Placental calcium pump: clinical-based evidence.

Placenta can be considered as a pump of calcium necessary for the normal development of the fetus. We believe that the location of this pump is in the placental basement membrane. The calcification of this membrane has been described only in cases of in utero fetal death. In this study we describe for the first time a case of placental calcification in a living fetus. The fetus of a normal 21-year-old pregnant woman showed heart abnormalities but the genetic analysis showed a normal male karyotype. The histology of the placenta demonstrated multiple intravillous linear and granular calcific incrustations The hemtoxylin/eosin stain of the sections revealed basement membrane calcific incrustations and intravillous calcium deposits. We postulate that the fetal circulation in the villi was impaired and the calcium that reached the villi from the mother was deposited at this level.

Clinical results of Perftoran application: present and future.

Clinical experience of Perftoran (commercial drug of low concentrated perfluorocheminal emulsion) applications is presented in some statistical data and in brief analysis of clinical trials and following clinical studies described in the Russian scientific literature. Observed data allow us to suppose that Perftoran facilitates oxygen delivery together with remaining red blood cells at blood replacements and will have more wider area for application than just a blood substitute. Its infusion alleviates symptoms of ischemia at different types of occlusion vessels disease, improves grafting in plastic surgery, diminishes inflammation and prevents rejection of transplants, activates detoxication functions of liver, inhibits retro-virus infection development. Local PF applications is able to accelerate wounds and ulcers healing.

Iatrogenic choroidal neovascularization occurring in patients undergoing macular surgery.

PURPOSE: To report three cases of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) that occurred following surgical disruption of Bruch membrane during macular surgery. METHODS: A retrospective case series was compiled. Macular translocation surgery with punctate retinotomy was performed in two patients for subfoveal CNV, and pars plana vitrectomy with epiretinal membrane (ERM) peeling was performed in one patient for idiopathic ERM. RESULTS: CNV developed at a site of subretinal cannulation in two cases of macular translocation, and at a site of inadvertent injury to Bruch membrane with a vitreoretinal pick in the one case that underwent ERM peeling. CONCLUSIONS: These cases underscore the need to monitor breaks in Bruch membrane for CNV following macular surgery.

DNA mapping using microfluidic stretching and single-molecule detection of fluorescent site-specific tags.

We have developed a rapid molecular mapping technology--Direct Linear Analysis (DLA)--on the basis of the analysis of individual DNA molecules bound with sequence-specific fluorescent tags. The apparatus includes a microfluidic device for stretching DNA molecules in elongational flow that is coupled to a multicolor detection system capable of single-fluorophore sensitivity. Double-stranded DNA molecules were tagged at sequence-specific motif sites with fluorescent bisPNA (Peptide Nucleic Acid) tags. The DNA molecules were then stretched in the microfluidic device and driven in a flow stream past confocal fluorescence detectors. DLA provided the spatial locations of multiple specific sequence motifs along individual DNA molecules, and thousands of individual molecules could be analyzed per minute. We validated this technology using the 48.5 kb lambda phage genome with different 8-base and 7-base sequence motif tags. The distance between the sequence motifs was determined with an accuracy of +/-0.8 kb, and these tags could be localized on the DNA with an accuracy of +/-2 kb. Thus, DLA is a rapid mapping technology, suitable for analysis of long DNA molecules.

Compulsory sterilisation in Sweden.

In the Fall of 1997 the leading Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, created a media hype over the Swedish policy of compulsory sterilisation that had been in operation between 1935 and 1975. In the discussion that followed, the moral condemnation of our medical past was unanimous. However, the reasons for rejecting what had gone on were varied and mutually inconsistent. Three strands of criticism were common: the argument from autonomy, the argument from caution, and the argument from biological scepticism. In the paper it is argued that what point of departure you choose in your criticism of the past should be of consequence also for your ideas about present and future medical practice. In particular, if you rely on the argument from autonomy, you should be prepared to accept a liberal (present and future) use of reproductive techniques.
