[Nuclear proteins and nucleic acids during differentiation of neurons in the spinal cord ganglia, spinal cord and tectum opticum in chickens. Cytophotometric study with computation programs].

By means of doublewave cytophotometry of the histological sections and smears performed with the device mtsfv-1 (lomo) it has been demonstrated that differentiation of some neurons of the spinal ganglia and the spinal cord is accompanied with hyperreplication of DNA amount exceeding the diploid contents, while the large neurons in layer III of the tectum opticum remain diploid. In the process of differentiation an increased amount of RNA and histones, and decreasing portion of histones sented for the microcalculator b3-21.

[Computer programs SAN and EPID: family analysis and epidemiology of multifactorial diseases].

SAN software, a database management system, is elaborated. It is subject-oriented to family analysis in the genetics of multifactorial traits (diseases). The software allows creating and maintaining a family-oriented database and using the inputted information to calculate relative risk of disease, heritability, and correlations between several diseases or forms, with both actual frequency of the trait (prevalence) and probability of new cases (incidence). If appropriate data on sibships or nuclear families are available, one can calculate an empirical estimation of the risk of repeated cases of the disease in a family in relation to family anamnesis in different methods of sampling, sex-related morbidity, and varying age of onset. The database may also be used independently as a card index. The software allows one to represent pedigrees graphically, highlighting the desired set of traits. As application program, EPID, was developed, aimed at calculation and graphical presentation of age-related estimations of prevalence and incidence, as well as of the population risk of an individual to develop a disease within a time interval from birth to a certain age (accumulated morbidity).

GENOLYTE: a PC-based computer program for visualisation of genomic DNA sequences.

This paper describes the program "GENOLYTE" which has been developed for the visualisation and identification of the global and local patterns of long genomic DNA sequences quickly in a few minutes, with the aid of a microcomputer. Apart from global and local identification, GENOLYTE comparatively depicts the similarity of two or more than two genomic DNA sequences. The utility of the program has been demonstrated by analysing the complete mitochondrial DNA sequences (taken from EMBL databank) as an example and the results are discussed from therein. The program written in TURBO C++ has the following minimum requirements: (i) PC 386 AT, (ii) SVGA colour monitor, (iii) the [BGI] directory of TURBO C++ version 3.0.

Issues to consider when choosing a computer program to assist Native American collection of accurate cancer data.

BACKGROUND: Cancer registries are the primary source of cancer surveillance data and are an important component of a successful cancer control program. Some Native American tribes are currently served by cancer registries, but many are not. Native Americans will increasingly be involved in the development of new cancer registries and in improving the quality of data in existing registries. METHODS: The search for an appropriate software package should begin with a comprehensive review of the registry's goals and objectives. Other considerations include the availability of funding and human resources. RESULTS: A good software package should be easy to use, able to provide readable documentation, flexible enough to accommodate change, and have a proven record of success. Software vendors should offer training and should be readily available to respond to questions and problems that may arise. CONCLUSIONS: Numerous software programs are available to assist Native Americans with the collection and maintenance of cancer data, and most will meet the basic needs of a cancer registry. However, a successful cancer registration system depends on much more than software. Collaboration with an existing cancer registry may provide a reasonable alternative to developing and supporting a new registry. Professional organizations and other resources are available to provide guidance in this area.

[Service (computer) program for selecting magnifying means].

A service program for selecting magnifying means has been developed and tried in 59 patients (110 eyes) with senile maculodystrophy and cataracts. Attempts at choosing traditional magnifiers (magnifying glasses, hyperoculars, telescopic eyeglasses, and contact lens-eyeglasses system) were made with due consideration for the focus of lesions and the anatomooptic parameters of the eye (corneal refraction, size of the anteroposterior axis, and clinical refraction). The results indicate that the proposed program helped effectively choose traditional magnifiers for the majority (81.35%) of the above patient population.
