An adaptive medical e-learning environment: the MEDIDACTE project.

Most e-learning systems offer the same tools and resource materials to students who are different in terms of motivations, training backgrounds, technical skills and learning objectives. Adaptive systems development is a challenge intended to improve the efficiency of these systems. This communication presents the design and implementation of an adaptive medical e-learning environment. The authors describe the MEDIDACTE architecture developed in three levels namely, the educational resource, educational project and user level. Current MEDIDACTE implementation and integration in Marseille Medical University curriculum are presented.

The ABS population projections: overview and evaluation.

"This paper provides a brief history of the ABS [Australian Bureau of Statistics] projection [service] in the context of its role as the central statistical agency in Australia. It also presents an overview of the methodology used for generating the projections and details the procedures used for compiling the various components of change incorporated in the projections. The accuracy of the ABS past projections is assessed by comparing their results, both at the national and state/territory levels, with corresponding estimated resident population figures. The paper also describes the range of projection services currently provided by the ABS, lists present unmet needs and indicates some of the developments likely to occur in the future in satisfying unmet demand, consolidation of existing services and dissemination of output." The evaluation concerns the period from 1978 to the present.

[Forecast of international migration, 1994-2010].

"The estimated number of immigrants [in the Netherlands] for 1994 is 104 thousand, implying a decrease of some 15 thousand compared to the preceding year.... There were approximately 79 thousand emigrants, a slight increase (4 thousand) compared to 1993. The resulting net migration decreased from 44 thousand persons in 1993 to 25 thousand persons in 1994. In 1995 a temporary increase of (net) immigration is expected, due to the increase of the number of asylum seekers in 1994.... After 1995 projected net migration rapidly declines to 35 thousand." DNA barcoding in diverse educational settings: five case studies.

Despite 250 years of modern taxonomy, there remains a large biodiversity knowledge gap. Most species remain unknown to science. DNA barcoding can help address this gap and has been used in a variety of educational contexts to incorporate original research into school curricula and informal education programmes. A growing body of evidence suggests that actively conducting research increases student engagement and retention in science. We describe case studies in five different educational settings in Canada and the USA: a programme for primary and secondary school students (ages 5-18), a year-long professional development programme for secondary school teachers, projects embedding this research into courses in a post-secondary 2-year institution and a degree-granting university, and a citizen science project. We argue that these projects are successful because the scientific content is authentic and compelling, DNA barcoding is conceptually and technically straightforward, the workflow is adaptable to a variety of situations, and online tools exist that allow participants to contribute high-quality data to the international research effort. Evidence of success includes the broad adoption of these programmes and assessment results demonstrating that participants are gaining both knowledge and confidence. There are exciting opportunities for coordination among educational projects in the future. This article is part of the themed issue 'From DNA barcodes to biomes'.

A stereotactic guide for microsurgery. Technical note.

A stereotactic guide for microsurgery is presented. The guide consists of a weak helium neon laser projecting a red beam towards the target when the arc carrying the beam has been set on the Leksell frame according to the stereotactic co-ordinates of the target calculated on the pre-operative imaging studies. The device allows free manoeuverability of the operating microscope.

Scaled clips for aneurysm surgery: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: The tips of clip blades are often invisible during operations on large, deep, or posteriorly projecting aneurysms. To overcome this problem, we sought to develop a series of scaled clips. METHODS: We made scaled clips modified from Yaşargil titanium clips. The blades of the new clips are scaled every 5 mm from the tips with alternating colors. We have added six new types of straight scaled clips. RESULTS: To date, we have performed approximately 40 aneurysm clippings using the new scaled clips and have confirmed their usefulness. CONCLUSION: Scaling on the blades helps confirm accurate placement of a clip, even during operations for large, deep, or posteriorly projecting aneurysms, in which blade tips are often invisible.

[Technical evolution of the stent].

Percutaneous coronary intervention has been hampered by restenosis since its inception. Many research projects including the use of various devices and systemic drug administration have shown disappointing results. Recently, the advent of drug-eluting stents has reduced incidence of restenosis compared with bare metal stents. This article provides an overview of the developments of drug-eluting stents, their clinical impact on the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, and their future perspectives.

Community hospitals and the Internet: lessons from pilot connections.

Community hospitals in rural and isolated areas have had little access to the Internet. In 1992, the National Library of Medicine funded a pilot project to be conducted by the University of Washington and seven community hospitals in the northwestern United States. The goals of the project were to connect the hospitals to the Internet and study the uses made of this resource. A number of administrative, technical, financial, and organizational problems were dealt with in the attempt to establish the Internet connections and introduce this resource to these health care settings. This paper examines these issues and presents conclusions drawn from the experiences of the project team.

Reuse of heat energy in wastewater: implementation examples in Japan.

Sewage and treated water can be a heat source in urban area due to large heat capacity, thus recovery and reuse of its energy is one of the most desirable plans for the sewerage system. In this paper, characteristics of heat energy in wastewater, reuse plans, and some experiences in Japan are presented. Full-scale reuse projects for heating and cooling in the Tokyo Metropolitan Districts and project for melting snow in Sapporo City are discussed. The key factors found in experience of Tokyo were setting the heat pumps near the demand points and the technical developments of equipment to prevent system from clogging, corrosion, and decrease in the heat transfer efficiency. It was also found through the project for melting snow in Sapporo that the key factor in public acceptance was the multi-purpose use of the sewerage system both for melting snow in winter and retaining rain water in summer.

The urban density function and its application: cross-sectional approach.

Using population census data for the years 1947-1971, the author analyzes the relationship between changes in urban density and population growth in three major coastal urban centers in Queensland, Australia. "Changes in density patterns over time are examined in terms of the empirical exponential density gradient models which emphasise the significance of the distance from the CBD (Central Business District), and a projection of residential population in the centres is made for the year 1990."

National population forecasts in industrialized countries: main findings of an international workshop.

The main findings are presented from a workshop on national population projections in developed countries, held in Voorburg, Netherlands, October 25-28, 1988. "The programme concentrated on four themes: general aspects of national population projections, fertility, mortality and international migration. Under the first theme, an international comparison of the forecasting process was presented, and items like accuracy, variants and monitoring were discussed. The other sessions contained cross-country overviews of actual trends, most recent assumptions and currently applied extrapolation methods. Furthermore, special attention was given to the use of time series methods and explanatory models for the extrapolation of fertility."

Moving from technical to critical reflection in journalling: an investigation of students' ability to incorporate three levels of reflective writing.

This paper outlines a research project aimed at changing the levels of reflection of preregistration nursing students in a tertiary institution. Whilst reflection is widely espoused now in nursing, few studies have been found that identify whether the level of reflective writing can be identified or developed by students. Anecdotal and research evidence (Powell 1989; van Manen 1977) however indicates that most student reflective writing occurs at the technical level. A descriptive exploratory study using both qualitative and quantitative techniques was undertaken to apply van Manen's (1977) levels in a structured way in an attempt to facilitate the student's understanding and use of the levels in their reflective writing. The findings of the study indicate that student self evaluation and identification of the levels in their own writing can lead to change in the levels of critical reflective writing achieved by undergraduate students.

Analysis and projection of national and regional mortality for countries of the European Economic Area.

"Three scenarios of future mortality trends are presented for all countries of the European Economic Area. The high scenario assumes a considerable decline in mortality rates. Consequently life expectancy at birth will continue to increase at about the same rate as during the last decades.... In the low scenario only a small decline in death rates is assumed. This scenario assumes that there will be no convergence between countries. Moreover the current differences between male and female mortality are assumed to persist."
