[Study on the Eu-containing coordination polymer. I. Structural characterization of Eu (III)-thienyltrifluroacetone-poly (styrene-acrylic acid)].

Three samples (a), (b) and (c) of luminescent Eu-containing copolymer (NaEu(III)-TTA-PSAA) were synthesized through the reaction of copolymer of acrylic acid and styrene (Mw = 3000) with metalorganic complex (NaEu(TTA)4) obtained from Eu and thienyltrifluroacetone. These samples of coordination polymers were characterized by FTIR, UV and XPS, and their composition and structures were determined. The results of electrical conductivity methods and elemental analysis indicated that there were different compositions and structures of these coordination polymers in different pH. The results of elemental analysis also showed that the content of Eu3+ in sample (a), (b) and (c) was 11.89%, 12.55% and 13.41%, respectively.

Variation in blood flow of supporting tissue during use of mandibular complete dentures with hard acrylic resin base and soft relining: a preliminary study.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the influence of hard and resilient polymerized acrylic resin base materials on the blood flow of the supporting underlying mucosa of mandibular denture wearers during different denture-wearing periods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Measurements were carried out on 20 complete denture wearers, 10 with hard bases and 10 with soft ones. The mucosal blood flow underlying the dentures was measured bilaterally in the canine and molar regions using a laser Doppler flowmeter. Baseline measurements were performed before denture wearing and after the dentures were worn for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. RESULTS: Mean blood flow to the mucosa after 1 week was significantly lower in the measured regions than that obtained before the dentures were worn. Blood flow in the canine region returned to almost normal levels 6 months after beginning to wear complete dentures. However, blood flow in the molar region of the denture wearers in the hard base group increased after 6 months, whereas blood flow values did not return to the levels recorded before denture insertion in the soft lining group. CONCLUSION: It appears that wearing dentures hinders blood flow to denture-supporting tissues, even when soft liners are used.

The effects of drug delivery via hydrophilic acrylic (hydrogel) intraocular lens systems on the epithelial cells in culture.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Secondary posterior subcapsular opacification is still among the most important complications after phacoemulsification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was designed to assess the inhibitory effects of drugs delivered via hydrophilic acrylic (hydrogel) intraocular lens (IOL) systems in vitro. Lens epithelial cells were collected from albino rabbits. The following seven groups of hydrogel IOLs were prepared: untreated IOLs and IOLs infiltrated with diclofenac sodium, tranilast, mitomycin C, colchicines, 5-fluorouracil, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. The IOLs were fixed to a Cell Culture Insert; they were then bathed and incubated in minimum essential medium containing cultured lens epithelial cells. Subsequently, a comparative analysis of the cells adhering to the collagen membrane and the lens surfaces was conducted. RESULTS: Adhesion of lens epithelial cells to the lens surfaces and the collagen membrane was observed in the control group. However, only slight cellular adhesion was found on the surfaces of the IOLs and on the collagen membrane in the treated IOL groups. CONCLUSION: Use of hydrogel IOLs infiltrated with drugs was associated with inhibition of posterior subcapsular opacification in vitro.

Dimensional contour stability of acrylic resin bases for complete dentures before and after water sorption.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the dimensional contour variations of acrylic resin denture bases before and after storage in water. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The fit of 40 bases was evaluated by measuring the thickness of a layer made with silicone placed between the bases and the casts. The measurements were repeated on a new set of silicone layers after having stored the bases in water for 42 days. RESULTS: Significant differences were found both for the maxillary and the mandibular bases. CONCLUSION: Water sorption had an important effect on the contour of the prosthetic bases.

[The study of adhesion of Candida albicans to the selected acrylic resins].

The study has been performed on 3 acrylic resins used to fabricate removable dentures. Aim of the study was to detect possible differences in Candida albicans' adhesion within particular materials. Polished and non-polished samples were made, than these samples were sunk in precipitates containing Candida albicans material. Adhesion of Candida albicans to the surface of the materials occured within a concentration of 10. After 24 hours of incubation differences were found concerning the number of the plate cultures. Most of all plate cultures were observed on Lucitone 199, fewer on Zhermacryl, the poorest one was found on Palaxpress resin. Considerable number of plate cultures occured on non-polished samples relating to polished ones. After 48 hours of incubation further development of Candida albicans took place, with differences concerning various materials.

Time related influence of alpha-mercapto-beta-(2-furyl)acrylic acid (MFA) in cadmium toxicity.

The effect of alpha-mercapto-beta-(2-furyl) acrylic acid (MFA, 200 mg/kg, oral) administered 30 min or 24 h post cadmium (1 mg/kg, i.p.) exposure on cadmium toxicity, was investigated in rats. The Cd induced hepatic metallothionein was reduced by MFA treatment parallel to the depletion of hepatic Cd. However, in renal tissue, MFA caused only redistribution of metal from the particulate to the soluble fraction. Hepatic and renal Zn and renal Cu were significantly increased on Cd exposure. MFA therapy, however, lowered the hepatic Zn and increased the renal Cu levels. The action of MFA appears to be via metal chelation rather than by MT induction.

[The determination of the porosity of a basic acrylic plastic by mercury porometry].

A method for estimation of pore sizes in acrylic plastic dentures is described. Size-distribution of pores may be a very informative characteristic of not only strength, esthetic, and hygienic characteristics of dentures, but an indicator of a plastic polymerization process in various humidity and temperature conditions.

Assessment of perineal floor function: electromyography with acrylic plug surface electrodes in nulliparous women.

A new technique using acrylic plug surface electrodes was employed to record electromyographic activity in the musculature surrounding the rectum and vagina. Forty-one asymptomatic nulliparous women were tested. The group had a wide range of normal values. When eight women were chosen at random for a second testing session, intra-class correlation coefficients to compare readings between the two sessions ranged from 0.76-0.97, indicating adequate reliability. No demographic factor correlated with the voltage generated in these women.

[Critical evaluation of an acrylic partial denture].

Removable partial denture with a rigid metal construction meets the three main requirements of the up-to-date prosthodontics, i.e. properly directed chewing forces through accurate proprioceptive control of the masticatory muscles and preservation of the healthy periodontal tissues. Because of its flexibility the acrylic partial denture does not fulfill the above mentioned criteria so it can be, except in particular clinical indications, considered as a temporary and transitional prosthodontic treatment.

Reinforcement of acrylic resin denture base with a Ni-Cr alloy plate.

A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the strengthening effect of a Ni-Cr metal plate on an acrylic resin test specimen. Test specimens were retained using a mechanical method and adhesion with 4-META resin. Three positions of the metal plate were evaluated: on the compression surface, on the tension surface, and in the middle layer. A three-point bend test was used to compare physical properties of the specimens with metal-plate reinforcement to a resin specimen without reinforcement. No advantage was derived from placing the metal plate in the center of the resin. Both methods of retention produced improved physical properties when placed on either the compressive or tensile side, but the greatest advantages were gained when an adhesive-retained plate was placed on the side in tension.

Use of the acid-etch technique to maintain antimicrobial-containing acrylic resin strips in situ.

A technique that utilizes acid-etched composite resin to maintain antimicrobial-containing acrylic resin strips in situ is described. The advantage of this technique is that placement of a periodontal pack is unnecessary, so control of supragingival plaque is not hindered at the site of the local antimicrobial delivery. The technique described may improve the effectiveness and the clinical acceptability of local antimicrobials in the treatment of periodontal disease.

[Effect of temperature during polymerization on mechanical properties of acrylic resin].

Mechanical properties of heat curing acrylic resin obtained by polymerization for long period of heating at a temperature lower than conventional temperatures were examined. The mechanical properties of the resin were lower than those of the resin cured at 100 degrees C. The results of high performance liquid chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry suggested that the poor mechanical properties were due to significant amounts of residue monomer and benzoyl peroxide in the resin, but is not to changes molecular weight.

[Percutaneous acrylic vertebroplasty as a treatment of vertebral angioma as well as painful and debilitating diseases].

Although vertebral hemangiomas are regarded as stable vascular malformations, a number of them progresses and may cause complications involving the cord or the nerve roots. In order to prevent this evolution, vertebral consolidation can be achieved with the percutaneous injection of acrylic cement into the angiomatous vertebra. The preventive effect of this procedure is often combined with relief from vertebral pain. This observation allowed extending the scope of application of this method to other painful spinal lesions such as osteoporosis and certain types of tumors.
