OBJECTIVE: To compare and analyze IgG antibodies against chlamydial heat shock protein (cHSP60) in the blood serum of women with or without periadnexal adhesions in small pelvis. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Masaryk University, Brno, Veterinary Research Institute, Brno, Department of Clinical Microbiology, Faculty Hospital Brno. METHODS: IgG antibodies against cHSP60 in the blood serum were detected by means of recombinant enzyme immunoanalysis ("cHSP60 - IgG - rELISA medac"). The presence of antibodies was expressed as +, ++ or +++ pozitive. Laparoscopy according to a standard procedure was performed in 76 women (age 28 +/- 43 years) from couples with fertility disorders treated in the Centre of Reproductive Medicine, Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Chí-square test (programme Statcalc - EpiInfo 6) and calculation of OR value were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-four women (31.6%) had normal finding in small pelvis. Periadnexal adhesions were detected in 43 (56.6%) patients, hydrosalpinx in 13 cases (17.1%), endometriosis in 27 (35.5%) patients and uterine myomas in 11 (145%) women. In the group of 33 women without periadnexal adhesions cHSP-60 antibodies were pozitive in 3 women (9.1%), in 43 women with periadnexal adhesions were pozitive in 17 cases (39.5%). In 13 patients with hydrosalpinx cHSP-60 antibodies were pozitive in 61.5%. In patients with periadnexal adhesions semiquantitative pozitivity +++ was detected in 8 cases (18.6%), 4 of them with hydrosalpinx (30.8%). Statistical analysis found significantly higher presence of cHSP-60 antibodies in women with periadnexal adhesions (OR = 654, CI interval = 1.59 - 37.81, chi-square: p = 0.0028) CONCLUSION: Women with periadnexal adhesions have more frequent and stronger pozitivity of IgG antibodies against chlamydial heat shock protein cHSP60.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is considered to be the main reason of hyperandrogenism in reproductive women. There are often metabolic disorders connected with carbohydrate and adipose metabolism in the patients with PCOS. However, presence of metabolic disorders does not influence the diagnosis of the syndrome. The investigations demonstrated that the changes in lifestyle and use of proper medications could normalize endocrine system and metabolism through insulin-sensitivity increase and in the result it could restore the menses and ovulations. This paper introduces present knowledge concerning metabolic disorders associated with PCOS.
Our primary social response to substance abuse during pregnancy has been legal, punitive, and coercive. Rooted in the belief that the maternal-fetal relationship is primarily adversarial in nature, this response is unlikely to deter women from abusing drugs during pregnancy. An alternative perspective in which the maternal-fetal relationship is viewed as an interactive unit where the needs of one define the needs of both would be more appropriate. Only by assisting rather than punishing women are we likely to help them, their fetuses, and their children.
Turner syndrome occurs in 1 of every 2000 to 5000 live female births and is now recognized to encompass a broad range of chromosomal karyotypes and clinical phenotypes. Many of these individuals appear completely normal save for their short stature. This article reviews the major clinical and physiologic abnormalities that can occur and places special emphasis on the problems of short stature and gonadal failure. Evidence is reviewed that indicates that there is a potential for increased height with growth hormone treatment. Also discussed is the spectrum of gonadal function, ranging from the onset of spontaneous puberty and the potential for fertility to complete gonadal failure.

Isotretinoin (Accutane Capsules) is a synthetic vitamin A compound used for treatment of recalcitrant cystic acne. It has numerous ocular toxic side effects which include anterior segment inflammation, dry eye syndrome, contact lens intolerance, altered refraction, photosensitivity, and reduced night vision. Eye care practitioners should be aware of these potential side effects and be prepared to communicate with the prescribing physician if side effects present.
