It is well recognized that controlled medical terminologies play a critical role in Health Information Systems and Clinical Patient Record systems, but the creation and management of customized lists of terms ("picklists") remains a potential obstacle. We have been developing a sophisticated authoring tool that is fully integrated with our terminology server and that will be made available to our system analysts and clinicians.

Natural human languages have proven to be sub-optimal in artificial intelligence applications because of their tendency to inexact representation of meaning. The author has devised a technique for converting human language to and from a compact byte-coded intermediate representation, which is processed more easily by computer systems. A specialized lexical engine based on IEEE Standard 1275-1994 was created to embed redundant information invisibly within the byte-coded text stream, to enable use of a variety of alphabets, grammars, and pronunciation rules (including slang and regional dialects). Very large vocabularies in a variety of human languages are supported. These lexical tools are designed to facilitate speech recognition and speech synthesis subsystems, universal translators and machine intelligence systems.

Physicians obtain information by verbally communicating with patients. But communication is frequently impaired for varied reasons. Often, physicians and patients speak different languages, even when both use English as their vernacular. Intravenous drug users have their own way of referring to their lifestyle and habits. Without understanding the terms they use, the physician will have difficulty appreciating the course of events leading up to a disease. Terms unique to the drug culture, or terms that have a different meaning to drug users than they do to the general public are defined herein. This special lexicon is the culmination of the author's 5-year file-card collection of terms.
OBJECTIVES: With the collection of articles presented in this special issue, we aim at educating interested statisticians and biometricians on the one hand as well as biologists and medical researchers on the other with respect to basic necessities in planning, conducting and analyzing microarray gene expression experiments. The reader should get comprehensive directions to understand both the overall structure of this approach as well as the decisive details, which enable--or thwart--a meaningful data analysis. METHODS: For a one-day workshop with tutorial character we brought together experts in design, conduct and analysis of microarray gene expression experiments who prepared a series of comprehensive lessons. These contributions were then reworked into a series of introductory articles and bundled in form and content as a Special Topic. RESULTS: It was possible to present a tutorial overview of the field. The interested reader was able to learn the basic necessities and was referred to further references for details on the possible alternatives. A recipe style all-embracing plan, covering all eventualities and possibilities was not only beyond the scope of an introductory tutorial-like presentation, but was also not yet agreed upon by the scientific society. CONCLUSIONS: It proved feasible to find a framework for integrating the interdisciplinary approaches to the challenging field of gene expression analysis with microarrays, hopefully contributing to a rapid and comprehensive introduction for novices.
Spanish is the second most common language spoken in the United States. Physicians can expect a growing population of patients who speak Spanish as their primary language. The purpose of this study was to develop a glossary of Spanish dermatological vocabulary commonly used by Mexican workers. Dermatologic terms were gathered from transcripts of in-depth interviews with 31 Latino farmworkers in North Carolina. Participants were asked to name and define words related to skin irritations. Farmworkers provided several definitions of some terms, and several Spanish equivalents exist for specific English words. This glossary is a supplement to other resources for learning medical Spanish and expands health care professionals' knowledge of dermatology-related Spanish vocabulary.
An understanding of the anatomy of the eye is the sine qua non for an appreciation of the pathophysiology of ocular disease. This introductory article is a brief review and elucidation of the pertinent aspects of ocular anatomy. Also included is a glossary of opthalmologic terms that may help clarify some of the more esoteric terminology as the reader peruses the various articles in this issue.
