[An attempt to use graph theory for the description of demographic events].

"The possibility is discussed of using graphs to describe a sequence of demographic events such as births, marriages and deaths. Among all sequences of demographic events those with perturbations are singled out. The following perturbations are defined: childlessness, premature termination of childbearing caused by the death of the female or termination of marriage due to divorce or death of spouse, remarriage of females and pre-marital births." [Place of residence and registration: problems and comparability in the classification of births].

In 1973, the classification method for births in Mexico was changed from place of registration to place of mother's residence. "The objective of this work is to analyze how the place of 'customary residence of the mother' has been registered and to determine if the change of classification has some effect [on] the comparability of the information about births in different states. The information analyzed is divided into two periods, according to the way in which it was obtained and processed and the institution responsible for its publication." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Use of vital statistics in maternal mortality prevention programs].

"In the first part of the article the vital statistics system of the Republic of Argentina is presented, highlighting its characteristics as a data source, the integrity of its death records, the quality of the medical certification as to the cause of death by means of indirect indicators and the under registration of maternal causes. In the second part, the results of a research on maternal mortality carried out in the Federal Capital from 1987 to 1989, which was later extended to other jurisdictions of the country (Cordoba, Tucuman and Corrientes), is synthesized.... The principal objectives were...to know the real structure of maternal mortality in the Federal Capital and to identify the factors associated with it, in order to orient the activity of the health services and reduce these deaths." A generalized stable model with fluctuating vital rates.

The amenability of the stable population model to certain situations where net maternity function need not be invariant over time is exemplified by relating the changes in fertility at 2 time points by the equation m(a,t) = m(a) h(a,t)/h(t) where the form of h(t) is general and can be determined based on observed birth trajectories. Using the extended form of Easterlin's hypothesis, h(t) is taken as the reciprocal of NRR at t. The model is then applied to project NRR.

[Statistics on medical cause of death: historical coordinates, current tools].

"This work places the production of death causes statistics and its problems in the 19th century, with the appearance of modern statistics....[The author discusses ways] to make the most of the information being analyzed (studies of multiple causes), to improve the quality of medical performance, and to eliminate the variability produced by the codification process." The register-based system of demographic and social statistics in Denmark.

"Denmark has developed a statistical system where a large portion of official statistics is based on administrative registers. Population and Housing Censuses have been replaced by register based statistics since 1981. The key of the system is the unique Person Number used in all public administrations. A large number of registers is used as sources and is linked together in order to compile the best estimates of the statistical concepts. This allows for high quality statistics that are timely, consistent and well-suited for longitudinal studies. Problems of quality may arise from changes in the legislation or in the registers. A strong data protection policy is necessary in order to preserve the system."
