shells inside a single cluster, increasing the probability of intracluster nuclear reactions, is proposed and demonstrated.

Discrete and continuum spectra in the unified shell model approach.

A new version of the nuclear shell model unifies the consideration of the discrete spectrum, where the results reproduce the standard shell model, and continuum. The ingredients of the method are the non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, energy-dependent one-body and two-body decay amplitudes, and self-consistent treatment of thresholds. The results for helium and oxygen isotope chains reproduce the data well.

Fully coupled channel approach to doubly strange s-shell hypernuclei.

We describe ab initio calculations of doubly strange, S = -2, s-shell hypernuclei (4(LambdaLambda)H, 5LambdaLambda)H, 5(LambdaLambda)He, and 6(LambdaLambda)He) as a first attempt to explore the few-body problem of the full-coupled channel scheme for these systems. The wave function includes LambdaLambda, LambdaSigma, NXi, and SigmaSigma channels. Minnesota NN, D2' YN, and simulated YY potentials based on the Nijmegen hard-core model are used. Bound-state solutions of these systems are obtained. We find that a set of phenomenological B8B8 interactions among the octet baryons in S = 0,-1, and -2 sectors, which is consistent with all of the available experimental binding energies of S = 0,-1, and -2 s-shell (hyper)nuclei, can predict a particle stable bound state of 4(LambdaLambda)H. For 5(LambdaLambda)H and 5(LambdaLambda)He, LambdaN-SigmaN and XiN-LambdaSigma potentials significantly affect the net LambdaLambda-NXi coupling, and a large Xi probability is obtained even for a weaker LambdaLambda-NXi potential.

Shell model description of the decay out of the superdeformed band of 36Ar.

Large scale shell model calculations in the valence space spanned by two major oscillator shells (sd and pf) describe simultaneously the superdeformed excited band of 36Ar and its spherical ground state. We explain the appearance of this superdeformed band at low excitation energy as a consequence of the very large quadrupole correlation energy of the configurations with many particles and many holes (np-nh) relative to the normal filling of the spherical mean field orbits (0p-0h). We study the mechanism of mixing between the different configurations to understand why the superdeformed band survives and how it finally decays into the low-lying spherical states via the indirect mixing of the 0p-0h and 4p-4h configurations.

Size dependence of the thin-shell model for carbon nanotubes.

There has been much debate on the choice for the representative wall thickness for the thin-shell model, although this model has demonstrated remarkable success in capturing many types of behavior of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), in determining the buckling strains under compression, torsion, and bending, in particular. This analysis, using the Tersoff-Brenner potential and ab initio calculations, shows that the elasticity of the model thin shell evolves from isotropic to square symmetric with the decreasing tube diameter, leading to significant diameter dependence for all the elastic moduli and the representative wall thickness. Furthermore, the elastic moduli of multiwalled carbon nanotubes of diameters up to 10 nm are also size dependent.

Gamow-Teller strengths in the A = 14 multiplet: a challenge to the shell model.

A new experimental approach to the famous problem of the anomalously slow Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in the beta decay of the A=14 multiplet is presented. The GT strength distributions to excited states in 14C and 14O were studied in high-resolution (d,2He) and (3He,t) charge-exchange reactions on 14N. No-core shell-model calculations capable of reproducing the suppression of the beta decays predict a selective excitation of Jpi=2+ states. The experimental confirmation represents a validation of the assumptions about the underlying structure of the 14N ground state wave function. However, the fragmentation of the GT strength over three 2+ final states remains a fundamental issue not explained by the present no-core shell model using a 6homega model space, suggesting possibly the need to include cluster structure in these light nuclei in a consistent way.

Low-energy nondipole effects in molecular nitrogen valence-shell photoionization.

Observations are reported for the first time of significant nondipole effects in the photoionization of the outer-valence orbitals of diatomic molecules. Measured nondipole angular-distribution parameters for the 3sigma(g), 1pi(u), and 2sigma(u) shells of N2 exhibit spectral variations with incident photon energies from thresholds to approximately 200 eV which are attributed via concomitant calculations to particular final-state symmetry waves arising from (E1)multiply sign in circle(M1,E2) radiation-matter interactions first-order in photon momentum. Comparisons with previously reported K-edge studies in N2 verify linear scaling with photon momentum, accounting in part for the significantly enhanced nondipole behavior observed in inner-shell ionization at correspondingly higher momentum values in this molecule.
