Proctologic disorders in sex deviates; a study of sixty-eight cases of sodomy.

Sixty-eight patients, 50 of them in penal institutions, who practiced passive sodomy were studied by interview and examination with regard to type of homosexuality, appearance, age at onset, frequency of practice, techniques, and proctologic findings.A high incidence of anal cryptitis was observed. A sign observable on digital examination, possibly peculiarly indicative of the practice of sodomy, was noted in many cases. Particular care is needed in the examination and treatment of anorectal diseases in sodomists and certain precautions must be taken as to hospital accommodations.

[How can one achieve compliance?--On the after-care of psychiatric patients after clinic discharge].

For 384 of 558 hospitalized psychiatric patients who were discharged within six months and for whom it was possible to plan aftercare, compliance was controlled by a phone call three months after discharge at the institution or practice to which the patient had been directed. Eighty percent of the ambulatory patients complied (schizophrenic patients: 84%). After three months 70 percent of the compliers still were in treatment. The hospital's arranging an appointment for the patient had the strongest influence on compliance. The success of this strategy is confirmed by the literature.

[The technic of esophageal extirpation with one-stage esophagoplasty using a stomach tube].

The article deals with the technical aspects of operation for extirpation of the esophagus through a cervico-abdominal approach in carcinoma (133 operations) and benign esophageal strictures (117 operations) with one-stage plastics by means of an isoperistaltic tube formed from the greater curvature of the stomach. The relative safety (2.8% of patients died) and high efficacy of the described operation allow it to be recommended for wide introduction into the practice of institutions engaged in surgery of the esophagus.

A collaborative system-wide response to influenza outbreak management in Saskatoon Health Region.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the benefits of a regional, collaborative, system-wide approach to influenza outbreak management. PARTICIPANTS: Senior management representatives from affected parts of the Regional Health Authority. SETTING: Saskatoon Health Region. INTERVENTION: Public Health proactively engaged a broad-based, multidisciplinary planning/management group to minimize the effect of the influenza outbreak, and institute best practice in prevention and outbreak management system-wide for the future. OUTCOMES: Earlier recognition and faster resolution of influenza outbreaks, fewer outbreaks, reduced pressure on acute care, greater compliance with amantadine prophylaxis, and improved immunization rates in seniors and health care workers. CONCLUSION: While many of these interventions and best practices have been recommended by individual sectors, when Public Health takes a system-wide approach facilitated by regionalization, it results in optimized planning, co-ordination, evaluation and successful outcomes.
