A questionnaire concerning respiratory symptoms was completed for 101 workers on a maize farm; 73 railway workers were used as a control group. Symptoms suggestive of allergy were found in 90% of the farm workers compared with only 4% of the control group. However, total IgE levels of the farm workers were not significantly raised and only 40% had positive radio-allergosorbent tests against specific allergens. Smoking seemed neither to reduce nor enhance symptoms. Fungal spores and bacteria in the vicinity were sampled and identified; no evidence of an allergic response to these agents was found. Mechanisms other than allergy must be considered responsible for the farm workers' symptoms.
The influence on color vision of 4 kinds of sun-glasses with various characteristics of transparency and absorption of 25, 50, 75 p.c. was evaluated. Sixty persons with normal color discrimination took part in investigation. The selection of filters for professional drivers and railway engine-drivers was performed on the basis of Nagel's anomaloscope and Farnworth-Munsell's 100--Hue tests.
The authors point out the tests which enable the evaluation of the binocular vision in examinations qualifying for an employment in the railway service. The employees with an open angle glaucoma may continue their work under condition of controlling their visual functions in 3-months intervals. In cases of a macular degeneration examination of mesopic vision is necessary.
One hundred and eighty four engine-drivers aged 21-60 years were examined; 91 from them provoked an accident not stopping the train in front of the "Stop" signal; 93 constituted a control group. Compared was the status of the visual system and the efficiency of the visual functions such as: binocular vision, color vision and asthenopia, mesopic vision and the sensitivity to glare. In engine-drivers of the "accident-prone" group one observed an increased sensitivity for glare. The authors suggest it would be necessary to introduce to the qualification examinations for engine-drivers the evaluation of the sensitivity to glare and of the visual ability in mesopic conditions.

Current sanitary surveillance at the Moscow Metro was analyzed under the conditions of scientific and technical revolution. A new form of current sanitary surveillance based on the data derived from medical certificates processed at the Moscow Metro Computer Centre was proposed. Excess coefficient of disease rates was calculated. If it exceeded 2, working conditions at the bay were considered unfavourable. A special impetus was given to the analysis of catarrhal diseases. Highlighted was the importance of economic interest in disease control, involving both individual members of work collectives and sanitary workers.
Subject of the study are the two up-to-date professions with well expressed neuropsychic stress and hypodynamia: 19 managers from industry and 41 controllers from the railway transport. Both professional groups were subject to a definite dose of physical loading and estimation of the ECG changes by the aid of Minnesota's code (WHO 1968) and its modification by the Swedish Cardiological Association. Relatively high percents of positive working samples for healthy middle-aged men were found, which could be related with considerable occupational risk in both professions.

Skin lesions in Kaimai Rail Tunnel workers were noted to respond poorly to treatment and investigations revealed that this was because the lesions were either gram-negative infections or Trichophyton rubrum infections.
Development of the devices for the improvement of air chemical content of cabs, disposal of noxious aerosols and light aeroionic separation is one of the most urgent problems of optimization and sanitation of working conditions of locomotive engine-drivers. Sectoral laboratory of atmospheric air protection of the Ministry for Ways of Communication of the USSR developed a highly effective system of air purification and conditioning in locomotive's cabs. The system involved a draught agitator, devices of air electric heating, electrostatic air treatment, humidification and neutralization. The system ensured cabin's air recirculation 6 times per hour. Besides necessary air heating and humidification, air dustiness and microbic contamination decreased to 0.2 mg/m3 and about 100 colonies per m3, respectively. The level of air saturation by light aeroions increased from 500 to 1200 per cm3. At the system outlet there were no nitrogen and ozone oxides. The design of the system was covered by patent.

Asbestos has been used on rolling stock of the Italian Railways since the 1940's. From the 1950's to the 1970's it was used on a massive scale for the insulation of passenger carriages (up to more than 800 kg per carriage). About 10 years ago, a programme was began to remove asbestos from rolling stock and replace it with glass fibre. We must consider as exposed to the carcinogenic effects of asbestos all mechanics who, during the past years, worked at the Major Repair Workshops (MRW), at the Locomotive Depots (LD) of the State Railways, or in other state or private factories where railway rolling stock insulated with asbestos was built, checked, repaired or demolished, or where asbestos removal operations took place. It has been estimated that the total number of mechanics potentially exposed to asbestos since 1950 in the MRWs alone amounts to more than 25,000. There are about 750 workers presently employed at the Bologna MRW and it has been estimated that the entire cohort of this MRW from the beginning of the 1950's includes about 3,000 people (in excess). In 1986 the Bologna Institute of Oncology reported 6 cases of pleural mesothelioma at the Bologna MRW and 1 at the Rimini MRW. This was the first report of pleural mesotheliomas among railway mechanics in Italy. From 1986 up to the present, other cases of pleural mesothelioma have been recorded among mechanics working on railway rolling stock in the MRW's and in the LD's of the State Railways and in other factories.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
