OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to examine the level of airborne fungi and environmental factors in Seoul metropolitan subway stations and to provide fundamental data to protect the health of subway workers and passengers. METHODS: The field survey was performed from November in 2004 to February in 2005. A total 22 subway stations located at Seoul subway lines 1-4 were randomly selected. The measurement points were subway workers' activity areas (station office, bedroom, ticket office and driver's seat) and the passengers' activity areas (station precincts, inside train and platform). Air sampling for collecting airborne fungi was carried out using a one-stage cascade impactor. The PM and CO2 were measured using an electronic direct recorder and detecting tube, respectively. RESULTS: In the activity areas of the subway workers and passengers, the mean concentrations of airborne fungi were relatively higher in the workers' bedroom and station precinct whereas the concentration of particulate matter, PM10 and PM2.5, were relatively higher in the platform, inside the train and driver's seat than in the other activity areas. There was no significant difference in the concentration of airborne fungi between the underground and ground activity areas of the subway. The mean PM10 and PM2.5 concentration in the platform located at underground was significantly higher than that of the ground (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The levels of airborne fungi in the Seoul subway line 1-4 were not serious enough to cause respiratory disease in subway workers and passengers. This indicates that there is little correlation between airborne fungi and particulate matter.
In this work, which follows a quali-quantitative methodology, we explored train conductors' sources of restlessness and the relationship between work environment stressors and health of those conductors from urban zones. Firstly, observations and interviews to key informants and conductors were done. Secondly, a group of conductors were asked to complete the following instruments: Occupational Stress Inventory (OSI, Osipow and Spokane, 1987; adaptation: Schmidt, Leibovich, Schufer, Gonzalez and Marcomi, 2003), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ, Goldberg and Williams, 1996; Spanish version: Lobo and Muñoz, 1996) and a Socio-demographic and a Work Questionnaire (elaborated by researcher group). Data were analyzed with quali-quantitative methodology. Main sources of restlessness from this population were identified as well as the possible impact these sources have on workers health.
Epidemiological and medical-social aspects of diseases of locomotor system and conjunctive tissue in railway personnel (1993-2004) are analyzed. The established negative trends in propagation of diseases locomotor system predetermine priority of preventive measures in organization of medical care for the patients of this category. Establishment of medical rooms for preventing diseases of locomotor system is recommended.
338 members of engine crews were observed. 159 were found to have neurotic and anxious-phobic reactions before any clinical nosology. It was established that misunderstanding between engine driver and his helpmate, autonomic dysfunction, individual features of character and family conflicts play the main part in the development of neurotic reactions.

The investigation reported here was conducted to describe the pattern of calls received by the Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN) in relation to a chlorine gas release that resulted from a train collision in Bexar County, Texas, on June 28, 2004, and to test various methods for conducting toxicosurveillance. TPCN received a total of 42 calls; the first call was received approximately 35 minutes after the collision. Calls continued for 10 days after the collision. Comparison of the number of calls received from Bexar County on the collision date with the number of similar calls received in the past revealed that numbers for this collision date were elevated for total calls, total information calls, total human exposure calls, chlorine gas calls, and calls involving coughing or choking, headache, throat irritation, or bronchospasm. When a similar analysis was performed for the entire state, call numbers were elevated only for chlorine gas calls and calls involving bronchospasm.
Antihypertensive drug eprosartan from the group of angiotensin II receptor blockers was studied from the position of its effect on professionally significant psychophysiological qualities of train drivers, which were assessed with the help of psychophysiological tests. One hundred drivers with arterial hypertension were included into the study and 2 adequate groups were distinguished: 1st which consisted of 50 persons receiving eprosartan (600 mg/day), and 2nd which comprised 50 persons receiving placebo. Results of the study have showed that eprosartan did not lower professionally significant psychophysiological qualities of drivers.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a 2-D virtual reality (2DVR) programme in the training of people with stroke on how to access and use the station facilities of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). METHOD: A flat-screen 2DVR based training programme and a corresponding, typical psycho-educational programme with video modelling were developed for comparison through a research design that involved a randomised control group pre-test and post-test. RESULTS: Twenty and sixteen subjects respectively received 10 training sessions using the 2DVR strategy and a video-based psycho-educational programme. An additional 22 subjects formed the control group. They were assessed by using a behavioural checklist of MTR skills and a newly validated MTR self-efficacy scale. The subjects of both training groups showed a significant improvement in their knowledge, skills and self-efficacy in using the MTR (p<0.01), whereas, the MTR skills and self-efficacy of the control group remained stable over a four-week interval. CONCLUSION: Though both training programmes were effective in training the patients with stroke, they demonstrated differential improvements in MTR skills and related self-efficacy. Additional studies are recommended to identify the most effective training procedures for maintaining these skills and the best transfer ratio in the training of VR-based community living skills of people with stroke.

This article analysed human factors involving train traffic accidents by using log-linear model. The results showed that lower degree of culture (OR = 2.571) and weak nervous type (OR = 2.099) were risk factors involving train traffic accidents. Interactions were shown to exist between nervous type and degree of culture, average sleeping time everyday, and visuomotor reaction time.
Authors write up the experiences they gained at repeated train accidents on the same section of railway line. The circumstances of the two accidents are evaluated and analysed. The experiences they obtained at the first accident were put to use the second time. The authors stress that the growing number of mass accidents makes it necessary to prepare an alarm and provision plan for every institution.
The physical work capacity is studied in representatives of 3 professions with decreased motor activity and neuropsychic stress: managers in industry (20), railway controllers (41) and machine-builders (107). The dependence of the physical work capacity on the age, type of work, physical activity during free time, and other biometric and individual characteristics on the examined persons were studied. The physical working capacity was measured in standard laboratory conditions by bicycle ergometer [correction of veloergometer] Lano at submaximal rates of loading 50, 100 and 150 watt with duration 2 min each and velocity of pedalling 60 r/min. The maximal working capacity (MWC) was measured directly by continuous loading increase to refusal. The results pointed out ineffective reaction of the cardiovascular system at dosage of physical effort (increase of the "normative" values of the pulse rate for respective loading with 5 to 15 beats/min with all examined groups). The aerobic capacity level is under the average, as most unfavourable are its values in the managers from the industry, followed by the railway controllers and machine-builders. Hypodynamic during work, combined with low physical activity during free time, are basic risk factors for the maximal working capacity and the cardio-vascular system. There is a dependence of the aerobic capacity on some individual characteristics (age, body weight, pulse frequency and blood pressure at rest, etc.).

Analysis of medico-demographic indices of 3450 women--conductors of passenger long-distance trains give evidence of the presence of changes in the status of the reproductive function. Birth indices are low, in spite of favourable marriage levels. Childlessness levels in women working on trains are 5-6 times higher compared to the average values in the country. Unfavourable tendencies are observed in women of any age, however, they are more profoundly marked in older women who have been handling maximal contact with harmful occupational factors during many years of work. Significant relationships have not been observed between birth level and such parameters as nationality, place of living, educational level etc.
