Preliminary assessment of selected methacrylic acid--acrylic acid copolymers as factors buffering triethanolamine interacting with artificial skin sebum.

To allow cleaning of sebum ducts for acne prophylaxis the authors suggest use of triethanolamine buffered with anionic polymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid. In these preliminary researches addition of Eudragit L-100, Eudragit L-100-55 or Eudragit S-100 implicates decrease of pH of 1.49% triethahnolamine solution from 10.06 even to 7.20. Triethanolamine penetrates into the artificial skin sebum, gains hydrophylic properties, and reacted sebum increase in volume allowing mechanical remove of lipid bed. The highest triethanolamine penetration and the highest volume increase were observed after application of Eudragit S-100 complexes. Eudragit L-100 and L-100-55 proved milder action. These complexes may be applied for further examinations on acne prevention.

Use of acrylic of low polymerization after heminandibulectomy.

Two cases of mandibular reconstruction are presented in which a premolded prosthesis of acrylic of low polymerization covered by silicone rubber was used. We believe that the good results obtained were not only due to the material used, but also because the periosteum and meniscus were preserved in the joint space.

Application of acrylic emulsion Liquitex R (Binney and Smith) for the preparation of injection specimens and immunohistochemical studies--an observation.

Application of acrylic emulsion Liquitex R for injection studies of the vascular system of human myomatous uteri was analysed. It was found that this injection mass does not penetrate the capillary bed of human organs, but it is useful in studies carried out on the blood supply of the human organs removed from cadavers. The results were compared with the studies performed with the help of immunohistochemical tests for von Willebrandt's factor.

Forceps-induced cracking of a single-piece acrylic foldable intraocular lens.

A case of cracking of the intraocular lens during insertion is described, a complication not previously reported with single-piece acrylic intraocular lenses. A single large crack was noticed in the center of the intraocular lens optic after the insertion of the lens with a cross-action forceps. The crack developed due to a faulty locking mechanism in the cross-action forceps, which failed to open and release the intraocular lens inside the capsular bag. However, the crack did not cause a decrease in the best-corrected visual acuity of the affected eye.

Identification and comparison of the urinary metabolites of [1,2,3-13C3]acrylic acid and [1,2,3-13C3]propionic acid in the rat by homonuclear 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Acrylic acid (AA) and its esters are used extensively for the production of a variety of polymers. Despite their ubiquitous nature, little has been reported on the metabolism of the parent acid. The metabolites of AA may be volatile, unstable, polar, and thus difficult to isolate. Therefore, 13C NMR was used to help identify and compare directly the urinary metabolites of both 99% 13C-enriched AA and propionic acid (PA). Male Sprague-Dawley rats received [1,2,3-13C]AA (400 mg/kg in water p.o.) or an equimolar dose of [1,2,3-13C]propionate together with a radioactive tracer, [2,3-14C]AA, or [1-14C]propionate, respectively, and excreta were collected for 72 hr. For both acids, expiration of 14CO2 was the major route of elimination of radiolabel (approximately 80%). Approximately 6% of the dose was excreted in the urine. Urine was analyzed directly using proton-decoupled 13C and two-dimensional 13C homonuclear correlated NMR spectroscopy. The urine from AA-treated rats revealed major signals, the intensity of which was time-dependent, from at least five 13C-enriched metabolites of AA. Signals have been assigned to 3-hydroxypropionic acid, N-acetyl-S-(2-carboxyethyl)cysteine, and N-acetyl-S-(2-carboxyethyl)cysteine-S-oxide by comparison with spectra of authentic standards. No unchanged AA was detected. In contrast, the spectra of urine from a propionate-treated rat revealed only a few minor 13C-enriched signals that were assigned to methylmalonic acid. No unchanged PA was detected.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[DNA damage test in forestomach squamous epithelium of F344 rat following oral administration of ethyl acrylate].

The alkaline elution assay were applied for testing DNA damage of forestomach squamous epithelium in male F344 rat after oral administration of ethyl acrylate (EA), a forestomach carcinogen. The animals were starved for 18 hr and then given a single oral dose of EA. No DNA damage were observed by EA at the concentration of 0.1-4.0%. The weights of the forestomach increased with EA dose, reflecting edema and inflammation, but that of glandular stomach did not change with its dose.

[Cutaneous manifestations due to acrylic resins used in printing].

In the plant of a large newspaper, the manufacture of printing plates using photopolymer acrylic resins, in the place of lead, resulted in a series of orthoergic and allergic manifestations in the workers. Chemical analysis resulted in the isolation of a tetraethylene glycol diacrylate, the harmful nature of which was proven by allergological studies. Its replacement by tetrathylene glycol dimethacrylate eliminated the problems seen (study based upon 300 allergological tests).

Evaluation of surface finish and polish of eight provisional restorative materials using acrylic bur and abrasive disk with and without pumice.

This study evaluated the effects of two finishing techniques and pumice polishing on the surface roughness of eight different provisional materials. Provisional materials included polymethylmethacrylate-based Alike, Snap, Trim and Jetand composite-based provisional materials Temphase, Protemp 3 Garant, Luxatemp and Integrity. Baseline surface roughness was measured by a profilometer, then the provisional materials were finished using extra fine acrylic burs or medium abrasive disks. The surface roughness of each sample was measured following finishing using a profilometer as previously stated. Each surface was then polished with pumice and the surface roughness was measured again. The data were analyzed using repeated measures of ANOVA and Bonferroni pairwise comparisons (alpha = 0.05). The results indicated that with composite provisional materials, the unfinished surfaces are smoother than with bur or abrasive-disk finished surfaces. Pumice application did not smooth the surface finish for all materials. The different types of provisional materials required different finishing techniques to produce the smoothest finishes.

[Histamine-releasing activity of acrylic plastic materials].

The histamine-releasing activity of acrylic plastics (ftorax, stomacryl, ethacryl) used for denture making and maxillofacial prostheses was studied by automated and computer-aided fiber glass method for evaluating histamine release from whole blood basophils. The results indicate that some plastics made by the thermo-polymerization method (for example, ethacryl) are characterized by higher histamine-releasing activity than the plastics made by polymerization using superhigh frequency electromagnetic energy. The method is recommended for preliminary screening of new polymers intended for dentistry and for individual selection of materials with consideration for their safety and strength characteristics.

Biodegradation kinetic of organic compounds of acrylic fiber wastewater in biofilm.

A group function relation curve between flux (J) and bulk phase concentration of substrate (S) was set up. The biodegradation kinetic of organic compounds of acrylic fiber wastewater in biofilm is studied (the treatment technology is coagulation/sedimentation-anoxic/aerobic biofilm process), and the results showed that the concentration of non-degradation pollutants in effluent is 77 mg/L. In aerobic zone, the half-rate constant is 72.84 mg/L, the maximum removal rate of organic compounds at unit area filler is very low, 0.089 g/(m2 x d), which corresponds to the fact that there are some biorefractory compounds in the wastewater.

Fabrication of a fixed provisional restoration utilizing a light-curing acrylic resin.

The properly fabricated provisional restoration must take into account the following interrelated factors: pulpal protection, periodontal health, occlusion, esthetics, and phonetics. The techniques advocated for construction of a provisional restoration include direct, indirect, and a combination of direct and indirect techniques. Two simple techniques that use light-curing acrylic resin for the fabrication of fixed provisional restorations are presented, and advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are discussed.

Design of novel biointerfaces (I). Blood compatibility of poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate).

We have reported that poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA) shows excellent blood compatibility with respect to the coagulation, complement, leukocyte and platelet systems in vitro and ex vivo when compared with other polymer surfaces. In this study, to clarify the reasons for this good compatibility, the structure of water in the hydrated PMEA were investigated and compared to water structure of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and polyacrylate analogs as references. The hydrated water in PMEA could be classified into three types; free water, freezing-bound water, and non-freezing water. Cold crystallization of water in the heating process was clearly observed at -42 degrees C. This cold crystallization is interpreted as the phase transition from the amorphous ice to the crystal ice that belongs to the freezing-bound water in PMEA. On the other hand, the cold crystallization peak (freezing bound water; which prevents the biocomponents from contacting the polymer surface or non-freezing water on the polymer surface) was not observed for hydrated PHEMA and PMEA analogous polymers. We hypothesized that the freezing-bound water layer between free water and non-freezing water was an important factor for the excellent blood compatibility of PMEA.

Embolic effects of superabsorbent polymer microspheres in rabbit renal model: comparison with tris-acryl gelatin microspheres and polyvinyl alcohol.

PURPOSE: We have developed a spherical embolic agent, superabsorbent polymer microspheres (SAP-MS). The aim of this study was to examine the embolic effects of SAP-MS in comparison with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles and tris-acryl gelatin microsphere (Embosphere Microsphere; EM) in a rabbit renal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The right kidneys of nine rabbits were embolized with the given agents: PVA (180-300 microm) (n=3), EM (100-300 microm) (n=3), and SAP-MS (106-150 microm) (n=3). The embolized kidneys were evaluated by angiography and histology after one week. RESULTS: Renal artery occlusion and prominent coagulative necrosis were confirmed regardless of agent. PVA aggregated in the proximal vessels with tiny fragments migrating into glomeruli. Both EM and SAP-MS traveled distally up to the interlobular artery level, and a single particle achieved cross-sectional vessel occlusion. SAP-MS was markedly swollen, deformed, and conformed to the vessel lumen compared with the constantly spherical EM. Mild perivascular reaction was seen with both microspheres. CONCLUSION: SAP-MS resulted in targeted end-organ infarction in the rabbit renal model and showed different mechanical properties from other agents.
