Recreational bicycling and injury to the external iliac artery.
Because the bony girdle of the pelvis protects the external iliac artery except where it enters the femoral canal, reports of blunt injury to this artery are rare. Emphasizing the importance of a thorough physical examination and judicious use of angiography, this case study discusses the diagnosis and treatment of an isolated external iliac artery injury rendered by a bicycle handlebar, a previously unreported cause of this type of injury.
[Recreation of tissue--the plastic surgeon's spring-board in to the 21st century].
During recent years, a new field has appeared, in which the principles of life sciences and engineering are applied to the development of methods of regenerating human tissue and organs. Since the emergence of this interdisciplinary field, plastic surgeons have been deeply involved in its development, both in the early stages and in introducing the methods into clinical practice. The article consists in discussion of the possibilities these methods offer and the impact they may have on the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Gender and competitive motivation: from the recreation center to the Olympic arena.
Gender makes a difference; we do gender in sport. Gender is a pervasive social force in society, and the sport world reflects society's gender hierarchy in the extreme. Gender is so ingrained in our sport structure and practice that we cannot simply treat all athletes the same. Nor can we assume that male and female athletes are dichotomous opposites, and treat all males one way and all females another way. Biology is part of the mix, but biology is not destiny. Gender is a dynamic, social influence that varies with the individual, situation, and time.

[Chrono-ecological analysis of population health and ways of its recreation].
Reported are results of multiyear observation of the structure of individual and population health in Vladikavkaz, and the authors' concept of health recovery and protection through application of modern high technologies of active chronoadaptation to extreme living conditions. The proposed methods of active chronoadapation, i.e. phytocorrection and phytopro-phylaxis, reflexocorrection, bioradiological correction, bioresonance chronolasercorrection can be also of interest for aerospace medicine.
Recreating nursing practice for a new century. Recommendations and implications of the Pew Health Professions Commission's final report.
The erratic path of evolution of health care in the United States creates daunting threats as well as new opportunities for institutions, professionals, and the public. Perhaps no stakeholder has more to risk or gain than professional nursing. As the largest of all the health professions, nursing serves as the backbone for much of the care delivery system. Historically, nurses have been employed primarily in hospital settings. Toward the latter part of the 20th century, however, nurses assumed such expanded roles as independent practitioners, managers of care in large health plans, and providers of alternative and complementary health care services. These new roles point to how nursing may rapidly evolve as the health care system addresses continuing issues of cost, performance, access, and consumer satisfaction. While today's opportunities are great, threats remain to the traditional role of the nurse in the hospital setting, through regulatory constraints on nursing practice and the lack of clear purpose and direction within the broad professional nursing community. Following a decade of leadership and advocacy for health professions education, the Pew Health Professions Commission issued its fourth and final report in December 1998. In this report, the Commission assessed the challenges facing professionals in the 21st century and made general and profession-specific recommendations for action.
